Liszt for Lovers: Piano Dreams of Love and Passion3 reviews
Franz Liszt, Claudio Arrau, ...

Philips, 1997

Beautiful Music for a Romantic Evening
The CD insert design of the Set Your Life to Music series might suggest that this is a collection "Classical Lite." However, while this compilation provides some Liszt's most well-known music, these beautiful and deep pieces should not be mistaken for "easy listening." These are wonderful compositions by a great composer, performed by musicians of the highest caliber (especially Claudio Arrau). ...

Debussy for Daydreaming21 reviews
Claude Debussy, André Previn, ...

Philips, 1995

Life Is But A Dream...
This CD is just pure magic. I know that is such a cliche' thing to say, but it really is. Of course, it really won't appeal to those people who are into EXTREME LIVING...whatever the hell that means, because to me, extreme living is living close to the soul, close to the spirit, close to the Invisible Source that makes and creates all things in and out of Itself. Debussy was a composer who ...

Beethoven for Babies14 reviews
Ludwig van Beethoven, Frans Brüggen, ...

Philips, 1998

Nicest classical CD I have found for my baby (& me)
This is a very pleasant CD to listen to, and I think the quality of the music is excellent. I enjoy listening to this with my 10 month old son, and we also listen to the radio and lots of modern music. I recently purchased 5 of the classical "Baby Einstein" CDs and I consider them to be inferior to this Beethoven for Babies CD. The Baby Einstein are very synthesized sounding and I think they are ...

Beethoven: Piano Sonatas11 reviews
Ludwig van Beethoven, Claudio Arrau

Philips, 1990

A very passionate and serious-minded Beethoven.
Claudio Arrau is not always an easy pianist to listen to. His playing is sometimes very irritating and at times can seem boring. Not everyone will agree with his Beethoven playing, and his playing in general, but many will be fascinated by his complex intellectuality. His Beethoven playing, particularly the sonatas, are some of his best and most interesting work. If anyone was to own one ...

Liszt: 12 Études d'exécution transcendante [Hybrid SACD]1 review
F. Liszt, Claudio Arrau

Pentatone, 2008

A Classic Recording as It Was Meant to be Heard
Claudio Arrau recorded the Transcendental Studies of Liszt in 1974 when he was in his seventies and still very much in command of his marvelous technique, not to speak of his musicianship. The recording was made in the then-new quadraphonic (four-channel) process by Philips and issued on quadraphonic LPs. That format was a commercial failure and did not survive. It was also issued on ...

Chopin: The Complete Nocturnes And Impromptus39 reviews
Frederic Chopin, Claudio Arrau

Claudio Arrau, Enchanting
The eloquence of this enchanting artist is an absolute joy. Excellent recording. A treasure in my collection.

Brahms at Bedtime: A Sleepytime Serenade6 reviews
Janos Starker, Julian Lloyd Webber, ...

Philips, 1996

A good choice for quiet time and nap.
This is one of my favorite nap and quiet time choices. It is very mellow and soothing. My three year old frequently falls asleep listening to it, and even turns it on again for herself if she wakes up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep!

The best Chopin you can buy
The most sensitive piano playing I've ever heard. My wife likes it too.

Tchaikovsky At Tea Time: A Refreshing Blend For Body And Spirit7 reviews
Julian Lloyd Webber, Kenneth Heath, ...

Philips, 1996

Beautiful
One of the best aspects of Tchiakovsky's music is the ocnsistency: he just DIDN'T compose any bad pieces. And with such consistency, you can compile a CD such as this. THis CD gives you a proper taste of Tchaikovsky's style, and is a very nice sampler of some of his most famous works. This CD lacks some of his more energetically volatile works, but it thus lives up to its title. It is extremely ...

For the Hopeless Romantic1 review
Johann Sebastian Bach, Georges Bizet, ...

Decca, 2005

Top notch!
Of the whole series, this and one other (for Book Lovers) are my favorites. I love classical music but find much of it hard to listen to as the volume goes from soft to loud and back. This CD is a collection of gentle classical pieces perfect for background music during most any occasion. It doesn't jar at any point, but peacefully accompanies whatever is going on.

Debussy at Dawn2 reviews
George Pieterson, Claude Debussy, ...

Philips, 1997

An absolute joy
So many pieces on this album are jewels. "Le fille aux cheveux de lin" and "Nocturnes for Orchestra - Sirenes" are particularly heavenly. "The Sea at Dawn" has an amazing sense of freshness and motion to it and is well placed at the beginning of the CD. A few of the songs on here make excellent background music but lack memorable themes. I wish I could wake up to this CD every morning, truly.

For Your Baby1 review
Julian Lloyd Webber, Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

Decca, 2004

Wonderful music for little ones (and big ones)
If you are searching for a true classical music CD for your little one, this CD is a pleasure. From the sweet, tinkling Aquarium to Mozart's playful Baby Steps, you and your child will experience classical music as it was meant to be, with all its rushes and subtleties.

The Golden Age of Piano8 reviews
David Dubal, Claudio Arrau

Decca, 2003

5 Stars Nonetheless
Regrettably, the host is dull and his comments are often biased. Moreover, a lot of the clips overlap those of "The Art of Piano". Having said that, this DVD is rich in materials. We are provided with a lot of photos/paintings of the legendary pianists, their background as well as the birth of modern pianos and their predecessors. With Paderewski (Chopin Polanaise and his own Minuet), Hoffmann ...

Liszt: Sonata in B Minor; Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude10 reviews
Claudio Arrau, Franz Liszt

Philips, 2002

A Great CD
This is what I compare all other Liszt Sonata recordings to. Arrau should hold a spot in every classical collector's library. The other tracks are well selected and well played. Sound quality is decent. Very enjoyable.

Beethoven: The Complete Piano Sonatas & Concertos26 reviews
Claudio Arrau, Janos Starker, ...

Philips, 1999

Magisterial... mystical
I've been listening to Beethoven's sonatas for fifty years and have heard all of them by some, and some of them by all the available recorded performers. Overall, Claudio Arrau is my favorite interpreter of the sonatas. To me he has an inner affinity with Beethoven that is uncanny. Beethoven was a man of great character. And that greatness, detached from his person in the form of musical ...

Adagios for After Hours2 reviews
Karl Leister, Tomaso Albinoni, ...

Philips, 2000

Absolutely perfect
This is a wonderful collection of some of the most beautiful, relaxing classical music composed by the greatest artists of our history. My personal favorites, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and Gabriel Faure, are well represented here. The selections are made based on their ability to relax, and transport you to another place. They certainly succeed. In these troubled and stressful times, we need ...

Ultimate Chopin2 reviews
Frederic Chopin, Charles Dutoit, ...

Decca, 2007

Prime rib for the price of a burger
If you are new to classical, or if your classical collection has a big Chopin hole in it, this set is a great place to start. This is a budget product, but it features some of the all time great pianists from the 20th century who are also very famous for their Chopin performances. Some of the "ultimate" packages can only paint a very partial picture of the composer(s). For example, the ...

Great Pianists of the 20th Century - Selections from the definitive collection [Sampler]7 reviews
Fryderyk Chopin, Johannes Brahms, ...

Polygram Records Philips, 1998

Unparalled Excellence (Mark G. Davis)
If you only purchase one classical piano cd in your entire life, this one should be it. All the masters, at their very best on it. If you have piano cd's, this should be part of that collection. I purchased one, almost not believing what I read on the jacket. I'm telling my friends about this one, as I'm aware of no other CD having all those piano masters - - at any price?)...
