Personal Stories of Baseball Heroes
Today, with so many players having multi-million dollar contracts, I first looked at this book in the store because of the title. But it turns out to be even more interesting than I thought. It's interviews with a lot of the great players from back in the old days, and it really gives you a sense of what it was like for them personally to be playing the game back in the 50s and 60s. I was ...

Cure for the winter blues
This is the perfect baseball book for all seasons, but especially now with the World Series over, and spring training still months away. It also seems appropriate to me that this book is set during one of the "Golden Ages" of baseball between 1947 and 1964, a time when the only stats that mattered reflected exploits on the field, rather than tallies of bank accounts off the diamond, as we have ...

A Wonderful Read
This book is fantastic, especially for someone who understands football. It is technical regarding football, but the story, which is true, develops beautifully. I couldn't put this book down, and I absolutely fell in love with the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves great books and great football.

The Games We Played
I was stationed in the Berlin Brigade from 1978-79. I especially enjoyed this book. It is well written, authentic, and provides the reader a view of life in the Berlin Brigade and in East Berlin that would otherwise be unknown. I strongly recommend this book!

Wonderful Reading
This book is a clear window onto a time that, for most of us, is hard to imagine. It relates the real history of regular people in their own words. I have found it very difficult to take a break from reading it. In particular, I would have liked to learn more about Mary Mooneyham Dixon who was sent, in 1931 at the age of six, from her home on Huger Street in Columbia, SC to the South ...

Traditional sports and life in prison
We Only Played Home Games: Wacky, Raunchy, Humorous Stories Of Sports And Other Events In Michigan's Maximum Security Prison by Leonard "Oakie" Brumm is not a book for the faint-hearted. We Only Played Home Games is replete with sometimes disturbing, sometimes darkly humorous, sometimes outrageous anecdotes, about a warden who used team sports to sublimate inmate dissention - or in other words, ...

Great stories, great baseball and lots of history!
This book may be the most interesting and most painstakingly researched minor league history ever published. Mr. Gaunt has captured the spirit of baseball in the towns of Eastern North Carolina and the important role the game played in the lives of fans there. This book covers the league history from it's inception in 1934 as a semi-pro league for college players to its entry into true ...

A Truly Great History!
Danny Peary has compiled an oral history that is simply as good an effort as has been done to date. The sixty-five players interviewed range from a few stars like Brooks Robinson, Del Ennis, Lew Burdette and Don Newcombe to solid career players such as Hank Sauer, Andy Seminick, Eddie Joost and Gene Woodling to guys just trying to hang on like Coot Veal, Ed Bouchee, Al Kozar and Bob Cain. ...

The Inner child
I loved this book. Like many of the contributors to this excellent anthology I played ball games; stood on street corners with a 'gang'and generally tried to mix in. But I had glasses from the age of 6, too much reading under the blankets with a torch so the rougher games were out for me. One pair of spectacles and it had to last! With this in mind, I eagerly read, nay devoured Glen Roven's ...
