Superb! I am a programmer by day and a writer of articles on programming at other times. Growing up in England I was taught every miniscule detail of the English language. How to construct sentences and how pronunciation changes depending on word stems, Country of origin and so on. I had a pretty good grasp on writing. At work I spend some of my time re-writing briefing notes, user manuals, ...

Based on our students' reviews
I give this book as a gift to each of my new PhD students because my experience is that the students simply don't understand the process. I came upon it a couple years ago, and the feedback from the students has been overwhelmingly positive. I haven't personally read it, but the students (who, after all, are the ones it is aimed at), recommend it highly.

First rate
Zinsser weaves "how to" tips and discussion into his own memoirs. His section on cutting a broad project (write about baseball) down to manageable size (Pirates in spring training) is excellent for its step-by-step thinking process. He offers equally good thinking on many other things that can cause perplexion.

Neatly condensed into a simple, easy to maneuver `work book'; this "Guide To Writing an Autobiography" is a real find. Great book on writing better!
If you find that my review is poorly written, put the blame on me and not Mr Provost and you could see the reasons why I have read this book. Mr Provost filled the book with examples that are easy to understand and he had styled the book in a reader friendly and comprehensive format. You could read the book from page 1 to the end and undergo the systematic built up to better writing or you ...

This seven-novel writer's bible for getting off the dime
Metzger does the best job I've seen on jump-starting your creativity, and tying your writing into archetypes. There's lots for the reader who wants to think of writing as a spiritual exercise. BUT for me, by far, its great gift is pragmatic. Between books, or when I feel stuck, or at the beginning of a revision, I take out "On Story" and work through all her suggestions as if it were the first ...

Third in a Fantastic Trio by Fletcher
Ralph Fletcher has written a trio of fantastic books for young writers. "A Writer's Notebook" is about gathering material; "How Writers Work" is about the process of writing; and "Live Writing" is about craft, or how to write well. Most importantly, these three books are written directly to kids, in a warm and personal rather than "textbook" manner. I don't know of any other author who writes ...

This book is for aspiring writers not for professional writers. This is an important point, because other reviewers have said this book gives too basic advice. Basic, but paramount. The basic idea behind this book is that many authors suffer from a terrible affliction. He calls it "the writer's inferiority complex" It results from an overadulation of the published word.
