Great Focus; exceptional primer
There is much to say in favor of this book. Its main focus is the operation of tribal governments. Because there is so much variety, the author looks at five representative governments in some detail--the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois League), the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, the Teton Sioux, the Pueblos, and the Yakimas (who since the publication of this book have revised the official spelling, using ...

Great photography and very informative
I've got many books on tattooing and body piercing and I consider this one of my favourite. It looks at the possible reasons why people in the west get body decorations and compares them to the ritualistic purposes there are in tribal cultures. I like it a lot because it focuses on the ancient and traditional aspect of body piercing, tattooing and scarification. It contains excepional ...

A must read for everyone who loves the church and her "missing generation"
Tribal Church is perhaps the best-ever book for those who sincerely want to create a place for young adults to worship and serve. At last, we can stop our hand-wringing and lamentations over the absence of our adult children in church because now, Carol Merritt has offered us a vision of the church in which everyone, young and old and in-between, has a place, a voice and an equal opportunity to ...

Beauty does not need a context
I do not (yet) own this book, but I spent half an hour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art gift shop recently in an absolute trance paging through it. The sole review here trashing this beautiful book struck me as so unfair that I feel compelled to write a rebuttal. The reviewer is concerned that this collection of photographs does not represent the daily lives and cultural practices of the ...

Pleasantly surprised, great value
My husband and I recently purchased a mask at an African and Caribbean festival. We loved the mask, and it definitely found its home over our fireplace. However, the vendor only could tell us that the mask was from Mali. With a desire to learn about our mask (which sports some unusual features) I decided to purchase a book, with no idea whether or not information about my mask would be ...

A great resource for missions
In Incarnational Ministry, Heibert and Menses "use both theological and scientific insights to examine how we can best plant living churches in different types of societies" (pg. 14). They integrate theology and the social sciences in an effort to provide understanding of human societies and cultures so as to help motivate and guide church planting efforts in various societies. They argue that ...

Types, categories and groups
"Prejudice", we are told, isn't "reasonable". "Race" is an "illogical" or "unscientific" concept. Christians tell us we must "love all others as our brothers" - and sisters in a more ecumenical world. Yet Chief Executives can label entire nations as elements of an "Axis of Evil" and make or threaten war with impunity. And masses of the population support them. Why should this be so? David ...

Helpful original work on Central Asia
This new and original contribution to texts on Central Asia under the Communist empire is necessary, original, insightful and typically liberal. The irony of the liberalism here is that in the 1930s and 1970s the same liberalism was used to describe how Soviet Communism would triumph over western capitalism. Then the academics heralded the progress in central asia, whereby women were no longer ...

Interesting book
It's light in information, but interesting nonetheless. It has black and white drawings of various tribal tattoos. It also seperates them into sections (by tribes) and gives basic information on each tribe, along with a basic overview of Tattoos in general. I bought the version with the body paints, which I wouldn't suggest. It's awfully gimicy.

Tribal Theory in Native American Literature: Dakota and Haudenosaunee Writing and Indigenous Worldviews
Penelope Myrtle Kelsey

Scholars and readers continue to wrestle with how best to understand and appreciate the wealth of oral and written literatures created by the Native communities of North America. Are critical frameworks developed by non-Natives applicable across cultures, or do they reinforce colonialist power and perspectives? Is it appropriate and useful to downplay tribal differences and instead generalize about Native writing and storytelling as a whole? ...

It was very informative as far as the philosophies behind the punk and neo tribal style. There is a big section on Perry Farrel (lead singer for Janes Addiction) and his reasoning behind punk and neo tribal style. It really makes you think. You don't have to be punk to enjow this book and it's contents. I would definetely recommend this book!
