The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down210 reviews
Anne Fadiman

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1998

What else can I add? Except this is my favorite book, ever.
If anyone's been patient enough to read all hundred-plus reviews up to this point, they already know what this book is about, how well-written it was, how well researched, and how terribly humane. All I can add is that, though I read (well, start, at any rate) about a hundred books a year, and have been doing so for about three decades now, this is the single best book I've ever read.

God help Us!
Have been reading this book and it will open many an eye as it has opened mine. We really need to throw out all the changes to our Constitution and go back to the original before all the addenums muddied the water. Common sense needs to prevail and basics applied......Please Dear Lord before we lose this great country......

Skinny Bitch in the Kitch: Kick-Ass Recipes for Hungry Girls Who Want to Stop Cooking Crap (and Start Looking ...70 reviews
Rory Freedman, Kim Barnouin

Running Press, 2007

great for a new vegan
I'm a new vegan who's been cooking conventionally for over 40 years and needed help. I'm a good cook but I needed ideas and inspiration to make meals for my family every night without using meat. In the 4 weeks I've been a vegan I have made many of the recipes in this book and they've gone over great with my husband (and with me). They were easy, not too time consuming and helped me be a vegan ...

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7)3199 reviews
J. K. Rowling

Arthur A. Levine Books, 2007

The 7th and the Last
Book reviews aren't what I'm used to doing, but really, Harry Potter is great. Being the seventh and the last book in the Harry Potter series, and being the second in the whole series that I have ever read, the first being the Half-Blood Prince, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was fantastic. The whole thing just filled you up with strong emotions. One of the first things you would react to, ...

Holt Paperbacks, 2007

Repairing Your Relationship (and Your Childhood)
Before counselor Harville Hendrix, Ph.D. teaches you how to improve your relationship, he asks you to think about why you were attracted to your partner in the first place. The answer, he explains, is that you were looking for a mate who possesses the same basic qualities as your parents. Why? Because people subconsciously seek relationships with those who will exorcise their childhood pain. ...

The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want36 reviews
Sonja Lyubomirsky

Penguin Press HC, The, 2007

A WOW of a book
I haven't even finished this and I am already happier. I consider myself to actually be pretty happy and I know enough to know that happiness is not in material things. Nonetheless, I am pretty cynical, not very forgiving and I don't have that many friends. A lot of other happiness books and articles I've read insist that if you just look on the bright side, have a big social circle, and learn ...

The Weight Loss Cure They Don't Want You to Know About475 reviews
Kevin Trudeau

Alliance Publishing, 2007

Physician recommended
I am a Physician and I decided to do this diet after having had two pregnancies back to back. Since my HCG levels had been so high for 2 years, I felt it would be safe for me. It is very rigid, but it is for only 6 weeks and you really do lose about a pound a day. The book really does enlighten you as to how the food industry is responsible for making Americans obese. The shots are not painful- ...

The Really Inconvenient Truths: Seven Environmental Catastrophes Liberals Don't Want You to Know ...21 reviews
Iain Murray

Regnery Publishing, 2008

Skewers the paradigms of the liberal environmental fascist movement
Iain Murray well-written book skewers the fundamental principles of the radical left environmental movement, and does it very artfully. Clearly, this is a compelling book which mastefully states the case of the failures of the environmental movement, and their `liberal fascistic" approach to society. Murray shows at the very beginning that the environmental movement focuses on (1) identifying ...

Harmonic Wealth: The Secret of Attracting the Life You Want147 reviews
James Arthur Ray

Hyperion, 2008

Power Title for 2008!
There are just a few books that my husband and I have both read and enjoyed cover to cover. This is one. As a voracious reader I can tell you this title left me smarter, more inspired, more intentional and conscious than I was on page one. If we are judged by the caliber of books we house in our library, well, then, I am feeling like a star right now. This title has been named one of ...

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America1076 reviews
Barbara Ehrenreich

Holt Paperbacks, 2002

It IS Realistic!
This was me! For those who reviewed the book and said that Ehrenreich was "unrealistic", I'm going to share my story. Several years ago my ex-boyfriend and I could have been in the book; we were each working a full-time job and he also had TWO part-time jobs at the same time (one after his full-time job and another on the weekends). Our jobs were in electronic sales at a big chain store and ...

The Success Principles(TM): How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be269 reviews
Jack Canfield, Janet Switzer

Collins Living, 2007

No wonder the stellar reviews!
If someone really USES it and really does the exercises (which I need to now that I have finished the book), this book could be life-changing. The way the processes and excercises are peppered with amazing success stories from real life, and fantastic quotes...I highlighted like crazy. But now it's time to take action! I'd give this book ten stars if I could.

A World of Art14 reviews
Henry M. Sayre

Prentice Hall, 2006

A Great Introduction to Art!
A World of Art by Henry Sayre is meant to give individuals their first exposure to art and art history. This is the textbook I use for my Art 101 course and it fills that purpose exceptionally well. The book is broken down into 5 segments with a total of 22 chapters. Part One: The Visual World - is about understanding the art one comes across. Chapters in this section discuss themes ...
