The Canterbury Tales (Penguin Classics) 29 reviews Geoffrey Chaucer
Penguin Classics, 2003
The strength of Chaucer's verse shines through.... Chaucer was a master story teller. He was a master poet. He was a master writer. He was just blessed, gifted... there aren't enough words to express the depth of Chaucer's talent... his gift.
This collection reminds me why I fell in love with Chaucer's work back in college. It's one of the more complete collections and I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.
I will read it a ...

Save The Cat! The Last Book on Screenwriting You'll Ever Need 177 reviews Blake Snyder
Michael Wiese Productions, 2005
Before you type FADE IN... ...do yourself a favor and read some Blake Snyder!
As a general rule, I'm not a fan of screenwriting books. Most of them parrot the same drivel over and over and by the end you really don't feel like you've learned anything new. Blake takes a more casual, less academic approach than many so-called gurus and the result is entertaining, informative, and practical. And he's got actual produced ...

Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die 186 reviews Chip Heath, Dan Heath
Random House, 2007
Make You & Your Ideas Unforgettable "Where's the beef?" is a line from a 20-year old Wendy's commercial. Those of us watching TV back then remember 80-something Clara Peller uttering those immortal words while staring at a giant bun and a miniature burger.
"So easy even a caveman could do it," will also likely survive for another 20 years. You can't forget the sensitive Neanderthal so upset about Geico's insult that he has ...

Cinematic Storytelling: The 100 Most Powerful Film Conventions Every Filmmaker Must Know 23 reviews Jennifer Van Sijll
Michael Wiese Productions, 2005
Spectacular To call me a newbie screenwriter would be to insult newbie screenwriters. I'm a fledgling, nascent, inchoate, and very bad screenwriter. And if you would read the mere one-page script I wrote yesterday, you'd call me some choice names but I daresay 'screenwriter' will not be one of the myriad.
That said, this is such a great book, the highest quality through and through, from the binding to ...

Zen Shorts (Caldecott Honor Book) 78 reviews
Scholastic Press, 2005
Wonderful. Buy this book! Moral philosophy for kids - and their parents. My three year old likes the stories as much as I do. The messages are delivered simply so that you take from them your own meaning to your degree of understanding. We try to read Zen Shorts in the mornings to remind us of more peaceful ways to approach the day. I really can't recommend this book enough.

The Spirituality of Imperfection: Storytelling and the Search for Meaning 46 reviews Ernest Kurtz, Katherine Ketcham
Bantam, 1993
From AA to Zeitgeist This is a remarkably wise book, whatever your spiritual history. Life of Pi: Deluxe Illustrated Edition 22 reviews Yann Martel
Harcourt, 2007
A Mirror Held Up to the Reader Life of Pi was a fairly engaging story in terms of plot and character, but what made it such a memorable book, for me at least, was its thematic concerns. Basically, this is one of the most thematically interesting and thought-provoking books I've read in a while. Is it a "story that will make you believe in God," as Pi claims? I'm not sure I'd go that far, but I would say that most people who ...

Storytime Yoga: Teaching Yoga to Children Through Story (Storytime Yoga) 8 reviews Sydney Solis
The Mythic Yoga Studio, 2006
This book is wonderful! If you teach children's yoga or want to begin yoga with your children at home then this book is the one to buy. I have structured my class using the recommendations that Sydney Solis gives in the book with warmups and centerings, etc... I have also used all the stories in the book and have went on to use other stories and folk tales I personally enjoy incorporating yoga as I tell the story. ...

Max's Words 13 reviews Kate Banks
Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR), 2006
Max's Words I find this to be a delightful story of a little boy that is looking for something to 'collect' just like his older siblings. They have their coin and stamp collections which they refuse to share, so it's up to the youngster to go out and find something of his own. What better collection is there than words?! As a primary, elementary school teacher, I think Max is right on the money, and ...

The Book Thief (Readers Circle) 347 reviews Markus Zusak
Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2007
In which a beautiful small girl defies the might of Hitler! "The Book Thief" is an extraordinary book, indeed, the finest I've read in many years! Do you remember all of those aggravating literary clichés you read so often on book covers and publicity blurbs? Haunting, compelling, uplifting, powerful, deeply moving and gut-wrenching? Well, it's hardly overstating the case to suggest that "The Book Thief" has earned every last one of them. The narrator (we ...

It's like taking a writing course I really want to write a novel, but of course I am not a writer at all. Therefore, I started searching for a book that could provide me with a little orientation on how to start writing a novel, and I decided to purchase this book. It was the BEST decision I could have made. I did not get just a little orientation. This book is like actually being enrolled into a creative writing course. It ...

Grandfather Tang's Story (Dragonfly Books) 10 reviews Ann Tompert
Dragonfly Books, 1997
Grandfather Tang's Story Love this story. I use this book in my math class to teach tangrams. This is an excellent resource to use to teach children how the Chinese puzzle tangrams work. This book was in excellent condition when I received it and I know that I will use it for years to come.

Mister Pip 41 reviews Lloyd Jones
The Dial Press, 2007
Warm, poignant and inspiring - should have won last year's Booker In the civil war torn island of Bougainville in the early 1990s where rebels face off soldiers from encroaching forces, there lived a native community long deserted by whites who had fled to the safety of Australia and New Zealand except for one with a native wife who chose to remain behind as a local school teacher, like flotsam from an earlier tide. His name was Mr Watts but in the eyes of the ...

Gooney Bird Greene 21 reviews Lois Lowry
Yearling, 2004
Gooney Bird is an Original! I read this book to my fourth graders, and they loved it! Gooney Bird is an original thinker who always tells the truth! We had fun speculating exactly how her "wild" tales could be true, before we read on.
Gooney Bird also discusses the ways to make writing better, and kids can learn from that as well. The book would be good to use in writing classes. Plus, it's just plain fun!

The Leader's Guide to Storytelling: Mastering the Art and Discipline of Business Narrative 19 reviews Stephen Denning
Jossey-Bass, 2005
Don't Miss the chapter on the paradox of innovation Chapter 11, to be precise. It is the best critique of the Innovators Dillema and similar work that I have seen anywhere. It also has a good review of future vision techniques in Chapter 10. If I were teaching a graduate seminar in a business school, these would be assigned reading.

The Anatomy of Story: 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller 14 reviews John Truby
Faber & Faber, 2007
The Best Book on Writing. Period. I discovered John Truby ten years ago when a friend told me about his story structure audio-course for screenwriting. I studied Truby's principles for a year and -- using them -- I wrote the first draft of The Thieves of Ostia in two weeks. I go back to his audio teaching before each new book I write; that number is now fifteen. Each time I study Truby, I learn something new. This book contains ...
