Pass the babies, please.
Satire is sadly lacking in today's society. Satire holds human vices and folly up for ridicule. Swift is not advocating the economy of eating babies, but maybe the fact that they are currently eating the body parts of aborted fetuses in China seems to steal something from Swift's modestly porposed satire-or maybe it is too outrageous seeming to be true. Nevertheless, this is a brilliant work ...

Back on top!
Tom Swift, Young Inventor is back on top with book #5-On Top of the World. Science and adventure are blended with a fast-paced mystery/thriller. I liked the facts about Mount Everest woven into the story, I feel like you would finish this book and know a little bit more about this area of the world. Great for kids of all ages. One bad thing about the book- the characters use "Dude" way too many ...

A GREAT re-launch for this series!
This is a great re-launch for the Tom Swift series! An action-packed story, told in the first person (like the new Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys series) make this an entertaining read for all ages. The cover art/packaging is also very cool, appealing to new readers to this series and collectors of old. I can't wait for more, and hopefully a new Dana Girls series is not far behind!

Deep book about dealing with loss
The best thing about this book is its refusal to play games with your child's mind. Rejecting the shameless tear-jerking of so much media aimed at children, this book embraces the grand tradition of children's books that takes children seriously. This is a book about dealing with loss about about letting go, but also a book that makes the reader reflect on what is good about life. Warts and all, ...

Sage Advice for Novice Equestrian
Being a novice rider who has been interested in zen methods and meditations for years, I would have bought this book even if it contained only this one piece of advice that I've seen in no other publication. The advice: Ask someone to check your posture while you're sitting on the horse, looking at you from behind because one side is usually stronger than the other and the stronger side tends to ...

A very thorough collection
In contrast with the principal competing collection of Swift's work (i.e., the Oxford Classics collection), the Norton Critical Edition contains all of "Gulliver's Travels," "A Tale of a Tub" (my favorite of Swift's works), and "The Battle of the Books," along with a solid selection of other writings in prose and poetry. Given the breadth of the selection, it is not surprising that this edition ...

Hey! Where's all the reviews?
This book, the major works of possibly the greatest English writer to ever live (that's saying something since England has the greatest writers, well, until the Beat Generation came along)should have a very long list of reviews. I want to know about this book people! You are being selfish! Having read Gulliver's Travels, I can say that Jonathan Swift was a genius. These works have so much with ...

good arrangements of songs my girls love
My youngest daughter loves Taylor Swift and her songs, and this book has renewed her interest in practicing the piano. What more could a mother hope for? Not only does it have the complete piano arrangement, but it also has all the guitar cords, too.

Tom Swift + re-invention = GREAT!
This is a great book in the newly re-invented Tom Swift series. In fact, this would have made a better book #1 and introduction to this new series (some early cover art shows this as #1 in the Young Inventor series.) Tom and his family, friends, and environment are nicely introduced in this story. We have descriptions of the characters and the town of Shopton (which boasts a "Statemeyer Street" ...

amazingly good read
It took me a while to get to this book - it kept being recommended by friends, but I was a bit put off by the effort I thought I would have to put into reading a book written 300 years ago. Well, I was really suprised - "Gulliver's Travels" is easier to reads, and is certainly written much better, than most modern novels. Swift certainly didn't have too high an opinion about humanity, ...

Dr. Swift has constructed through prodigious research a fascinating composite of information which he presents as a highly engrossing narrative of the role of Joseph P. Kennedy as U.S. ambassador to Great Britain on the eve of World War II. Swift's keen appraisal of Ambassador Kennedy's actions and motivations and the reprecussions thereof, along with a fresh look at the challenges and ...

Sally Swift proved to be an excellent teacher in her last book, and she maintains the title throughout the second edition. Good read aloud for my 9 year old son.
I was familiar with the original series my own father read, so I got the first of these new titles when they started coming out. My then 8 and now 9 year old son enjoys listening to them as a read aloud. He reads well and might find the reading level a little easy compared to what he reads himself, but its fun. It strikes me to be a tad on the conservative side: the bad guys are often an ...
