Shakespeare: The World as Stage (Eminent Lives) 65 reviews Bill Bryson
Eminent Lives, 2007
Who was Shakespeare? This is a brief, but very enjoyable and elegant read by someone who obviously loves this subject and its environment.
Bill Bryson gives this question of Shakespeare's identity a pretty good shot. There is apparently no definitive answer as to whether he was simply himself, someone else under a pseudo name, or several people under the same pseudo name. Even his portrait that we know him by ...

No Exit and Three Other Plays 47 reviews Jean-Paul Sartre
Vintage, 1989
Beautiful melancholy Sartre is sometimes given a reputation that far precedes him, as with many Nobel recipients. These plays are a testament against the skeptic's mindset.
"No Exit" is a modern-day interpretation of the antiquated "fire and brimstone" hell we are so accustomed to hearing about. Sartre adroitly picks up on the small idiosyncracies of human behavior and capitalizes on them with his version of hell. ...

Macbeth (Folger Shakespeare Library) 15 reviews William Shakespeare
Washington Square Press, 2003
Yale's may be the best edition of Macbeth Virtually all editions of Macbeth will have at least some annotations. Rummaging through five different editions, I preferred the Yale University Press version, edited by Burton Raffel, as having the most comprehensive and comprehensible notes, as well as an excellent introduction to Shakespeare's play. Raffel not only explains the meanings of obscure words, but also gives brief notes pertaining ...

Hamlet (The New Folger Library Shakespeare) William Shakespeare
Washington Square Press, 2003
If you want to read Shakespeare its has to be The new folger Library If you ever thought about reading Shakespeare but was turned off or intimidated by the old english, not so with the new folger editions. Your basically reading the play on all the right sided pages , with the left pages reserved for all the definitions and explanations of the sayings and words that might be dificult to understand. This makes it very easy and enjoyable to read.

Retribution: The Battle for Japan, 1944-45 44 reviews Max Hastings
Knopf, 2008
ONE OF THE BETTER CURRENT WORKS IN THIS AREA. This was quite a read and I must say that it has been sometime now that I read a work in which I gleaned so much information from. Like another reviewer here, I am getting a bit long in the tooth, and when I first picked this book up I was a bit discouraged at the weight, length, fine print, etc. But, like the other reviewer, once I read the first few pages, I was hooked.
Retribution, The ...

Twelfth Night (Folger Shakespeare Library) 4 reviews William Shakespeare
Washington Square Press, 2004
Great Comedy This play is about a girl who goes under cover as a man to try to find her twin brother who was lost in a shipwreck. she goes to work for the self indulgent Duke Orsino. the play is filled with comedic events such as the Duchess Olivia falls love with the main character, Viola, because Olivia thinks Viola is a man, as well as the drunken antics of Sir Toby and Sir Andrew. overall it was a ...

Interpersonal Communication Book, The (11th Edition) (MyCommunicationLab Series) 9 reviews Joseph A. DeVito
Allyn & Bacon, 2005
The Most Important Thing to Learn in College Many college students go to school filled with the idea that they will learn the subjects they chose to study. No one tells them that the most important thing in their life is going to be the ability to communicate. Even Einstein with all of his brilliance worked at a low level in the Swiss patent office until he published his famous papers.
Study after study shows that after college ...

Interpersonal Communication: Everyday Encounters (Wadsworth Series in Communication Studies) 3 reviews Julia T. Wood
Wadsworth Publishing, 2006
Great intro text This book is wonderfully accessible and serves as a great introduction to interpersonal communication and preparation for upper-level coursework on relational communication. I have used this textbook for 4 years at a community college and 2 years at a state university and the students have always rated this textbook very highly. Although they do state that the chapters are a bit long, they feel ...

Wicked - Piano/Vocal Arrangement 38 reviews Stephen Schwartz
Hal Leonard, 2004
Wicked Music Great collection with plenty of challenge for the intermediate piano player. Several songs are written in keys with many flats/sharps thus requiring patience and practice. Includes a few pictures from the play, also. Label on the front calls this a "standard piano/vocal format with the melody in the piano part."

Understanding Movies, 11th Edition 17 reviews Louis Giannetti
Prentice Hall, 2007
The best and most clear introduction to the analysis of film Gianetti's classic textbook has been around for a long time, and gone through several printings and new editions. There's a reason for that: it is one of the best introductions to the analysis and appreciation of film that is around. This is the book I was assigned when I took my first film class ("Film as Humanities") in college, and it opened up my eyes to a whole range of elements that ...

Public Speaking: Strategies for Success (5th Edition) (MySpeechLab Series) 3 reviews David Zarefsky
Allyn & Bacon, 2007
Public speaking made easy. For most people, public speaking isn't something that comes easy. In fact, most people dislike giving speeches (putting it mildly). I was one of those people that didn't come easy for. But, after careful studying of the tips/techniques to give a good speech, ways to analyze your audience, and many other concepts, I was able to give successful speeches, with the confidence that being well ...

Broadway Tails: Heartfelt Stories of Rescued Dogs Who Became Showbiz Superstars 1 review Bill Berloni, Jim Hanrahan

Could've been better With the plethora of dog-training books and television shows available to consumers today, it was natural to believe this book would be the superstar amongst them - just as its subjects are superstars of the canine world. However, though the stories conveyed in this book remain inspiring - and the book's message (that rescuing orphaned animals from shelters and supporting that worthy cause) ...

An Actor Prepares 26 reviews Constantin Stanislavski
Theatre Arts Book, 1989
Excellent not only for actors but for any performing artist! Stanislavski himself says, "My system is for those who have a creative nature. It's for the talented". On stage or on a movie set you have to be believable. All musicians should read this book (or any performing artist in that matter). It would be a priceless benefit for them... For instance, many soloists these days are displaying an unnatural, forced "phrasing". If they were asked to speak the ...
