The Harmonious Harp6 reviews
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1990

A Beautiful Medley of Songs
I really enjoyed listening to this CD. It's very relaxing and soothing to the senses. The sound of the harp reminds me of heaven and all its angels. I simply adore all of the famous composers who contributed to this great treasure, especially Mozart. Usually, I love to listen to this CD while taking an afternoon nap or having a good cup of flavored coffee. So for the pleasure one recieves from ...

Andreas Greger, Janos Starker, ...

Philips, 1995

Mellow, Sleepy, Wonderful
I bought this CD for myself, a 60 year old. I have trouble sleeping and have been buying CDs by this company. They are all wonderful. I'm asleep in about 15 minutes!

Switched-On Boxed Set44 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederick Handel, ...

East Side Digital, 1999

A few thoughts on the SOBoxed....
I just happened upon this set of reviews on Amazon (although I had reviewed the original SOB separately years ago), and was delighted at the multitude of very favorable reviews by others. But then came the weeds amongst the fruit, namely those few reviews by people who just did not 'get it'. The Amazon 'editorial reviewer' should get an award for the most ignorant and condescending review ever ...

The Original Jacket Collection: Eugene Ormandy2 reviews
Mstislav Rostropovich, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, ...

Sony Classics, 2008

EUGENE ORMANDY FINALLY GETS HIS BOX SET!
It's hard to believe that the CD was introduced in 1982 and it has taken 26 years for Eugene Ormandy to have a proper box set released by Sony/BMG of some of his magical Columbia/CBS stereo recordings. How do you choose 10 CDs of Ormandy's Philadelphia Orchestra recordings to include in a box set? He was music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra from 1936 to 1980! His recordings ranged from ...

CPE Bach: Symphonies (Wq 182, 183); Cello Concertos (Wq 170-172) /Bylsma * OAE * Leonhardt4 reviews
Anner Bylsma, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, ...

Virgin Veritas, 2000

Reminiscent of Boccherini's Cello Concertos/Symphonies
The Virgin 'Veritas' label has released some excellent recordings (Vivaldi's Opus 3 and 9, for instance), and this double-disc issue of C.P.E's symphonies/cello concertos is no exception. [...] these discs sound absolutely fantastic! C.P.E. Bach, probably J.S. Bach's best-known son, composed a number of great works, some of which are featured on this release. Born in 1714, C.P.E Bach's ...

Appealing Junction of Master Oboists & Composers
This two CD set brings together eleven great composers: Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Marcello, Vaughan Williams, Ravel, Schumann, Britten, Poulenc and Stravinsky with their compositions for oboe. These are played by eight oboists: Black, Gomberg, Holliger, Koch, Mack, Nicklin, Schellenberger and Still. This is all world oboe team from Europe as well as states. For many like me you will find both ...

James Galway ~ Meditations6 reviews
Jules Massenet, George Frideric Handel, ...

RCA, 1998

A Masterpiece
I am a college student and I am majoring in music education. My primary instrument is the flute, and my goal is to attain all of the pieces that I have studied. By buying this CD with many different selections has saved me the aggravation of purchasing many different CDs. James Galway is an extremely talented man, and this collection shows off his capabilities with flare. There are selections ...

C.P.E. Bach: Hamburg Concertos3 reviews
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, CPE Bach, ...

Virgin Veritas, 2001

Van Asperen brings back the sounds of Hamburg
Up front, let me say that the performers here (not listed by Amazon at this writing) are Bob van Asperen, soloist and conductor, directing Melante Amsterdam. This recording from the early 1980s, finally released on CD, presents C.P.E. Bach's six harpsichord concerti, Wq. 43 (Helm 471-6). The timing is rather short weight for a 2 CD set, clocking in at just under 90 minutes (and in the original ...

Switched-On Bach II11 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Wendy Carlos

East Side Digital, 2002

Staggering for the time, holds up well today
Switched-On Bach II (along with The Well-Tempered Synthesizer) really shows what the analogue Moog gear could do in the hands of people who knew what they were doing. The performances hold up and the arrangements make the most of the material. This is Bach, after all, so that's a pretty tall order. Wendy and Rachel's experience on the earlier albums shows. After nearly 40 years Switched-On ...

Greatest Hits HANDEL ~ Water Music, Largo, etc..4 reviews
George Frideric Handel, Raymond Leppard, ...

Sony, 1994

All Handel's Greatest Hits are not created equal.
Nothing else tops this unusually gorgeous rendering. Leppard's is the finest conducting of Handel to this reviewers ears. Especially the Xerxes Largo and the Watermusic Hornpipes and Fireworks Oveurture tempi, legato and orchestration is full of warmth and energy. A true chiara scuro interpretation. Fabulous!!!!

