The Red Army of the Great Patriotic War 1941-45 (Men-at-Arms)4 reviews
Steven Zaloga

Osprey Publishing, 1989

An Excellent Thumbnail Review of the Subject for Hobbyists
Zaloga's contribution to Osprey's series is extremely well-done. And though this work is just under 50 pages, it packs in enough details for World War II scale modelers, computer game players, and novices of modern military history to get the answers to many basic and advanced questions about the Soviet military of the Second World War. Since this 1989 release, there have been many other works ...

Men at Arms (Sword of honour)13 reviews
Evelyn Waugh

Back Bay Books, 1979

frankness makes it special
When Waugh wrote this trilogy, between 1951 and 1964, people loved the acerbity of his writing. But they found Crouchback and his views perverse. In those days, the thought that the Second World War might have been an error which left the world worse than it found it was almost unthinkable. There had been frightful blunders such as Singapore, admitted the ...

The Polish Army 1939-1945 (Men at Arms Series, 117)3 reviews
Steven Zaloga

Osprey Publishing, 1982

Overview of various Polish armies of 1939-45
"The Polish Army 1939-45" by Steven J. Zaloga is a concise overview of the uniforms, equipment, and history of Polish armies during WWII. The book has eight full-page color illustrations by Richard Hook, which the author also discusses and explains. This volume is filled with black and white photos, includes a map, and has illustrations of rank and divisional insignia. The book is worth ...

The Russo-Japanese War 1904-05 (Men-at-Arms)6 reviews
Alexei Ivanov

Osprey Publishing, 2004

Balanced overview of the Armies
One of the best Osprey books to come along. It is the perfect, compact introduction to all aspects of the land armies. Unlike some Osprey titles which focus on one area, usually uniforms, the authors have covered everything from weapons and tactics to organization. The photographs here are excellent and I rank the color plates as among the best to appear in this series.

The Sarmatians 600 BC-AD 450 (Men-at-Arms)3 reviews
Richard Brzezinski

Osprey Publishing, 2002

An excellent introduction and overview of Sarmatians
"The Sarmatians 600 BC - AD 450" by Richard Brzezinski and Mariusz Mielczarek is an excellent resource about Sarmatians. The book lives up to the typical Osprey "Men-at-Arms" series standards; it provides a brief overview, along with many photographs of paintings and sculptures, and contains color plates depicting various scenes. The book is great as it draws from many accounts of ancient texts ...

The Royal Hungarian Army in World War II (Men-at-Arms)2 reviews
Nigel Thomas, Laszlo Szabo

Osprey Publishing, 2008

A good start on an important subject
The Axis eastern satellites have received very little, mostly negative coverage in the classic accounts of World War 2. Generally their war efforts are footnotes or used as the excuse for German failure and Soviet success. These armies fought long and hard with very inferior equipment, armor and anti-tank guns in particular, against formidable odds. This short treatment of the Hungarians is very ...

The German Army 1939-45 (2) : North Africa & Balkans (Men-At-Arms Series, 316)6 reviews
Nigel Thomas

Osprey Publishing, 1998

Quite Interesting Study of an Interesting Force
This work is a splendid example of the new emphasis of the publisher on producing comprehensive works in a handy cheap format compared with the earlier broad brush treatments which covered too much in too little detail. The new emphasis is on sets covering various national armed forces in as much detail as is available, consistent with the current purpose of the works in the series, which have ...

A World at Arms: A Global History of World War II, New Edition60 reviews
Gerhard L. Weinberg

Cambridge University Press, 2005

Global War
I had the opportunity to see Gerhard L. Weinberg give a talk on this book and it was a study of a master at work. He was pushing a controversial interpretation and was answering skeptical questions directly with an ease of a man who knew his subject like the back of his hand. I was intrigued, bought a copy, got him to sign it, and read the book eagerly. I was not disappointed. Weinberg does ...

The Arms of Krupp: The Rise and Fall of the Industrial Dynasty that Armed Germany at War18 reviews
William Manchester

Back Bay Books, 2003

Krupp: the Epitome of the Military-Industrial Complex.
William Manchester's "The Arms of Krupp" is an epic look at the company, personalities, dynasty, and the nation that formed one of the world's most infamous armaments manufacturers. From the earliest records of a Krupp in the late 16th century, the Krupp family profited off the suffering an misery of others when Arndt Krupp bought land in Essen for a bargain following an outbreak of bubonic ...

