Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch (New Directions Paperbook, 161)13 reviews
Henry Miller

New Directions Publishing Corporation, 1957

Art is a healing process
My first glimpse into the world of Henry Miller has brought me a new highly admired author to read. Though 'Big Sur' is reputed to be one of his more 'tame works'...Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn having been banned works for years due to their highly sexual content, the mind of Miller is indeed a wonderous place to explore. I came across this title while searching online for info ...

William Morrow Cookbooks, 2009

More Than Just Recipes
This book is a window onto a lifestyle. Recipes, yes, wonderfully creative, mouth-watering recipes, but I picked up this book and didn't put it down again until I had read it right through! How often do you do that with a cook book? I love the personalities involved in this little gem of a restaurant, the book leads us through the day in a way that gives us intimate portraits of everyone ...

Great book for intermediate level
I found this book really engaging. It gives you the opportunity to learn within a particular context. The workbook provides great reinforcement. I like the idea of having the grammar section at the end of the book which makes it more inviting (it's not just about learning the grammar, it's about using it). Another great feature: this book is not as heavy as the previous ones I had!!

Jack Kerouac

Penguin (Non-Classics), 1992

Blast of Ocean
I think true Kerouac fans will not look at this book as only an account of his continuing descent into alcoholism during this time period of his life. If you have read any of Kerouac's other books prior to this, it will be easy to see that by now, Kerouac is grappling with his greatness, and questioning and realizing how he came about his fame. Many say that this was Kerouac's best book, and I ...

Profunda e Intensa

Hiking and Backpacking Big Sur5 reviews
Analise Elliot

Wilderness Press, 2005

Clear, On Track, Vital
The book was wonderful to have on our trip to the Central Coast. Objective information with enough opinion and subjective information to help us decide where, how, when for each hike. The back of the book with the top list organized by theme was very helpful. One way the book could have been better is with a cross-reference chart... so if you want both "ocean" and "redwoods" as themes you could ...

MAP Big Sur Recreation1 review
Wilderness Press

Wilderness Press, 2004

nice map, but not checked for accuracy
This is a great map that is well worth having if you plan to go hiking in the Ventana Wilderness. But it's not perfect. On the plus side, it's a topographic map with 80 feet contour intervals and shows all the trails, access roads, and backcountry camps. It spans the entire Ventana and Silver Peak Wilderness areas, which makes it a bit large but also quite useful for planning trips. It ...

Barry Parr

Falcon, 2007

Auto Tours, Trails and the Lore of Big Sur
By all accounts, California has some stunningly beautiful coastline. Probably the two most spectacular stretches are the Lost Coast, from Humbolt to Mendocino county, and the Big Sur Coastline, streching south from Carmel to Cambria. The former is accessible only by trail, and one narrow winding road from Humbolt Redwoods to the little community of Shelter Cove. The latter is closely followed ...

Claudine Coulanges, Flake Daniel

Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, 1990

A Bookshelf Keeper
I ordered this book for review to determine if we could use it in the 10 person French class that I'm in. After a quick review we decided that it would be a plus for our French reading. One of our group had two copies; I ordered three which I just received. Now I want to order five (5) more.It will serve as a valuable asset to our reading and understanding of French in general.

Baja California Sur State Map by Guia Roji2 reviews
Guia Roji

Guia Roji, 2004

Good map
We lived in Baja for 6 years and this was the best map we could find. They are VERY hard to get in Baja, so if you're headed that way, be sure to take one with you. As you head south, be sure to mark locations of motels and gas stations for your return trip -- guide books are notoriously out of date and there are generally more motels and gas stations than expected, but sometimes ones in ...

Fantastic book. Recipes always come out great!!!!!!!!!
I have over 100 cookbooks and I am going to cooking school, so when I say if I could only take one baking book to a desert island, I would take this one, it has to be good. I love my profesional baking books, but the recipes in them are for 12 dozen cookies, not exactly for the home baker. The Art and Soul is a great book for the home baker. Clear recipes and instructions. I have made the ...

A hippie version of the Great Gatsby
An episode of Rudy Maxa's "Smart Travels" devoted to San Francisco mentions that Angel Island was a fort during the Civil War. Why would San Francisco need a fort during in the Civil War? Rudy asks. Because, the park ranger tells him, the Confederate Army could have sent a ship into the Bay and up to Sacramento to seize the gold stored there. Brautigan! Maybe the premise of Brautigan's ...

The Natural History of Big Sur (California Natural History Guides)5 reviews
Paul Henson, Donald J. Usner

University of California Press, 1996

Excellent key to understanding Big Sur
I've been up and down the PCH several times, but as a midwesterner, most of the flora and lots of the fauna were unfamiliar to me. On my next motorcycle ride through Big Sur, I'll see the place with new eyes thanks to this wonderful guide. Now I know those yellow flowers that splash color over the cliffs in mid-July are lizard tail. What were formerly just "rocks" and "birds" and "trees" now ...

Adventure Kayaking- Trips from Big Sur to San Diego: Includes the Channel Islands4 reviews
Robert Mohle

Wilderness Press, 1998

This book is useful and a pleasure to read.
Adventure Kayaking is a clear, well-written and enjoyable book on kayaking for the beginner, or advanced kayaker. The personal narratives helped me to "get inside" the experiences the author was having on his adventures. I thought that the maps, trip discriptions and photographs worked very well together and would truly assist me in having my own kayak adventures.
