Maggie's Music, 2003

Fantastic!
I first heard the "Colonial America" CD by Hesperus when I visited Monticello recently (the home of Thomas Jefferson) where they were playing the songs in the gift shop. Imagine my dismay to find that only one cassette tape was left of the fabulous music of Hesperus; however, that tape held me spell-bound all the way home, from Virginia to North Carolina. It was an incredible journey from the ...

Mountain Tracks, Vol. 52 reviews
Yonder Mountain String Band

Frog Pad, 2008

yonder greatness
This is my 3rd Yonder album. Possibly my favorite. I have two live tracks, this and the third. Both are amazing but i believe i am enjoying this cd more because of the wide range of cover songs as well as their own music. I would recommend this cd to any bluegrass fan or anyone looking for some awesome music.

People Take Warning! Murder Ballads & Disaster Songs 1913-193810 reviews
Various Artists

Tompkins Square, 2007

Brilliant & Creative Historical Collection
On a recommendation from a friend, I picked this up even though I only own the Harry Smith Anthology and really no other reissue collections. I'm now sold! This is at least on the same level as the Harry Smith collection if not much better. This set is a thoughtfully constructed, almost visionary collection of pre-1938 recordings, with each one of the recordings demonstrating something lost ...

Sony, 2001

Exquisitely good music!
Didn't expect an outstanding cd, don't know exactly why i got it,maybe because of yo yo and bela, but every piece is played beautifully, even the vocal piece by James Taylor. The album is almost too good to be called Heartland, every piece is a class act. Bravo!

Sony, 1997

Definitive Recordings of Copland's Popular Ballet Scores From Bernstein, NYPO
Without question, this splendid CD is my favorite recording of some of Aaron Copland's most popular orchestral ballet scores. In Leonard Bernstein he had both a good friend and a devout ally, who successfully championed Copland's music, helping to ensure his reputation as one of the greatest - if not the greatest - 20th Century American composer. Sony has done a superb job in digitally ...

Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, ...

Sony, 1990

Long-Time Favorite
When I was in the fifth grade, there was a district-wide competition called music memory, and one of the pieces I had to memorize for the competition was the last movement of Appalachian Spring. And I fell in love with that song. I went and bought the cassette of Appalachian Spring with Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic, and I listened to it almost every night before going to sleep. ...

Aaron Copland, Louis Lane, ...

Telarc, 1990

A strong version of Copland 's work
This CD contains three of Aaron Copland's more popular works: "Fanfare for the Common Man"; "Rodeo," and "Appalachian Spring." Louis Lane conducts the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and they play Copland's works well. A few brief comments about each. "Fanfare for the Common Man" is one of my favorite fanfares. The name alone biases me in its favor. But the cadence is wonderful, beginning with ...

Brings Back Memories to the Old (and Young)!
'Good For What Ails You' is a great set of cd's with old songs that were sung at old medicine shows. I remember some of those songs from records and radio programs from my childhood - songs that I had totally forgotten! I lent the cd's to my father, and they brought back fond memories of his childhood in western OK when the medicine shows would come to town and set up on the square. Everyone ...

Recent Purchase that I'm Joyed to Find and Enjoy
Not until recently did I know about this guitar four. Hearing a number of their songs on internet classical radio, I decided I'd try this one. What a great surprise --- their arrangements of Copeland to Sousa to Praetorius are excellent and in taste. I'll be venturing into their other works.

Telarc, 1997

A Very Peaceful CD For These Very Troubled Times
This CD surprised me when I first listened to it. It is among the most beautiful and peaceful music I have ever listened to. The song, "Dear Father", written by Neil Diamond for the movie, Johnathan Livingston Seagull, is my absolute favorite on the entire CD. All songs on this CD are beautiful and it is a very good value for the money. It's nice to be surprised by a CD now and then. This album ...

Copland: The Music of America8 reviews
Aaron Copland, Erich Kunzel, ...

Telarc, 1997

The title says it all
Aaron Copland created classical music for about and by America. This extremely well performed and well selected album served as my true introduction to Copland's work. Vibrant, dramatic, passionate and utterly beautiful, this sampler of Copland's oevre really captivates the listener. I have lost many hours listening to "Quiet City" and "Appalacian Spring" two breathtakingly poetic pieces that ...

Three Aaron Copland Works: The New Gold Standard Recording
Aaron Copland is a composer who seems to flow in and out of favor with the critics but remains in the bloodstream of American audiences. This recording by Michael Tilson Thomas conducting the San Francisco Symphony offers three of Copland's most familiar masterpieces in performances that truly underline the genius that was Aaron Copland. Given that many conductors, not the least of which ...

Still a dream ...
This has long been my favorite classical guitar recording, and I just put it on again after hearing another recent favorite recording ("Reflections of Spain") played by David Russell, who is perhaps the most gifted contemporary guitarist on record. I was inspired to do so by Russell's performance of the "Cancion y Danza No. 1" by Antonio Ruiz-Pipo, which though quite excellent, I knew right away ...

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good ...

American Adagios6 reviews

Adagios may be slower pieces, but this CD is definitely not simple background music. The tenderness of the Gershwin "Lullaby" and Barber's haunting "Adagio" demand your attention. This is music that soars and takes the listener along.

Telarc, 2003

Awesome
Every once in a while, after sorting through the seemingly endless piles of contemporary American composers, you find a new composer that restores your faith in American music, which often seems to be a lost cause. This cd is one of those. Theofanidis comes forth as a brand new, amazingly talented composer whose music is simply breathtaking. Rainbow Body is a true masterpiece. Beginning in the ...

Just the thing for traditional strings ... without bling
Playing Time - 45:56 -- Who They Are: Riley Baugus is an excellent old-time banjo-player, fiddler and singer. To pay bills in his hometown of Walkertown, North Carolina, his "day jobs" include banjo builder, welder, and blacksmith. He's studied and been inspired by music of both old-timers (Tommy Jarrell, Roscoe Holcomb, Fred Cockerham) and young-timers too. Little Known Facts: Dirk Powell ...

Copland Conducts Copland2 reviews

Sony, 2003

The real gems here are the "Old American Songs"
There are few composers who capture the American spirit as much as Aaron Copland; Jewish; born in Brooklyn; educated to some extent in Paris; and gay-nobody brings alive the colors and sounds of the Old West and American country life quite like him. Indeed almost every soundtrack to an old Wetern movie is a re-write of "Rodeo" or "Billy the Kid" Suite. Copland's "Appalacian Spring" is an ...