Scythians 700-300 B.C. (Men at Arms Series, 137)8 reviews
E.V. Cernenko

Osprey Publishing, 1983

Nomadic warriors
I own this book, and have found it useful in designing loose-fit ting, comfortable nomadic, Scythian-style garments. If one takes the time to carefully examine the pictures, reconstuction pictures, etc., one could use them to reconstruct either arms or clothing, as a living history study. Keep in mind, they traded actively with the Greeks, and from the other end of the Silk Ro- ad, China, and ...

Rome's Enemies (2): Gallic and British Celts (Men-at-Arms)6 reviews
Peter Wilcox

Osprey Publishing, 1985

Great book but the picture of the bezerker should let it all hang out!!
the amount of scholarship enclosed in these little more than pamphlet simply amazes. there is always some archaeological digs in these books usually showing a chief or warriors burial with artwork.lots of pictures and good explanations of them and good maps considering that in 200 BC the technology of accurate mapmaking was (not there)!! I think isaw a few of these costumed bezerkers in the movie ...

Roman Army from Caesar to Trajan (Men at Arms Series 46)5 reviews
Michael Simkins

Osprey Publishing, 1984

Excellent book for starting your research!
This book has been around since the mid-1980's. It is well worth adding to your library of Roman Military books! The color drawings are not as fancy as the new style Osprey, but they show the details of Uniforms and equipments. The photographs and line drawings are excellent and make this well worth adding. Modern gladius copies use these sketches as the pattern for the decorations on ...

Armies of the Carthaginian Wars 265-146 BC (Men at Arms Series, 121)4 reviews
Terence Wise

Osprey Publishing, 1982

Punic Wars
This book first examines the origins, society, and army organization of Carthage, and then goes on to profile her armies and those of her allies, Spaniards, Gauls, Italians, Africans, and Greco-Macedonians. The second half of the book tells of the contemporary Roman armies, which finally succeeded in destroying Carthage in 146 BC. Fine artwork portraying a Roman horseman fighting a Numidian, a ...

German Medieval Armies 1300-1500 (Men-at-Arms)3 reviews
Christopher Gravett

Osprey Publishing, 1985

Knechts und knaves
The usual good basic coverage by Osprey, covering the Holy Roman Empire. Wars were frequent, between principates, towns and cities, leagues, robber barons, religious groups. It's no wonder that Germany would be the site of some of the bloodiest campaigns during the later Thirty Years' War. There is also an excellent section on the Hussites and their unique method of fighting the Empire. There is ...

Medieval Russian Armies 1250 - 1500 (Men-At-Arms)3 reviews
David Nicolle

Osprey Publishing, 2002

the best in east and west
A very interesting book: the text is well written and the colour plates are superb. I must confess that I'm a big fan of David Nicolle and Angus McBride: they combine in their work two of my greatest passions: military history and illustration. As such my opinion can be biased but I will try to be as impartial as possible. This book is one of my favourite and I will try to tell why. After a ...

German Army Elite Units 1939-45 (Men-at-Arms)5 reviews
Gordon Williamson

Osprey Publishing, 2002

A great little book on a often forgotten subject.
Gordon Williamson, an expert on the armed forces and paramilitaries (SA/SS) of the Third Reich, has written a good introduction to the elite forces of the Werhmacht. He covers such units as the Brandenburgers and the Grossdeuscthland divisions. I particularly enjoyed the illustrations of Mr. Bujeiro and the many photos that are spread throught the book. Although I admit this book could have had ...

The Moors: The Islamic West 7th-15th Centuries AD (Men-at-Arms)2 reviews
David Nicolle

Osprey Publishing, 2001

Typical Osprey book
The usual Osprey coverage combining McBride's beautiful artwork with Nicolle's knowledge of medieval Islamic warfare. A great introduction to the political and military history, and a detailed source on the arms and armor, of the African and Arab warriors who held much of Spain for seven centuries.

Armies in East Africa 1914-18 (Men-at-Arms)3 reviews
Peter Abbott

Osprey Publishing, 2002

The First Desert Fox
Well-done book. I have not seen a bad Osprey book yet. This book outlines the uniforms, equipment and OOB's as well as the history of the Great War in East Africa. Paul Von-lettow Vorbeck was able to outsmart and outmarch the allies (Britain, Belgium and Portugal).

Mongols (Men-At-Arms Series, 105)8 reviews
Stephen Turnbull

Osprey Publishing, 1980

Good one
It's a fine book for the people who are beginners in Mongolian history field. Recommended. Only thing that's missing on Mongols' subject in Osprey books is that they don't have anything from original Mongolian sources (Osprey books use either Chinese, Russian, or Arabic sources mostly)! But as I said before this book is good for beginners and you won't be dissatisfied.
