Dear America: Letters Home from Vietnam13 reviews

W. W. Norton & Company, 2002

First hand account of the Vietnam War
After the amazing documentary about Vietnam that solely exists of actor voice overs of funny, goofy, anxious and heartbreaking letters home from soldiers at the battlefront in Vietnam, accompanied by graphic footage of the war itself, this book came out. It contains the letters read out in the movie, and additionally has some more background information about the soldiers who wrote the letters. ...

Cracker!: The Best Dog in Vietnam18 reviews
Cynthia Kadohata

Atheneum, 2007

Great Book!
I got this book for my 11 year old after he requested it at a book fair where they wanted 5.40 more for it and was thrilled to find it less here. Although, when I got it I figured it was a kids book, I found that after picking it up out of curiousity I enjoyed it too. The switching between the soldier and the dog thoughts are very smooth and the portrayal of a soldier and his relationship with ...

Achilles in Vietnam: Combat Trauma and the Undoing of Character37 reviews
Jonathan Shay

Simon & Schuster, 1995

Review of "Achiiles in Vietnam"
One of the books I had been planning to read for several months is Dr. Jonathan Shay's groundbreaking work: "Achilles in Vietnam - Combat Trauma and the Undoing of Character." I am glad that I finally found the time to acquaint myself with its message. The book is remarkable for several reasons. On its surface, it is one of the most comprehensive examinations of the phenomenon of Post Traumatic ...

Vietnam (Country Guide)17 reviews
Nick Ray

Lonely Planet, 2007

Trustworthy, comprehensive with excellent maps.
I am reviewing the L.P.2007 guide. Note: most of the other reviews are for older editions, ie. Pre-2007. I was in Vietnam January-February 2007 and used this guide. The guide has maps that are superb and easy to use. Both the accommodations and restaurants I chose from the guide's recommendations were good to very good. The cost for accommodations are listed in dollars, instead of ...

Vietnam: A History59 reviews
Stanley Karnow

Penguin (Non-Classics), 1997

Vietnam: A Long History Thus A Long Book
It was a long book - for good reason - so stick with me. I also took some time aside to view the items outlined above to give me a visual and cinematic sense of what happened in Vietnam and how the whole business is perceived - before, during, and after. Vietnam: A History, as previously mentioned, is an extensive and detailed account of the goings on in Vietnam. Karnow begins as early as 208 ...

The Rough Guide to Vietnam 5 (Rough Guide Travel Guides)9 reviews
Rough Guides

Rough Guides, 2006

Couldn't get along without it
Rough Guide has become one of my favorites. It's value is that it targets a group beyond the backpackers. Vietnam is no exception. The maps are good, recommendations we used were always good. There is plenty of practical information about getting around and still has info the the backpackers, but many suggestions for more upscale restaurants and hotels. This was our primary guidebook for 3 weeks ...

Sherisse Pham

Frommers, 2008

Well Done
I used this book while in Vietnam in August 2006. It was very helpful in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Cannot comment on it's usefulness in other cities.

The Killing Zone: My Life in the Vietnam War26 reviews
Frederick Downs

W. W. Norton, 1993

Written as Remembered. That's Important
Like most who have written books about their Vietnam experience, I believe Mr. Downs has told his story as he remembered it. There are several books out about the war where it's obvious that the authors are trying their best to paint a picture he or she thinks movie producers want to produce. Mr. Downs was very kind to the children when he described them giving the GIs the finger. Explaining that ...

Vietnam Wars 1945-199016 reviews
Marilyn Young

Harper Perennial, 1991

"Bias"? Please . . .
Young's book is the best single volume detailing the American interventions in Vietnam. Unlike many, Young actually knows something about Vietnam as a country, and unlike many, she meticulously supplies references for her facts almost all of which are to accessible and checkable sources. But my real point in writing this is the idea, put forward by so many outside the profession of history (I ...

Warriors: An Infantryman's Memoir of Vietnam10 reviews
Robert Tonsetic

Presidio Press, 2004

The challenge of wartime command
"Warriors: An Infantryman's Memoir of Vietnam," by Robert Tonsetic, is an excellent addition to the canon of American military memoirs. In the preface Tonsetic notes that the book is "essentially a personal history" of his tour as a rifle company commander during the first six months of 1968--"the bloodiest year of the Vietnam War." The book includes eight crisply drawn maps that illustrate ...

Vietnam Today: A Guide To A Nation At A Crossroads4 reviews
Mark A. Ashwill, Thai Ngoc Diep

Intercultural Press, 2004

The best book on Vietnamese culture by a foreigner..
As a Vietnamese-American living in the US for 26 years, I consider this book one of the best ever written about Vietnam nowadays undergoing great changes. Very insightful, honest, fair, well balanced, non bias and not influenced by,for the better or worse, the American experience in Vietnam. Only a few corrections are recommended for next editions. First the Chams ( not Chans), are a malay group of ...

Vietnam Cambodia Laos & the Greater Mekong (Multi Country Guide)3 reviews
Nick Ray

Lonely Planet, 2007

Decent guidebook for the region
I am not a big fan of Lonely Planet guidebooks as I find they are really lacking in detail but this was the newest guidebook on the region I was visiting so I purchased it. It was decent but definitely lacking. Hopefully one of the other guidebooks will print a new edition for the Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos countries.

Vietnam Inc.7 reviews
Philip Jones Griffiths

Phaidon Press, 2006

superb collection
This is a superb collection of photos that depicts the ironies and inanities that resonated throughout the US misguided war in Vietnam. There are haunting images of casual and mindless brutality, there are wonderful juxtapositions and there are the unforgettable faces of those caught up in the war as they try to lead their lives amidst wanton destruction. This is a book about betrayal...the ...

Vietnam Zippos: American Soldiers' Engravings and Stories (1965-1973)15 reviews

University Of Chicago Press, 2007

Edwards - not Buchanan - wrote this tale
While reading this extraordinary and unique book it is obvious that Edwards put the time and effort into this project and Buchanan packaged it. Yet Buchanan seems to want all the credit. She alone is listed as the author, but what did she actually do? She wrote a distant and dry essay - well written no doubt, but what exactly is her relationship to this fascinating object called the Vietnam ...

Robert McMahon, Thomas Paterson

vietnam
this book is such a waste of time, it tells you only the point of view of one's man ego and his denial of america's defeat by the north vietnamese. throughout the whole war,the u.s miltary only rely on body counts for there victory ,hoping the north vietnamese would fear the u.s army and surrender ,but in the end ,they were wrong ,the nva and viet cong were determine to fight to the death. ...

National Geographic Traveler: Vietnam (National Geographic Traveler)4 reviews
James Sullivan

National Geographic, 2006

A Beautiful Look at Vietnam
Vietnam has never looked so good. The writing is superb, giving the reader a rich history and an insider's view of Vietnam today. The photography is what you would expect from National Geographic, each photo telling a story about the place it was taken. In all, the book is the best of the lot of Vietnam travel books. I recommend it for your trip to Hanoi, Saigon or anywhere in between.

Vietnam Riverine Craft 1962 - 75 (New Vanguard)2 reviews
Gordon Rottman

Osprey Publishing, 2006

Once again a great job on the book.
This book is great for the person looking for the basic history of these craft and what the troops who used them had to deal with. Covers the strengths and weaknesses of the craft. Color palates are great as usual! Recommend for the gamer looking for the basic run down of these great craft and the areas they were used in. (One thrid of Vietnam "is" covered by the river delta. With man made ...