Bach - Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook (highlights) / Hunt-Liberson, McGegan6 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, C.P.E. Bach, ...

Harmonia Mundi Classical Express, 2001

Anna Magdalena Notebook-- a treasure trove of Baroque music
This is music for contemplating number and time and not realize you are doing that. These pieces from Anna Magdalena Bach's notebook are a significant part of the history of western culture, and the music is brilliant, lucid, and passionate. Just as, I suppose, Bach's wife was. Played on harpsichord and clavichord, the work-- not all by Bach-- seems rigourously, mysteriously modern, and the ...

40 Famous Marches10 reviews
Kenneth J. Alford, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, ...

Decca, 2000

Bold and brassy mixes well with the rest
I am impressed most by the variety in 40 Famous Marches on 2 CDs, a Double Decca release. The performers include Philharmonic Orchestras, a Brass Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, organ, Symphony, and for nine selections, the Wiener Philharmoniker. I am not sure if the word schmaltzy ought to be applied to any of this, but the Wiener Philharmoniker often exhibits a unique sound which is not quite ...

Bach: Inventions and Sinfonias (Complete)5 reviews
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

Naxos, 1994

Straightforward playing
Janos Sebestyen plays these study pieces clearly, crisply, and cleanly. The tempi are nicely set, and his delicate use of rhythms sounds as though he is playing on the harpsichord. Included on this album are a few selections from the notebook Bach made for his second wife Anna Magdalena, including that perennially charming Minuet in G, Anh. 114.

Bach: Partita And Sonatas For Flute1 review
Roland Ridoux, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, ...

Sony, 1990

Just beautiful
Great performances. The sound is very clear. My personal favorite is the partita for solo flute. Though much less well known than the solo cello, solo lute and solo violin works by Bach, this work shows much of the same qualities. Highly recommended

Greatest Hits ~ Baroque2 reviews
George Frideric Handel, Jean-Philippe Rameau, ...

Sony, 1995

Outstanding sampler
It is impossible of course to capture Baroque music on a single CD, but if you want just one it doesn't get any better than this. Outstanding and generous selection of many of the best known excerpts of the period, excellent performances throughout, and superior sound quality. Even the casual listener will recognize many of these great works, such as the theme from Masterpiece Theater, ...

Glenn Gould Plays Bach & Scarlatti7 reviews
Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Johann Bernhard Bach, ...

Sony, 1997

Be warned there are shortcomings, but also be prepared for brilliance!
There are some shortcomings to this album and they are pointed out by other reviewers. However, there are gems present here that continue to dazzle long after Glenn Gould's untimely death. I was particularly moved by BWV 974, especially the second movement. I would happily pay the entire price of this album just to have this particular recording. As everyone knows, Glenn Gould was ...

Gustav Leonhardt Jubilee Edition1 review
Harry van der Kamp, Anner Bylsma, ...

Sony Bmg Europe, 2008

Authentic Anthology
After leaving the Netherlands almost twenty years ago and since then no longer attending Leonhardt concerts or listening to his lp recordings, the appearance of this economically priced anthology offered a welcoming incentive to reacquaint myself with the keyboard player whom many consider as the most authoritative interpreter of baroque music. Together with Walcha's organ and harpsichord ...

Masters of the Trumpet5 reviews
Johann Georg Albrechtsberger, Johann Ernst Altenburg, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2005

fun trumpets
"Masters of The Trumpet" is a simple and accurate title for this 2- disc collection. The recordings cover trumpet/cornet literature ranging from Gabrieli to Stravinsky. Especially enjoyable moments are Don Smithers playing Reiche's "Abblasen" & Armando Ghitalla's work on Stravinsky's "Marche Royale" (L'Histoire du Soldat). Rafael Mendez sounds as though he has more fun playing than should ...

Baroque Masterpieces3 reviews
Tomaso Albinoni, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, ...

Sony, 2002

Excellent Baroque Collection
As I have stated in many of my previous reviews, I am a huge fan of the Sony Essential Classics (SEC) budget series. Most of the recordings feature classic and often definitive performances featuring the likes of George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Casadesus, Isaac Stern and Rudolf Serkin among others. Here we get a variety of orchestras and conductors including big names like Jean-Claude ...

Italian Christmas Music1 review
Luigi Boccherini, Arcangelo Corelli, ...

Sony Special Product, 1995

Just beautiful!
Just because I love the sound of Italian, and I just love Italy, I ordered this CD for not much dependable info. I am so glad to own this now. It is such a beautiful CD that I can't believe it's so cheap. This is definitely a bargain find.
