Private Yankee Doodle: Being a Narrative of Some of the Adventures, Dangers, and Sufferings of a ...9 reviews
Joseph Plumb Martin

Ayer Company Publishers, 1962

Meet A Man Who Made "US" Possible
Private Yankee Doodle, the diary of Joseph Plumb Martin, is an excellent account of the Revolutionary War told from the soldier's view. Martin campaigned almost continuously from the beginning of the War through Yorktown (with the exception of the first winter after his initial three month service). He lived much of what have become the hallowed tales of our epic struggle for nationhood. He was ...

The Real Yankee Doodle: A Story of the Chapin Family1 review
Lillian M. Henry

1st Books Library, 2003

A Wonderful Book
This is a wonderful book. Mrs Henry's characters are alive and believable. Her ability to describe the environment and to give the details of daily life and family relationships in Revolutionary War America are equal to the best established writers. I found myself engaged with the characters. I really cared about them. I worried for their safety, cried over their troubles and am eagerly waiting ...

Yankee Doodle Boy: A Young Soldier's Adventures in the American Revolution Told by Himself5 reviews
Joseph Plumb Martin

Holiday House, 1995

I think I may have been there!
After reading this book, I know that the best way to learn about something is to get the viewpoint from someone who experienced it. Joseph Plumb Martin was a great writer, and told me what it was like to be an average soldier in Washington's army. He writes in a style that's easy to understand, even for a 7th grader like me, and he has a very good sense of humor. By the time I finished "Yankee ...

Yankee Doodle (Patriotic Songs)1 review
Marsha Qualey

Picture Window Books, 2003

Yankee Doodle is Dandy
My second grade class sings a patriotic song each morning. We added Yankee Doodle to our list, and enjoy turning the pages of this picture book as we sing. The students particularly liked the folk-style illustrations, which include a man and woman dressed in period-style clothing and their cat. The people and cat change places on different pages through-out the story, charming the readers. ...

Yankee Doodle (Sing-Along Stories)1 review
Mary Ann Hoberman

Little, Brown Young Readers, 2004

Just Plain Fun
We got this book for our 3yo while he was hospitalized and have taken turns singing it and it's just plain fun. The art is cute, the wording is easily singable and funny and the book as a whole is entertaining. We'll be reading this one a lot and looking for the others in the series!

Yankee Doodle Dead (Death on Demand Mysteries)22 reviews
Carolyn Hart

Avon, 1999

A Great Mystery.....with a great bookstore setting!
After just picking up the book and starting to read (not knowing about the series) I was quite suprised. The story was almost like a Nancy Drew mystery in a way. The characters each had their own little quirks and were likeable in their own ways. I fell in love with Death on Demand Bookstore (something I would love to have being a seller myself). This isn't a series for the serious mystery reader ...

Private Yankee Doodle: Dangers and Sufferings of a Revolutionary Soldier1 review

Eastern Acorn Press, 1962

Excellent diary for the time.
This book is like a time-capsule slash diary of the revolutionary war. A wonderful true-story recollection of what it was to be a solider in the Revolutionary War. It's great to hear it right from the soldier's mouth. Rare to find, but wonderful to read, and certainly the most interesting text I've ever encountered which covers the revolutionary war. READ THIS NOW!

Yankee Doodle2 reviews

Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, 1996

A delightful depiction of the familiar song
Our six-year-old son loved Yankee Doodle so much that he brought it home from the school library two weeks in a row. He was fascinated by the pictures, and he enjoyed telling us his own interpretation of the story. After reading (and singing) the book together for several nights in a row, his reading improved noticeably. Not surprisingly, he begged us to get him his own copy.
