Thunder Pipes1 review
Allan Barker, Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

Black Tulips, 1993

One of the few recordings by Flath
Ted Flath, conductor and music director of the California Bach Society, was also a very hot organist. He was famous for his strenuous and inspired white knuckle New Years Eve organ concerts at Grace Cathedral in SF, and his blazing productions of Bach's works at the Opera House, St. Mary's Cathedral, and other major venues. If you've ever attended one of his concerts or been in his groups, you'll ...

Harold Shapero - Chamber Music
Rhonda Rider, Harold Samuel Shapero, ...

New World Records, 2003

The revival of Harold Shapero's Symphony for Classical Orchestra by André Previn and the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1988 spearheaded a renewed interest in his long-neglected major works. Nevertheless, Shapero's (b. 1920) vastly underrated portfolio today remains the great undiscovered treasure trove of American neoclassicism. The String Trio, the String Quartet, the Serenade in D encompass a uniquely broad-based introduction to Shapero's ...

Three Sonatas for Double Bass1 review
Paul Hindemith, Franz Schubert, ...

Boston Records, 2001

Excellent Technique and Feel for the Musical Periods
Technically speaking, this is a very excellent recording: the CD manages to capture the sound of the players nearly perfectly, a difficult task given the range of the bass. I was impressed by the flawless balance between Edwin Barker and his accompanists throughout. Mr. Barker's performance is also topnotch: he gets a very mellow, natural, and most importantly clear sound from his instrument, ...

James Yannatos: Violin Concerto; Symphony Brevis; Concerto for Contrabass1 review
James Yannatos, Edwin Barker, ...

Albany Records, 2006

Part of a Fine Body of Work by a Virtually Unknown Composer
James Yannatos arrived at Harvard in 1964 to take up what was supposed to be a temporary assignment as conductor of the Harvard-Radcliffe Symphony Orchestra. He's still laboring in that vineyard after more than forty years and during that time has coaxed, cajoled, led, inspired the orchestra to play as well as they are able -- a very high standard indeed. They have played hundreds of concerts, ...

Charles Ives: The String Quartets2 reviews
Rhonda Rider, Charles Ives, ...

Centaur, 1993

If you want to learn the Ives quartets, get this CD
This is an excellent recording of the Ives quartets, pieces which are very approachable, classically, compared to the rest of Ives' works. The quartet, recorded in their accustomed home at Brandeis, is very well balanced, and the beautiful viola and cello playing is heard clearly. The short pieces 'Hymn' and 'Halowe'en' are a bonus.

Concerti for Double Bass1 review
Theodor Antoniou, Tom Johnson, ...

G.M. Recordings, 2005

Ed Barker is the model musician!
Living in Boston and experiencing Mr. Barker's playing up close and personel I have come to realize how solid and amazing Ed really is. I have seen him play live many times and he sounds even better than he does on his recordings! He is truly a first class musician who just happens to play the bass! Buy this album and the 3 Sonatas for double bass album, which includes one of the best recordings ...
