Wonderful story
I read ths book along with about 4 co-workers; we had formed a small reading group. This was my pick for the month. We all thought it was a terrific book and had a lot to discuss about it at the end. I'm looking forward to another book by this author.

War and Peace
We are using this book alongside of the Tapestry of Grace curriculum. It is an excellent source for chronological history. Joy Hakim presents the information in a manner that is easily understood for my girls in lower grades as well as detailed enough for my high school age daughter. I highly recommend her entire series.

Great Companion to THUNDER BELOW!
First, let me say that I am an unabashed admirer of Adm. Fluckey. I truly see him as a hero both professionally and privately. He was always happy to autograph items for me, and even offered some invaluable advise upon occasion. That being said, anyone who has read anything on his wartime exploits will undoubtedly walk away agreeing that he was a true American Hero. Definitely read his ...

A Good Starting Point
This work is a good starting point for those who wish to learn about and to a limited extent understand the operational use of US PT Boats in WWII. The book takes the technological route here and delves in to the process of design, weapons, crewing and tactics associated with these small craft. As is the case with most of these books on naval matters it does not deal with the operational ...

Mochizuki, K. (1993). Baseball Saved Us. New York. LEE & LOW BOOKS. The story of "Shorty" and his family living at an interment camp during WWII can be used when teaching students about war, especially WWII. Younger students can relate to the character of "Shorty" and his struggles with fitting in and the hardships he feels among peers. Older students can debate the equality issues and the ...

A Must Read
Author Miller has justly received many honors for this book which present the US planning for response to any Japanese aggression against the United States during the period between World War I and World War II. Miller also wrote another book, "Bankrupting The Enemy" about the US economic actions concerning Japan leading up to the war that is equally high quality and required reading for World ...

The Quiet Warrior:A Biography of Admiral Raymond A. Spruance
Buell is to be praised for this significant contribution the history of WWII. He is able to compare and contrast Spruance against the better know Halsey in a fashion that gives the reader a perception of how the men of the fifth and third fleet (one in the same) viewed Spruance. He was brilliant, but conservative. Regarded as timid at Midway and at the "Marianas Turkey Shoot" by the ...

Every American should read this book
America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It, by Mark Steyn, is one of the most important books I've read in the last several years. I believe it should be read by all Americans and Europeans. Steyn looks at demography and discovers some chilling statistics - the birth rate of non-Muslim Europeans is well below replacement rates whereas the birth rates among Muslims, including European ...

Wonderful book
I have to admit that it has been some time since I read this book, but it's hysterical. I can still remember (from 1966) quite a bit of the dialog. Unfortunately Roger Hall's obituary was in the paper this morning and I started to look for another copy of it. It's a shame that he didn't go into the CIA, it would have been a much funnier world. Even though it looks like I won't be able to ...
World War II GI: US Army Uniforms 1941-45 in colour photographs
Richard Windrow
Crowood Press
, 2008
The widespread interest in the American soldier's dress and equipment in World War II has never before been served by a major book recreating the GI's appearance by color photography. A striking study that takes techniques to a new level; live models, wearing an enormous range of authentic surviving uniforms. This book will be hailed as a "bible" by militaria collectors, modelers, illustrators, film wardrobe departments and anyone with an ...

The Truth Hurts
Negative reactions to this book here reiterate the enormous capacity that Americans share for abject denial. Human behavior is as simple and uncomplicated as it could be. People have left reviews here who have not read this book, so horrified are they that they may be forced to accept that this country is not, and hasn't been since 1776, the Disneyland Main St. USA that they so cherish. ...
Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant
65 reviews
LeClue [Kindle], 2007
Simplicity of character is sometimes the highest form
Grant finished this lengthy memoir on the eve of his death from throat cancer. Impoverished at the time, the ex-President made his wife rich from the proceeds. Simple, straightforward, earnest narrative, sometimes ironic, sometimes colorful, always unpretentious. Inevitably self-justifying, but candid nonetheless. The most memorable anecdote describes his first action in the 1861-65 war. ...

Excellent !
Reads like a Clancy thriller. I recommend this book along with Michael Gannon's "Operation Drumbeat" so one can understand the havoc wreaked by German U boats along the Eastern seaboard against totally unprepared and in many cases complacent ships in the early days of World War II.

Deguello
I've given 'No Surrender' five stars simply because it is such an incredible testimony of Japanese...and human...determination. Onoda's story is especially striking when we compare it to the reaction of the majority of Americans [granted, primarily noncombatants] to the prolonged wars of Vietnam and Iraq. By extrapolation, 'No Surrender' shows the enormous challenge American civilization faces ...

Excellent account of an interesting WW2 U-Boat Commander, not your typical German stereotype, Teddy Suhren's autobiography is a must read for anyone interested in the Battle of the Atlantic and the U-Boat Campaign of the East Coast of Florida. Suhren is a fun loving, professional who works hard and plays hard. Highly recommend the book.

A Classic Indeed
Edward L. Beach, Jr. rolled aspects of several real Navy officers into "Rich" Richardson, the central character in Run Silent, Run Deep, including "Swede" Momsen, "Mush" Morton, Howard Gilmore, "Dusty" Dornin, George Street and, of course, Beach himself. In the same way, the three fleet boats Beach served in, Trigger, Tirante and Piper, provided models for some scenes in the story. If you've ...

A brief history of the Fleet Boat
Jim Christley has written a short (48 pg) but masterful history of the submarines of WWII. Not intended as a comprehensive operational history, but rather a thumbnail sketch of the development and anatomy of these warships. After a chapter on the design and development leading up to the Gato class, the equipment section starts off with a review of weapons. Sections on torpedoes and gun ...
