Truman277 reviews
David McCullough

Simon & Schuster, 1992

wonderful sense of American history
I have read most of McCullough's books, and so I knew that after reading this I would understand Harry S. Truman more deeply than I ever had. What I didn't know what was that I would learn so much about 20th century American history. McCullough is a great story-teller. His use of historical details to recreate the man and the times is magnificent. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

Torey L. Hayden

Element Books, 2004

Very good book
I was required to get this book for my special education training that I need for my master's. This book was very interesting. It showed the good and bad things Torey Hayden did in the course of serving this one child, Sheila. I could not put it down.

Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses125 reviews
Dorothy Richmond

McGraw-Hill, 1996

The perfect guide to accompany your Spanish studies
I would recommend this book along with Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Pronouns and Prepositions for any level learner of Spanish, but I'd advise you to have a little bit previous knowledge. It's really cheap, explains every important concept in a very simple way and includes lots of exercises to practice. I've been using this book since the summer after I finished my first year of Elementary ...

Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish80 reviews
Margaret Madigal

Doubleday, 1953

Opinion of Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish
This is an excellent book. Its approach to teaching a language is unique in that it gives fourteen patterns of Spanish words relating to English words. Rather than learning one word at a time, I can learn 50 - 100 words. I don't even have to learn individual words. I just have to remember the pattern, e.g. words ending in "ity" in English usually end in "idad" in Spanish. I also have been ...

The little prince191 reviews
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Teacher's Discovery, 2000

Little Prince speaks to the child in me
I was an adult when i read this book, and i really appreciated the lessons in life that Saint-Exupery shares through the Little Prince. A great book, full of beautiful illustrations, easy to read, while fun and sad at the same time. I personally read it as if Exupery is sharing with us the conversations he has with his own inner child, in the image of the Little Prince. That is why the ...

Boot Camp for Your Brain: A No-Nonsense Guide to the SAT I, Second Edition103 reviews
M. Denmark Manning

Xlibris Corporation, 2004

A perfect companion to "The Official Guide to the SATs"
I have tried plenty of different programs to enhance my SAT scores - books, classes, you name it. Boot Camp was organized in a fashion that was easy to use, and more importantly, yielded desired results. The contents of the book are concepts that are on the actual SAT and don't waste your time. I (like any other high schooler) have little to no time to practice SATs, but the great thing about ...

Awesome Book

Oh I was amazed by the size of it also, very well put together. Every person playing spades online or offline, young or old should pick up ...

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie125 reviews
Laura Joffe Numeroff

Scholastic, 1985

If You Give a Child This Book...You Will Have Hours of Fun Together
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie is a modern classic, beloved by children everywhere. It is also a book that teaches about sequential action and consequence. For example, if you give a mouse a cookie, he is going to ask for a glass of milk. If you give him a glass of milk, he will probably ask for straw. As the book continues, the drink leads to a napkin, which leads to a mirror (to check for a ...

Best Christmas Pagaent Ever

The Arabic Alphabet: How To Read and Write It81 reviews
Nicholas Awde, Putros Samano

Saqi Books, 2006

Learn the Arabic alphabet in about 2 days
I live in Kuwait and got tired of my eyes crossing in confusion every time I looked at Arabic writing. The alphabet is intimidating. Each letter has a different look depending upon where it is in a word for example. However, I bought this book thinking, "Hey, couldn't hurt." I found the book exceptionally easy to use. I continue to refer to it, even though I had mastered the basics of the ...

The Read Aloud Handbook43 reviews
Jim Trelease

Highbridge Audio, 1995

EXCELLENT BOOK!!! A must have for all parents
What a wonderful book!!! And what a fantastic resource!! I am so glad I found this while my children are still babies. Their father is grateful as well since this book has inspired him to take an active part in reading aloud to them. I do wonder if I read the same book as some others!?!? Trelease isn't against phonics. (He says over and over that he's not suggesting we do away with ...

In search of the miraculous: Fragments of an unknown teaching (Harvest book)62 reviews
P. D Uspenskiĭ

Harcourt, Brace and World, 1965

Great Introduction to the Esoteric Work
P.D. Ouspensky's "In Search of the Miraculous" is one of the most profound and one of most memorable books that I have ever read, and it is most certainly the must-read. Not only that, it also forces one to question one's reality, self-identity, actions, and surroundings. With each time that I read this book, I began to notice the number of little false "i's" that popped up in my being. Every ...

501 French Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All the Tenses in a New Easy-To-Learn Format Alphabetically Arranged62 reviews
Christopher Kendris

Barron's Educational Series, 1996

Great for clarifying that what you speak is right!
This is an invaluable book because if you speak another language (i.e Spanish, Italian, Portuguese) it will allow you to see patterns in French that are common--to see that you are saying it right. Further, that the verb you have known all your life does exist in the French language as well (or that it does not) and your vocabulary and understanding of grammar will grow by leaps and bounds as ...

What the Bible Says About Healthy Living: Three Biblical Principles That Will Change Your Diet and Improve ...42 reviews
Rex Russell

the best of its genre
The title of the book really says it all. God created us and gave us specific instructions on what to eat. We would be wise to follow them. I've given copies of this book to my whole family.

Japanese Kanji Flashcards, Vol. 1 (Third Edition)48 reviews
Max Hodges, Tomoko Okazaki

White Rabbit Press, 2006

Excellent Study Resource
I have used many different books, websites, and cards in my quest to learn Kanji, and this set of cards are by far the best I have come across. The cards themselves are very well made, with a plastic coating that has so far proven impervious to wear and tear. This set has all of the Kanji required for the 4th and 3rd levels of the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test.) In addition to the ...

Mathematics: From the Birth of Numbers62 reviews
Jan Gullberg

W. W. Norton & Company, 1997

Great way to put those brain cells through their paces again
While I always enjoyed math and science, I didn't particularly have time to "enjoy" the process of learning, thanks to our wonderful public school system, which focuses kids on getting a passing grade instead of actually learning something. This book is a wonderful cure for the apathy towards learning that is so prevalent today. "Mathematics" is a great refresher and a good starting point for ...

Anne of the Island65 reviews

Bantam Books, 1992

i read this over and over again.
this book never gets old. i've had it for so long and now i'm off to college and i still enjoy reading it cover to cover. anne is a great character, one who is easy to love and who explains herself well. the other characters are also quirky. something about this book is very universal, which i think explains why even in this century i still find myself being able to relate to Anne. the plot, ...
