How the Music Evolved
Barry Miles' biography of Paul McCartney (Many Years from Now) is distinctive from other Beatles's biographies for its detailed look at how all that iconic music came together. As one example, McCartney gives an insider's view of where he was and what he was doing when he composed "Here, There, and Everywhere," as well as the off hand remark that playing one particular chord led to "Fool on the ...

Novel ideas for novel teachers
"Life on the Tenure Track" is a refreshingly funny look at the life of a new teacher. Being a new teacher myself, I could easily relate to Lang's story and I think I have been in a lot of the same situations he has faced. While reading this book, I looked back at my own classroom experiences, laughed, and realized, as Lang does in the book, that life goes on. "Life on the Tenure Track" may be ...

A heart Warming Story
This book is so interesting because it tells of so many baseball stars and you seem to know them on a personal basis. This lady was such a talented story teller and artist. Her sketches were absolutely marvelous. It's amazing that this secret was kept for so many years. I was fascinated from the beginning to the end of the book. How nice it was to learn what a gentleman Hank Greenberg was and ...

These books are not required reading!
As have many of the reviewers here, I've read all of Jan Karon's books. I find them to be comforting, soothing, safe cozy books to read. Sometimes, when life is truly stressful and anxious, that is exactly what I want. I draw a hot bath and read about a kind gentle world where nothing bad ever happens without a solution. People die when they're old, people give up their addictions, people ...

Brilliantly imaginative....
Michael Hart's brilliant imagination takes the reader on a tour de force of history from the great religious, political and scientific leaders of the past to the imagined ones of the future. See how Jesus, Moses, and Mohammed compare with Hitler, Stalin and those yet to come in influence (whether good or bad, history is the judge). Or Newton, Darwin, and Einstein, with the biotechnologists of ...

Yes. The second collection of John Cage's writings to appear (after Silence), A year From Monday is indispensable to anyone wishing to have more than a passing understanding of Cage's work and thought. In usual Cage fashion, the lectures, essays, "diaries," anecdotes, and assorted miscellanea jump off the page - utilizing an increasingly diverse array of typefaces and sizes, the writings ...
Voices from the Dark Years: The Truth About Occupied France 1940-1945
Douglas Boyd
The History Press
, 2007
What was life really like in German-occupied France during the Second World War? Douglas Boyd paints the clearest picture yet, using hitherto unpublished first-person accounts of ordinary men and women who lived through this extraordinary and dangerous time, when a few made fortunes, but most went cold and hungry. Less than 1 per cent of the French was pro-German. Is it pure coincidence that the same percentage actively resisted the Germans ...

Ok, for all those of you out there who always wanted to learn the math that you need to know to be able to do some really fun physics, THIS IS IT! The most helpful book for a high school launching parent
This was an extremely helpful book. Two other launching moms and I had a support group where we read and discussed the incidents in our senior daughters lives and the material in the book. It made me feel less like a failure and more like a great mom. Very uplifting, humorous and helpful. I am giving a copy to our college counselor at the high school to recommend for parents. Great read.

A very good resource for courses on the European exploration and exploitation of the Western Hemisphere
The European exploration of the rest of the world did not begin in 1492, although that is the impression given to grade school children. In a time when there were few ways to preserve food, Europeans had an almost insatiable demand for spices. Not only did the spices preserve the food; they made it possible to eat it when it was spoiled. When the Turks conquered the Arabian Peninsula, they cut ...
