La Vida Loca (Always Running): El Testimonio de un Pandillero en Los Angeles2 reviews
Luis J. Rodriguez

Fireside, 2005

A master piece!
This book was excellent! I read it in just a couple of days. Since I first started I couldn't take my eyes of what I was reading. The story is shocking and rude, yet interesting and mind-opening. It explicitly tells the struggles of growing up in a foreign country with everything against you and yet find the way to a new world full of possibilities. Excellent for tenagers, parents, and students.

Testimonios: Early California through the Eyes of Women, 181518482 reviews

Heyday Books, 2006

Immigrants and Incumbents
I wrote this review specifically for a collection of newspapers published in the Salinas Valley, but I think it's more broadly understandable. Hope you do. California: Land of Immigrants who Quickly Become Incumbents Testimonios is an interpreted collection of interviews with thirteen women, primarily Spaniards, who spoke with researchers employed by Hubert Howe Bancroft as he prepared ...

Telling to Live: Latina Feminist Testimonios (Latin America Otherwise)3 reviews
The Latina Feminist Group

Duke University Press, 2001

An Amazing Book
Telling To Live is an important book that will serve as both inspiration and information-source for years to come. While calls for a more diverse scholarship permeate academia, so few books are written from the viewpoint of Latinas. The use of the "testimonios" format is particularly compelling as the authors relate their personal experience to larger political issues such as empowerment, ...

Telling Identities: The Californio Testimonios3 reviews
Rosaura Sanchez

University of Minnesota Press, 1995

Better than I thought in spite of author's bias
Getting past the Marxism, I found a book capable of giving the reader a good understanding of the Californios and how they are situated in the macro history of California and the relations between the United States and Mexico. The chapters are divided into the issue of the missions, the liberalism after Mexico's independence wars (after 1822), situating the relationships of all the participants ...

La Escafandra y La Mariposa/ The Diving Bell and the Butterfly: Un Sobrecogedor Testimonio Sobre Los Limites ...2 reviews
Jean-Dominique Bauby

Planeta, 2008

Eloquent and Thoughtful
This book is captivating and touching in both English and Spanish. Knowing that each and every letter of every word written was such an effort and struggle to write...makes the experience of reading this novel that much more powerful. This book is truly eloquent and thoughtful, as well as inspiring and beautiful. The reader will close this book with a greater appreciation of what they have now.

Subject to Change: The Lessons of Latin American Women's Testimonio for Truth, Fiction, and Theory (North ...
Joanna R. Bartow

The University of North Carolina Press, 2005

By analyzing testimonial writing, works of fiction, and critical theory, Joanna Bartow examines the self-representation of testimonial subjects. She questions limits on reading testimonio that until recently have delegitimated the testimonial subject's autonomy. In addition, Bartow shows the importance of a feminist perspective on testimonio , a perspective met with some resistance. In specific ways, feminist theory sheds light on the ...

Mitch Albom

Grupo Nelson, 2007

Morrie Schwartz -- A Teacher to the Last
This wonderful book focuses on the meaning of life, from the perspective of a teacher (Morrie Schwartz) who is about to lose his life and his pupil, (Mitch Albom) who has lost his focus on what is important. They come together for 14 Tuesdays (just like they did while the author was a college student at Brandeis) before the professor passes away of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). This book is ...

Arnaldo Cruz-Malave

Palgrave Macmillan, 2007

In the tradition of the Latin American testimonio , this is the story of Juan Rivera, a.k.a. Juanito Xtravaganza, a Latino runaway youth who ends up homeless in the streets of New York in the late 70s and becomes partner of the internationally famous 1980s Pop artist Keith Haring during some of the most frenetically productive years of his brief life, as told to the author and retold by him. A hybrid text--part testimonio , part linguistic ...

Testimonio: On the Politics of Truth
John Beverley

University of Minnesota Press, 2004

These four germinal essays by John Beverley sparked the widespread discussion and debate surrounding testimonio—the socially and politically charged Latin American narrative of witnessing—that culminated with David Stoll's highly publicized attack on Rigoberta Menchú's celebrated testimonial text. Challenging Hardt and Negri's Empire, Beverley's extensive new introduction examines the broader historical, political, and ethical issues ...
