Lockenhaus Festival 19951 review
Alfia Bekova, Vladimir Tinkha, ...

Bis, 1996

Generally minor material, with some strong moments, and best left to collectors
This BIS disc contains several performances recorded at the 1995 Lockenhaus Festival where the spotlight was on Sofia Gubaidulina (there are also two Viktor Suslin pieces, but I shall pass over those). Lockenhaus was the creation of violinist Gidon Kremer, who brought Gubaidulina to worldwide attention when he toured with her concerto "Offertorium", and besides performing on violin himself here, ...

Ligeti: Trio; Continuum1 review

Wergo Germany, 1993

Valuable Recording of Invaluable Music
I recently performed the Ligeti Horn Trio (1st piece on this CD), and found this particular recording to be very intersting and helpful in understanding Mr. Ligeti's music. The pieces for harpsichord on this CD were truly unbelievable, but the Horn Trio is without a doubt one of the most important pieces written in the last 50 years and this is a good performance of the work. I would strongly ...

Poulenc: Concerto for organ & strings in Gm3 reviews
Francis Poulenc, Jean-Claude Casadesus, ...

Naxos, 1999

A Must Buy
Poulenc was a fabulous composer during the early 20th century, composing in an idiom that would disappear in the face of war. His music is characterized by a certain lightness of feeling that leaves one happy after every performance. This CD, though consisting of some works in a minor key, perfectly reflects this sentiment of lightness and playfulness so often absent from many composers of ...

Michael Nyman, Edition No. 1: Concertos2 reviews
John Harle, Julian Lloyd Webber, ...

Angel Records, 1997

Two out ot three ain't bad!
This CD contains three concerti written by Nyman in the late 1990s: his Double Concerto for Saxophone and Cello, his Concerto for Harpsichord and Orchestra, and his Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra. Of these, the outer two works are fine pieces, full of excitement, lyricism and interest; well worth repeated listening. The Harpsichord Concerto, however, is not nearly as successful a ...

György Ligeti Edition 6: Keyboard Works (Piano, Harpsichord, Organ) - Irina Kataeva / Pierre-Laurent Aimard / ...6 reviews
Gyorgy Ligeti, Elisabeth Chojnacka, ...

Sony, 1997

More 'sci-fi' inspired music
This 6th installment of the Gyorgy Ligeti Edition contains one (Harmonies) of Ligeti's three pieces used by Stanley Kubrick in the '2001' soundtrack. For that reason alone, this CD is a bit more interesting than some of the others in this series. To me, as a representative of the average listener who happens to like a very broad range of musical styles, this CD is more interesting than Ligeti's ...

Hommage A Piazzolla11 reviews

Nonesuch, 1996

Wonderfully captivating music by the tango master
I was introduced to the music of Astor Piazzolla by the more than great violinist Gidon Kremer when he played a virtuosic tango as an encore. Whenever a rich new vein of wonderful music is opened to me, well, it makes for a bright and happy day. Not long after I picked up this CD and I can recommend it to you highly. This is more than just tango dance music, these are serious and contemplative ...

Henryk Mikolaj Górecki: Kleines Requiem für Eine Polka (Little Requiem for a Polka), Op. 66 (1993) / Concerto ...4 reviews
David Zinman, Andrew Crowley, ...

Nonesuch, 1995

Gorecki at his finest
This CD offers a broad range of styles that showcase Gorcki's talent as a composer. The three pieces on this CD have something for everyone. The Requiem starts out slow and sublime and as soft as his 3rd Symphony, then gradually builds up, abruptly changes tempo, and reels into a fast polka in two. The polka is just marvelous, sounding demented and joyous at the same time. Repeated notes in ...

Donatoni: In canda; Portrait; Duo pour Bruno1 review
Franco Donatoni, Arturo Tamayo, ...

Stradivarius, 2000

Excellent music by a great post - war composer
Franco Donatoni is one of the composers schooled in Darmstadt with Boulez, Stockhausen, Cage, Nono and Barraque under Oliver Messiaen. Compared with this group, his music is not well represented by performers. I do not understand why. Donatoni is an excellent composer and was as prolific as Boulez or Nono. If you enjoy the work of any of the Darmstadt composers, I suggest that you would enjoy ...
