The Brothers K 117 reviews David James Duncan
Dial Press Trade Paperback, 1996
Simply Outstanding Beautiful writing. Simply one of the best books by a living author that I've read. If you have interest in great writing, baseball, or Christianity, you'll enjoy the book. If you're a fan of all three, it'll be one of your favorites.

The Living Blood 93 reviews Tananarive Due
Washington Square Press, 2002
Great book! Awesome writer. I loved this book more than the first one. I love Due's writing style. The Living Blood had been on the edge of my seat the entire time. I love the fact that David and Jessica have to work together to save their little Fana. The ending was great. If I didn't know that there was a third book, this one would have summed it up for me but left me wanting a third one.

More Than Anything Else 56 reviews Marie Bradby
Scholastic, 1995
"More Than Anything Else" - a review Well, 53 Five Star reviews pretty much says it all.
This is a beautiful book. Not only is the artwork superb (see the cover and Amazon's "Search Inside This Book" feature) but the story is glorious. A triumph of the human spirit when everything in the immediate environment says 'give up' and 'don't dare to dream'.
In this fictionalized story of Booker T. Washington, a young boy ignores ...

Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the ... 38 reviews Harriet A. Washington
Harlem Moon, 2008
It's always useful to be reminded... Although I would like to think that I couldn't be tempted (as a medical researcher) to break the rules and to impair human dignity, it was a very disturbing eye-opener to read this book! It made me remember a few events in my medical education when I saw my teachers cross the line, not as dramatically as most of what Washington portrays, but nevertheless the start of the slippery slope, and I ...

Cruel Sea 81 reviews Nicholas Monsarrat, Harry Shefter
Washington Square Press, 1985
Ping . . . . . . Ping . . . . . . Ping . . . . . . Ping . . . . . . Ping . . . . . . The unrelenting echo of the sonar punctuates this understated J. Arthur Rank film with a taut atmosphere of suspense. Novelist Eric Ambler's intelligent script remains faithful to Nicholas Monserrat's novel about the last voyage of HMS Compass Rose and all who sailed on her. The splendid performances of Jack Hawkins as her captain and Donald Sinden as his First Mate bring the novel to life, as do ...

Chasing Ghosts: A Soldier's Fight for America from Baghdad to Washington 141 reviews
NAL, 2006
An important read. Chasing Ghosts is an honest and powerful account of Reickhoff's experience in Iraq. While it's tough reading at points, I think it is good for us to recognize the reality of what we're asking the men and women of our armed forces to do for this country every day.
It took a lot of courage for Reickhoff to write this book and my hat goes off to him for doing it; and for the important work ...

The ENCHANTED APRIL: THE ENCHANTED APRIL 25 reviews Von arnim
Washington Square Press, 1995
Enchanting Having loved both filmed versions of this story, I came to the book not anticipating any surprises, and in that respect I was correct. What I did get, however, was a more fully-formed understanding of each of the four women who come to San Salvatore. Each has her own quest, and each is surprised in the way that her quest is resolved.
Elizabeth von Arnim can harness language in ways that few ...

The Bonus Army : An American Epic 27 reviews Paul Dickson, Thomas B. Allen
Walker & Company, 2004
A Compelling Book Allen and Dickson have written a very compelling book on the history of the Bonus Army, veterans from World War I who converged on Washington in 1932 and subsequent years to demand their promised payment known as the "bonus". The authors give us a good background as to who some of these veterans were, what conditions were like in the country during the years of the First World War and the next ...

The Americans 28 reviews
Steidl/National Gallery of Art, Washington, 2008
The definitive "The Americans" We're lucky to have this edition. Robert Frank is an old man with health issues now. That he is healthy enough to oversee this work is wonderful. Everything about this edition - especially in comparison to the 2007 Delpine edition I purchased earlier this year - is first-rate. I wish I had known this was coming out!
The book is a little smaller than the Delpine, but that's the only real ...

Dragon Sword and Wind Child 32 reviews Noriko Ogiwara
VIZ Media LLC, 2007
A Favorite Finally Goes Back Into Print (fewer spoilers) Dragon Sword and Wind Child is one of my favorite novels. What's to like? Saya is a village girl in Toyoashihara (sort of a mystical/magical Japan), a land split by the war between the Gods that created the land: The God of Light and the Goddess of Darkness (and Death). Saya has been raised to love the Light and is shocked when strange people start proclaiming that she is one of the Goddess of ...

Almost a Miracle: The American Victory in the War of Independence 30 reviews John Ferling
Oxford University Press, USA, 2007
Good Book I really enjoy reading this book. I learned a lot about our country history. I agree with the author we were lucky to win the war. I found that I could not use the Table of content to go to the chapters. I've used that before to go to chapters in other books for the Kindle. Since the chapters in this book are really long ones suggest you bookmark each time you come to a new chapter. Makes ...

To Dance With the White Dog 24 reviews Terry Kay
Washington Square Press, 1991
An Exquisite Classic This is one of my favorite books of all time. It at first seems like a simple story of a man growing older. It mixes the touching and often amusing story of his frustration with the constant worrying of his adult children, about whether his mind is slipping, with one of the sweetest love stories I've ever read. When you think that you have finished, the author then tells the origin of the story ...

The Way It Is 27 reviews Patrick Sanchez
Kensington, 2003
Anyone struggling with their weight, read this NOW This book was funny and poignant. I liked Ruby's character. She reminds me of myself. I complain about my weight all the time like she does. My goal is be Simone's size. Read the book and find out for yourselves. This book gives all the ladies their own voice and I thought that was well done coming from a male author. He knows the women.

Entries from a Hot Pink Notebook 24 reviews Todd Brown
Washington Square Press, 1995
Insightful outlook on life. This book is an insightful look at life of a typical teenager boy being scrutinized by critical eye of today's society. Entries From a Hot Pink Notebook is a well-written novel by a first time writer Todd D. Brown. However to fully appreciate the beauty of this book you have to be open minded and willing to accept an open look into a life of a gay teenager. Honest and sometimes heartbreaking ...

Citizen Washington 33 reviews William Martin
Warner Books, 1999
Audio version: Entertaining! The audiobook runs 6 hours and is surprisingly fun to listen to. Other reviewers have covered most of what you need to know so I will just add a parental advisory: contains rough language of a creative sort that boys of a certain age may like to quote, so if you are looking for something educational for a family car trip, this may not be suitable. Otherwise, I certainly recommend this book as an ...

The Funhouse Mirror: Reflections on Prison 24 reviews Robert Ellis Gordon
Washington State University, 2000
A Terrific Collection of Prison Writing I started reading The Funhouse Mirror up while I was waiting for a connection in an airport. I got so absorbed in it that I almost missed my plane. It is a collection of stories by prisoners in Washington State. Their pieces are remarkable, but what really makes the book are the interspersed commentaries and stories by the editor, Robert Ellis Gordon. Gordon spent several years working in the ...
