Good stuff.......
Very well written. The book makes it very easy to understand why our towns and cities are set up like they are and why some are more livable than others. I purchased this book about five years ago and often still think about the concepts that are explained inside. I highly recommend it.

An Excellent History of the Modern Conservative Movement
Lisa McGirr's book, Suburban Warriors: The Origins of the New American Right, chronicles the birth of the modern conservative movement from its beginnings in Orange County, California in the late 1950s through the election of Ronald Reagan as President of the United States in 1980. Though conservatism grew from one issue, namely anticommunism, the movement came to encompass much more. Suburban ...

The House Next Door
I first picked up this book in 1983. Twenty-five years later, I can tell you that this book is one of my favorite horror stories. Anne Rivers Siddon lulls you into a false security, using home and hearth- a false normalcy - and then smacks you with such supreme horror it rocks you. Her secret,I have noticed, is to allow you to believe that honor, faith in love, and hope in friendships will ...

fun "Slightly" chick lit tale
No longer just SLIGHTLY MARRIED Tracey and Jack are happy together in New York City, albeit in a tiny apartment. However, Tracey feels they would have a nicer lifestyle if they left the Big Apple for a somewhat SLIGHTLY SUBURBAN locale especially since that would mean coming home to Jack and not his best buddy Mitch who seems to be more of a fixture in their lives then they are. Although Jack ...

A book written by a woman to women (and maybe guys too)
It was based on a similar concept of "Namesake", another contemporary book written by a woman, ie, that men has something terrible to hide from their spouses. :-) For guys it may be hard to relate to the characters, but even so I recommend it. Mainly because the book is fairly well written. I almost never read romantesque novels, so at least it was stimulating for me on this level. The characters ...

Unusual narrators, exaggerated concept, and intelligent storytelling make this readable & thought-provoking. Highly recommended
In American suburbia, the five Lisbon sisters, ages 12 through 17, commit suicide. The youngest goes first, and after their parents sequester the family within the house, her sisters follow a year afterward. Their story is told by a group neighborhood of boys, now men, who in their fanatic obsession with the Lisbon sister have pieced together the events leading up to--and possibly causing--the ...

America's great literary discovery
Richard Yates is a writer's writer. Every paragraph, every sentence, every punctuation mark seems relentlessly perfect. His unusual, unnerving realism, which has captivated Andres Dubus, Richard Ford, and so many others, lacks the fireworks of a DeLillo or the intricacies of a Pynchon, but offers the accessibility and the density of an American Tolstoy. Revolutionary Road is a classic ...

A classical look at the suburbs of the United States
Jackson writes one of the seminal studies in urban history relating to the suburbs. The end conclusion is that suburbs have not been beneficial to the United States. This tracks things from the start of suburbanization to the downfall of downtowns. Race relations are a big part of the book as is the heralding of the automobile. Jackson writes very well and the book is wonderfully organized. If ...

Beware of Offers You Cannot Refuse
The Firm launched John Grisham to superstar status as the world's favorite debunker of the legal profession. The Firm perfectly casts the way that high-potential law students are wined, dined, and bribed into taking sweat shop jobs that ruin their lives. But like all good novels, that's just the beginning of the story. How does a small-to-medium-sized Memphis firm outbid the Wall Street boys? ...

Good ideas on how to survive in the Big City
Where to get food, water, shelter in the city? What happens when there's a disaster? This book is a decent start. Lots of helpful chapters on how to get the essentials, as well as what common edible plants grow in the city. Another food-for-thought thing you can read is the chapter in Way of the Scout (also by Brown) on his first solo trip to New York City.

great memoir
Alan Black is a force of nature. A Scottish force of nature to be exact. This is a hysterical, thought-provoking, funny, tragic memoir about the world's biggest and most popular religion. soccer. Or football as it's known in the civilized world. But it's also a story of a man coming to grips with his past, with his present and his future. It doesn't matter if you are one of the unwashed ...

The book works...
I read the book. I saw a car accident. I can't go into further details because it is illegal to perform medical procedures without a degree in medicine. The boy didn't survive (he was brain dead immediately (happens when your head takes a cars bumper)) but his body did and was used to keep two other kids alive.

The Beast is Brilliant
This is a simply brilliant exposition of the Boulder that I grew up in. Baron examines the situation well and pays attention to the wildlife issues that were relevant at the time and are still relevant now. A few historical problems do come up, but they are merely anecdotal and hardly detract from the story. Two things really make this a great book: -if you're from Boulder or the Front ...

a really great read
I had given up on fiction long ago because it was always disappointing and boring in comparison to non fiction. Even all the top rate books that were supposed to be so good bored my to point of being unable to finish them. This book however is one that was hard even for me to put down. A great read and incredible first novel.

Will we ever see an end to Septic Tank Suburbia?
Not many Environmenal Health Specialists like myself will probably ever read this book (or even the chapter 'Septic Tank Suburbia'), but they should. Sanitarians, the old term for health inspectors, have approved a crap-load of septic systems serving sprawl development in this nation, and in reading it, the old timers would quickly recognize their place in the undoing of the American ...

Great Insight
Having had the opportunity to have learned from Lassiter at the University of Michigan, reading his book was quite a joy. Lassiter's insight and perspective on the growth of suburbia in the South and the move towards "color-blindness" as opposed to the racially conscious liberal movement offers a great theory that counters the somewhat accepted notion of individual racism as the driving force in ...

THIS BOOK IS ALL ABOUT HOW TO GET RICH
Get the message readers! Those who became wealthy from smart things they did became wealthy because THEY DID WHAT THEY DID! All you have to do is read, study, and copy what they did, and you too will become wealthy! It amazes me how people just don't get it. You just want to get your paycheck and stay in your little box.
