The Rise of Evangelicalism: The Age of Edwards, Whitefield, and the Wesleys (History of Evangelicalism)4 reviews
Mark A. Noll

InterVarsity Press, 2004

You will be glad you read it
I am a scientist with an interest in church history, not a professional historian. But in my limited view, this is an important book. Covering the period of 1740 to 1795, it is the first of a five volume series edited by Noll on the history of evangelicalism. It appears to be a scholarly treatment of a topic of which I knew relatively little. I knew something about Edwards, Whitefield, ...

George Whitefield: The Life and Times of the Great Evangelist of the Eighteenth Century - Volume II9 reviews
Arnold A. Dallimore

Banner of Truth, 1980

George Whitefield: An Anointed Ministry, An Impassioned Heart
Well, I finally saved up the money and sprung for this two-volume full-length account of the life of George Whitefield. I had whetted my appetite on the abbreviated volume "George Whitefield: God's Anointed Servant in the Great Revival of the Eighteenth Century" by the same author. I can honestly say this is one of the best investments I've ever made. Reading the life of such a great saint--this ...

George Whitefield's Journals4 reviews
George Whitefield

Banner of Truth, 1986

Fascinating journal of a great man of God
I wish more great Christians had kept journals. Reading about someone's struggles in a biography sometimes seems a little too broad; lots of emotion is distilled down to a few pages. Reading about the day-by day-successes and failures of great Christians is much more realistic, far easier to apply in my own walk with God. This is the four-year journal of George Whitefield, considered one of ...

Cry Freedom (Winds of Freedom, Book 1)7 reviews
Marlo Schalesky

Crossway Books, 2000

Prepare To Step Back In Time
Schalesky writes with such powerful prose that the reader not only believes the story, we are swept back in time to the early 1700's to experience it. What is the cry for freedom in a land that we today take for granted? What is the cry for freedom that every person feels within their life on a spiritual level? Schalesky weaves these questions into a story of historical accuracy and with ...

The Vision That Changed A Nation: The Legacy of William Tennent2 reviews
John F. Hansen

MorningStar Publications Inc., 2007

William Tennent , What An Inspiration!!!!
In this inspiring book author, John Hansen, chronicles the struggles that the Rev. William Tennent faced when trying to live out the call of God on his life. He pastored a Presbyterian congregation in Bucks County, PA and built a log cabin school for the training of ministers. Tennent knew what it was like to face rejection and criticism. His colleagues laughed and scoffed at his "Log College." ...

Hurlbut's Story of the Bible7 reviews
Jesse Lyman Hurlbut

Blackstone Audiobooks, 1996

Best Comprehensive Bible "story book" I've Ever Read
Hurlbut's Story of the Bible was the first and best comprehensive "Bible story book" I read and re-read. As an adult it remains my favorite and now I am sharing it with my own children. Hurlbut's tells all the stories you remember from Sunday School as well as many that you may not know. It explains with clear and exciting language that is simple enough for children but also interesting ...

The Earth Care Manual: A Permaculture Handbook For Britain & Other Temperate Climates2 reviews
Patrick Whitefield

Permanent Publications, 2005

Great textbook on Permaculture
I've only had a chance to glance through this and read snippets, but I'm very impressed. A lot of information well organized; it's like a textbook for a college level Permaculture course. Seems comparable to, but easier to understand and apply, than Mollison's Permaculture Design Manual. I'm in the PNW US but I think this book will be very useful here. Only compliant is the ...

Reading Genesis One2 reviews
Rodney Whitefield

R. Whitefield Publisher, 2003

A Unique Approach to a Hot Debate!
I find it sad that most people, including most Christians, seem to believe that the Bible was written in King James English. Too much time is spent arguing over the nuances of words in the English text when so many nuances have been lost or changed in the not so simple process of translating the text from the original Hebrew or Greek. We too often coerce the text to say more than it says and in ...

