Teh Triggering Town: Lectures and Essays on Poetry and Writing
Poet and college professor Richard Hugo, a one time student of Theodore Roethke, offers practical advice for any writer in this short book of essays and commentaries. His wit and wisdom, garnered through years of teaching, are like finding diamonds on every page. This has proven to be a priceless book for me. Especially compelling to me was Ci Vediamo, stories about his time in Italy and a ...

Best novel I have read in years
This book works on two levels. First it is a page turner. You can't put it down, you can't wait to see what happens next. Second, it is just plain good writing. I believe this book will be considered great literature in the years to come, just as we read Joyce, Woolf, etc. in literature classes in college and high school. But don't let THAT stop you from reading it now.

Forgotten History
This book is about the inspirational story of North Platte, Nebraska, a town that served as a brief haven for millions of World War II American soldiers. From Christmas Day 1941 until the end of the war, the residents welcomed every troop train with food, drink, magazines and words of encouragement. This was a brief moment of time that sustained these soldiers when they were away from their ...

Straight to the Moon, Alice...
When is a love story not a romance novel? When is a book about Japanese POWs not a book about war? When it's A Town Like Alice. I've been a fan since seeing the Masterpiece Theater version about 20 years ago (after which I had to immediately run out and buy the book. There are lots of reviews posted here, so we don't need another rehash of the plot. Suffice it to say, if you are NOT a romantic, ...

A fast and engaging read
Hessler writes candidly about his experiences in China as if he were writing to a friend back home. His accounts of conversations between himself and the locals are priceless, both funny and sad. This book really brings to light the hardships of Chinese farmers and their children, who seek to escape their rural lives by getting an education and joining the Communist Party. Hessler's ...

This is a favorite in our house. The chorus of "Dump it in, smash it down, drive around the trashy town!" will probably get stuck in your head too. Don't miss this one!

Great source of ideas and information!
I love the data and insight! Great tool if you want to investigate a variety of potential locations. I use it along side of my new copy of "Cities Ranked & Rated". Next to actually living there, it may be the best source of information and insight. Try their magazine, "Retire Here", for a regular infusion of inspiration and real estate ads.

The Face of Eternity and the Mind of God
By most accounts Thornton Wilder (1897-1975) considered himself a teacher rather than a writer--a curious situation given than he won numerous literary awards, including three Pulitzers. Among these prize-winners was OUR TOWN, first staged in 1938. It is generally considered to be the single most famous play written by an American author, and Samuel French Inc., which holds the amateur ...

Now I Understand.
First off, thank you to Professor Loewen for his painstaking research. Biased or not he backs up his information and makes you think as long as your mind is open and willing to absorb. I'm an African-American, 37, grew up in a all-black neighborhood, but it wasn't always that way. I remember and have pictures of when I was 4 or 5, my next door neighbors were white and at least half of my ...

A Clear Read
I first saw Phil Town on "The Millionaire Inside" on CNBC, which prompted me to pick up his book. I found his book provides clear, step-by-step instructions on how to buy wonderful companies that have personal meaning, and purchasing them for at least a 50% discount, and then watching how they perform in the market. He introduced "tools" to check every day for a couple of minutes, depending on ...

Very Well Done
This is a great book to introduce children to the concept of community and what things make up a community. My son, (in Grade K), loved the story, and its main character, Charlie. A great book for grades K-2, learning about their community...and what that exactly means.

ONE OF THE BETTER VERSIONS OF THIS OLD, OLD STORY!
As near as we can tell, Aesop's Fables date back to at least the 6th Century B.C. I personally feel that many of these tales are even older and Aesop had probably recorded quite a number of old folk tales from the past. Be-that-as-it-may, this is a rewrite of one of my favorite of Aesop's Fables. This story has been told and retold in countless languages, in countless countries and it would be ...

The Day he World Came to Town:9/11 in Gander, Newfoundlan
Most amazing book I've read. Most Americans were unaware that all of incomming flights at the time of the bombings were diverted to the nearest airports not within USA borders. This story is wonderful and shows how the human race really cares about one another. It was hard to put down.
