The CD was a gift for my Father who has limited mobility but still fully enjoys music. He loves the CD and we very much appreciated the timelyness of the shipment. Amazon.com is my first choice in on-line gifts. cj

Sublime
I'll add my praises of this disc to all the others. I fell totally in LOVE with Bossa Nova back in high school. I collected everything I could, from Best of Sergio Mendes - which is also very highly recommended to those who love this genre- to Joao Gilberto. In fact I made a trip to Brazil back in 1975 because I had to see this land where this sublime music came from. Anyway back to the disc. I ...

a classical-Latin music blend
Yo Yo Ma and his fellow musicians make beautiful music in this mellow adaptation of melodies that have their origin in Latin America. The opening track is a version of "Libertango", heard in the fabulous soundtrack of the film "The Tango Lesson", and one of the three compositions by Astor Piazzolla, in this concert that was recorded live at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in 2003. The group of ...

Obrigado Brazil
The tempos and sensuality of Brazilian music meshed with the artistry and joyous soul of Yo Yo Ma: a recipe for pleasure. I first listened to this on my car CD player and found myself wanting to pull over and get out and dance. The depth of Ma's cello adds just the right counterpoint to the rhythms and buoyancy of the samba and bossa nova. Enjoy!

Absolutely fabulous renditions of Jobim. Paula's voice is so pure and gentle, along with Jacques' cello gliding through the sketches. And the pianist Sakamoto is perfect as well. I just love this cd. I quickly obtained their other Jobim tribute cd "A Day in New York" (the Japanese enhanced version with 5 bonus tracks), which is even further proof that there is a musical heaven on earth. ...

My nephew mentioned his desire to hear some classical music (Yo-Yo Ma, especially) on the boring trips back & forth from college. He really seemed to enjoy receiving the CD for Christmas!

Uncommon Gems
The recording (I have the gold version) and performance are first rate. I also own her 'Amazonia' (which I like very much) and believe this is a superior performance. The selections are mostly laid-back with spare instrumentation....and oh...that chesky sound! Why don't more recording studios capture sound like this? These tunes have a different flair from the popular Jobim output....but they are ...

And the price is right, too.
This is an exquisitely beautiful album that captures the very essence of Brazil. Of all the solo guitar albums in my collection, this is the most expressive and poignant. The performance is masterful, intricate and sensitive. There is a wide mastery of inflection and style. Gerald Garcia is one of the true masters of solo guitar at any level much less Brazilian. (This album was recorded in ...

Mix of Classical and Bossa Nova styles
I have always enjoyed the interpretations of Daniel Baremboim from the time I first heard his recording of the Schubert impromptus when I was I teen-ager. In the mid 90's Baremboim started to record less traditional forms of Classical music (I least I consider it classical) such as the Tango. And what a wonderful result he has achieved. As a geographically logical next step, baremboim has made a ...

Lesser known guitarist wins me over
I got this disc on an impulse, trying to add to my slowly growing collection of classical guitar music. This is one impulse buy I do not regret! The selections are very mellow and relaxing, and they seem to mesh together well as if logically following one another. Graham Anthony Devine is truly "Devine" in my book. His technique is awe-inspiring, and his phrasing is subtle and precise. It's ...

The anniversary gala from Leipzig celebrating the 80th birthday of Kurt Masur
Kurt Masur was the principal conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra for 26 years. In the autumn of 1989, there were large demonstrations in Leipzig against the limitations of freedom imposed by the Deutsche Democratische Republik. Kurt Masur became involved as mediator, presenting his call for no violence to the government leaders and appealing to the public by radio not to use force. It ...

Lyrical and pure classical guitar
The classical guitar can struggle against the volume of an orchestra and that fact is evident in this CD. Isbin's masterful skill is often overwhelmed by the orchestra, something that perhaps could have been lessened with better remastering. Nonetheless, if you appreciate classical guitar played by a real talent, this CD is for you. The unaccompanied Latin Romances illustrate Isbin's work ...

great variety, a true virtuoso
David Burgess is one of those artists that is a total gem to find. He doesn't have a "big name" or a huge recording contract, but when it comes down to what matters (namely playing well) he can totally deliver the goods. Not only is he technically amazing (I've seen him in concert and he honestly didn't hit a single bad note), he plays with an incredible amount of soul. You can tell both on ...

skillful evocative solo guitar
this guy takes a 2-note berimbau riff and turns it into a few guitar chords - then he really launches it. this is a lesson in how to take a little nylon string guitar and, using only your fingers, make it sound HUGE. there is some singing in portuguese - i dont understand it but it isnt bad - but to a guitar player this is revolutionary stuff.

These guys are trombone studs!
Other players in my college trombone section kept recommending this CD to me, so I finally ordered it, and I'm very glad I finally listened to them. This is a must-have for the serious trombonist. After all, these are four of the not only best trombonists you'll hear, but best musicians also. "Achieved" is always a good one, along with the beautifully simple "Three Equali" and "Trois ...

Antonio Carlos Jobim Sinfonia Do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's EMI Odean Calvacade Of Stars.
Rio has a well kept secret. It rains. Lots! The rain is a reoccurring theme in Jobim's motifs. A silver lining behind every cloud. I feel there is a maritime theme as well, Rio's drifting tide stirs the Soul. I like Sinfonia Do Rio de Janeiro. A marvelous caliope of sight and sounds. Originally released as a 10" disc on the Continental Label in 1955, employing a full scale ...