God's Anointed Servant Indeed!
This book is a 224 page condensation of the much longer, two-volume "George Whitefield: The Life and Times of the Great Evangelist of the Eighteenth-Century Revival". I purchased this shorter volume for our church library and am already saving up the $66 to purchase the longer work for my private library. I eagerly anticipate obtaining Dallimore's more exhaustive look at the life of this great ...

George Whitefield and the Great Awakening1 review
John Pollock

Hodder & Stoughton Ltd, 1973

Essential biography
George Whitefield, like so many of us, exhibited a slow progression towards mature Christian faith. That our heroes were imperfect (save for the Lord himself) is an encouragement to us all. In this smart little biography we meet a number of other giants involved in the Great Awakening. The Wesleys appear at various times, in latter stages clashing with Whitefield over predestination. ...

Mere Christianity1 review
C. S. Lewis

Blackstone Audiobooks, 2006

Audio Pleasure
We all know that C.S.Lewis wrote the incredible Mere Christianity as a follow-on to his radio talks during the War, but what an unexpected pleasure to listen to his thoughts by these two articulate narrators on this CD set (M.C. plus Abolition of Man). Great job!

The great awakening ;: A history of the revival of religion in the time of Edwards and Whitefield1 review
Joseph Tracy

Boston, Congregational Board of Publication, 1857

Excellent retelling of the Great Awakening
I have read a number of works on revivals and this revival in particular. This is the one book on the subject that I have gone back to time and again. It is both scholarly thorough and devotionally helpful. As I read of the changes in the lives in the villagers of New England I became more and more impressed with how true revivals are such awesome and precious things. This book is very helpful ...

The face changers: A Jane Whitefield novel29 reviews
Thomas Perry

Ballantine Pub. Group, 1999

Jane Whitefield is Back on the Job
Native American (she's part Seneca) Jane Whitefield has stopped guiding people in danger to safe locations because of a promise she made her new husband Dr. Carey McKinnon. She'd spent the better part of a decade helping those in danger disappear and take on new lives, getting them new papers and teaching them how to stay hidden, now she's finished with that. Or is she? Now it's her husband of ...

Select Sermons of George Whitefield1 review
George Whitefield

Banner of Truth, 1958

Review of Select Sermons of George Whitefield
These sermons shed great light on the "Good ole preachers of yester year." When you've finished this book you will understand why so many were converted during this era. I'm impressed by the way this Servant of God preaches. He cuts right to the heart of the matter and brings your heart into the matter! You'll see shades of Spurgeon in his sermons. Very effective!

George Whitefields's Journals1 review
George Whitefield

Sovereign Grace Publishers Inc., 2000

Awesome eyewitness Account of the Great Awakening!
This book is absolutely priceless on several levels. First of all, we have Whitefield's daily journals covering the prime years of his life and the ones that go right the heart of the Great Awakening, the series of transatlantic revivals that took place from 1735-1745. You read of the powerful movings of the Spirit through his preaching, the tremendous response of the multitudes, and the ...

"Pedlar in Divinity"1 review
Frank Lambert

Princeton University Press, 1993

Lambert Illuminates Whitefield's Enterprise
Frank Lambert's book Pedlar in Divinity: George Whitefield and the Transatlantic Revivals, constitutes an extensive inquiry into how Whitefield "and his associates organized, publicized, and funded the revivals" of the Great Awakening (p. 7). Lambert wants to learn "how Whitefield exploited demand for 'experimental religion,'" which he defined as a faith expressed in a "conversion experience" ...

Dining with Delphina1 review
Delphina

Whitefield Books, 1987

mystery vegetarian cookbook, very good
I found this book on a remainder table a few years ago. The author is very mysterious, no last name, no other personal information in the book, no photograph, no bio, no cover blurb. But the recipes are wonderful, the author is evidently a vegetarian cook familiar with a wide variety of cooking styles. Just reading the recipes makes me crave to eat them. I wish I knew more about the author.
