Bitter is the New Black : Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass,Or, Why You ...322 reviews
Jen Lancaster

NAL Trade, 2006

Just finished it and LOVED IT!!!!
While I was reading this book, I kept thinking to myself, 'Is this really a nonfiction book?' I couldn't believe all the things Jen Lancaster had to go through to be where she is now. It was very sad how she struggled to get a job but at the same time, it was entertaining b/c of her sarcastic humor and the way she handled things. I am definitely going to go buy her other books! :)

Nothing Like It In the World : The Men Who Built the Transcontinental Railroad 1863-1869215 reviews
Stephen E. Ambrose

Simon & Schuster, 2001

Nothing Like it in All the World
I really enjoyed this book. It is well written and if you are in interested in American History it gives you insight into the period of history surrounding the building of these two powerful railroads. It also gives you an inside look at the dealings and graft that went into the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. I would recommend this book and actually already have.

This book again is outstanding. You must read the first book to understand the rest of the books. It is wonderful how Donna VanLiere brings the stories together. She is one talented writer.

American Savior: A Novel of Divine Politics56 reviews
Roland Merullo

Algonquin Books, 2008

Well-written, thought-provoking
Have you ever wondered what it must have been like for the disciples, spending quality time with Jesus, having meals together and getting to know Him? What was He really like, and what would He be like today if He were here, sitting at the next table? American Savior is a novel that explores these questions and provides a view of Jesus that breaks free of the stereotypical representations of Him ...

The Daily Fix: Your Guide to Healthy Habits for Good Nutrition (Women's Health (Rodale))3 reviews
Alexa L Fishback

Rodale Books, 2008

Makes Sense!
This book isn't necessarily anything new, but somehow it's very approachable, easy to read and inspiring. I recommend to anyone who is looking for a sensible way to live for the rest of your life.

Iran Awakening: One Woman's Journey to Reclaim Her Life and Country7 reviews
Shirin Ebadi, Azadeh Moaveni

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2007

Best book you might ever read
This is the best and the most honest version of the modern history of my country from the eyes of a brave educated woman who is not afraid to fight for what every one else is afraid to whisper. In her memoir, she does not leave out any detail of the atmosphere governing Iran. Living in the circumstances she describes in the book, I genuinely respect her for who she is. She is an icon every woman ...

Days In The Lives Of Social Workers: 54 Professionals Tell "Real-life" Stories From Social Work Practice13 reviews

White Hat Communications, 2004

Very Inspiring and Insightful!
When I decided to buy this book it was becaus I was already thinking of a career in social work. And, I must say that the book is very inspiring and insightful. The stories come from different types of social workers, in different fields, under different circumstances, and really gives the reader a sense of what each worker goes through on a typical day. It's also very true to the field. ...

The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr48 reviews
Martin Luther King Jr., Clayborne Carson

Grand Central Publishing, 2001

Required reading!
Martin Luther King, Jr., is without a doubt one of the most influential and pivotal figures in twentieth-century history. In addition to his work as a Civil Rights leader, his role as a father and pastor, he also was an extensively published writer. However, he never had the chance to write an autobiography in the traditional sense. We as readers in the present day and the future have lost the ...

Global Woman: Nannies, Maids, and Sex Workers in the New Economy4 reviews

Holt Paperbacks, 2004

Fact-filled, careful study
In brief essays, the authors present generally unbiased academic discussions of the globalization of female workers. Though hardly a new phenomenon, it has dramatically increased in the last 50 years and is a topic that is deserving of this type of examination. The topics are clearly delineated between domestic workers, cheap labor and the sex trade - however, there are unfortunates whose ...

Cloudstreet : A Novel32 reviews
Tim Winton

Scribner, 2002

Amazing.
This is my first review on amazon.com. Why this book, why now? Because THIS is the book I can't stop telling people about. THIS is the kind of novel I always look for but don't often find. I can't believe that I had never heard of Winton, nor of this book, until recently. I can't add much to the well-written reviews above, except to agree with those who consider this book a classic.

Where am I Wearing: A Global Tour to the Countries, Factories, and People that Make Our Clothes9 reviews
Kelsey Timmerman

Wiley, 2008

Excellent Reading
This book was written very well with a bit of humor. This book allows us an insight into the countries and the actual people that make our clothing. The author allows us the opportunity to get to know a little about these people and their families. We normally do not think about things like that whenever we are out shopping for new clothes, but after reading this book, it has that affect on ...

Rivethead: Tales from the Assembly Line45 reviews
Ben Hamper

Grand Central Publishing, 1992

Hilarious story of a dying breed
I grew up with people like Ben Hamper in a place which was much like Flint. For the first couple years of my adult life, I did the kind of work he did. What he describes is the tail end of a lifestyle; the lifestyle of the shop rat. It's dirty, monotonous and smelly. Many of the people you work with are either below average in intelligence or in sanity. Drugs, booze and having no concept of ...

Martin's Big Words: The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.19 reviews
Doreen Rappaport

Hyperion Book CH, 2007

Awesome Book!
I was first introduce to this book in an undergraduate elementary education course. I purchased it instantly. I have used it with Kindergarten, second grade, third grade, and fourth grade. All the children love it! The illustrations are very unique and colorful. The story is on a level they can understand. It is not bogged down with too many details and is not to lengthy. I highly recommend ...

The Kid's Guide to Service Projects: Over 500 Service Ideas for Young People Who Want to Make a Difference ...6 reviews
Barbara A. Lewis

Free Spirit Publishing, 1995

Wonderful project ideas!
This book was very helpful to me as I explained to my daughter about being a good person of service. The project ideas seem to relate well to the interest of kids and many can be done by the kids themselves. Other projects will require adult help. I think this book is very good. As we read through the book, my daughter had many questions, as well as suggestions and modifications for certain ...

The Children29 reviews
David Halberstam

Ballantine Books, 1999

An amazing work
David Halberstam has written so many great works, but THE CHILDREN may be his greatest achievement. From the outset, this book takes readers on a journey through the civil rights movement through the eyes of both the courageous young people who had decided that our society had to change and the adults who helped them to bring this needed change to America. The book captures readers from the ...

America Is in the Heart: A Personal History (Washington Paperbacks, Wp-68)18 reviews
Carlos Bulosan

University of Washington Press, 1974

A beautifully-told tale of tragedy....
I first read AMERICA IS IN THE HEART as a young teenager in high school. Writer Carlos Bulosan goes the semi-autobiographical route to re-examine some of the most painful memories of his life, starting as a youth in the Philippines up to his last days on the West Coast of the United States. Carlos Bulosan, born on November 24, 1913 in Pangasinan, Philippines, came from a very poor background. ...

The Three Laws of Performance: Rewriting the Future of Your Organization and Your Life (J-B Warren Bennis ...
Steve Zaffron, Dave Logan

Jossey-Bass, 2009

When a hurricane warning is announced, everyone's concerns and actions become focused on that expectation; the hurricane essentially becomes the future which people are "living into." Similarly, when an organization needs to transform or make the leap to a higher level, everyone involved should be "living into" the vision of the organization's new, improved future. But in the majority of organizations, the future people are living into is based ...
