Peaceful and Beautiful
I have purchased this CD twice, first for myself to listen to during labor and secondly for a friend who has a new, very stressful job. I love the music on this CD, it is wonderfully played and listening it to it during labor was very helpful and uplifting. Now both my daughter and I enjoy listening to it, and during fussy days it calms her down a bit, which is very nice. The music truly ...

Diversity in Christmas Traditions
It is getting more difficult each Christmas Season to find discs that offer Christmas choral music that is infused with a sense of "rootedness" borne out of time-hewn tradition and at the same time compliments--rather than rehashes--the existing repertoire of age-old Christmas choral music. This is one of those rare discs that accomplishes this difficult task of offering a different approach ...

Wonderfully fine performance
This is one opera I have been searching for for a very long time. I read about it in a book about Sullivan. Of course, when they wrote of the opera, they showed the scene, in drawing, where Rebecca informs Ivanhoe of the battle with the Black Knight. The drawing (based on the actual performance when it premiered) grabbed my attention completely. I just wondered what this composer could do with ...

2 times 2 quartets makes 2 octets
Written when he was only 15 years old, Mendelssohn's octet in E-flat Major is one of those pieces you will just shake your head and say "i can't believe that was written by a 15 year old!" How many people can remember what they were doing at 15. Well on this disc we have the fruits of one 15 year old, in all of its innate lyrical tension and drama. The recording brings together the ...

From The Isles To The Courts
\ It's very exciting to follow a group of musicians on their journey together, especially when that journey is made with heart, with fire, and with honor to tradition. Original tunes make easy friends with the traditional on this must-have CD. Love the Scollay's medley, for example, with The Dance Goes On as the last tune. It all works really well! The high quality of the sound itself, the ...

The best at what they do!
I just got back from a Hamilton College performance of this group and was very impressed. Not only do they master the old but they write the new! Keeping to the style of those they play of course. Of all the CDs that they have made, this is their most famous and covers the 11th to the 20th century. I can fall asleep to it, I can write a paper to it, or just enjoy it by itself.

Anderson and Roe Reimagine
Having watched their videos on You Tube I couldn't wait for these disks to appear. These two are fantastic entertainers and brilliant keyboard artists. It's so refreshing to meet new young artists of this calibre and to be amazed by their technical wizardry. Who wants to hire a full symphony orchestra to play the Rite of Spring when it can be done so well by just two people on two pianos!

Amazing Value
I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!

Wonderful
Paul Hillier, having lived in the U.S. for several years, developed a love for early American music, which shows in his release of the 2-volume "Early American Choral Music." This love continues in "Traditional and Modern Carols," a Christmas CD which includes several early American spirituals, as well as English songs from other eras and locales. Some of the American spirituals Hillier includes ...

An absolute riot, and a lot of great (if brief) music!
What a wonderful project. Pianist extraordinaire Guy Livingston has assembled 60 pieces for piano, each under one minute in length, from composers well-known and obscure, and put them all together in this delightful collection. Some of the composers you'll recognize are Englishman Dan Warburton and American William Bolcom, but all of the pieces are worth noting. Some use electronics, percussion, ...

I had ther pleasure of playing Cyrano when the original cast album was only in vinyl. I am extremely happy to get it on CD. The melodies, soar and some of Maltby and Shire's best pieces reside in this work. I fyou are looking for something exciting for your theater group try this CD and see what all the fuss it about!

The performances contained herein are very good. I only wish there were more Sousa marches in the collection. However, those that are there are well-performed and the recording is very good.

... and sometimes it's a good idea to play Brahms like it was written by Schoenberg
It's nice to have this back in print. Honestly any recording of this unique opera--any that involves a major orchestra, soloists, and conductor--should be an event and a no-brainer acquisition for Schoenberg buffs. I think the interesting story here may be not Solti telling the orchestra to "play it like Brahms" but the difficulties Solti probably had in getting this recorded. Don't quote me but ...

A real winner with plenty of talent.
This 2-CD selection from Deutsche Grammophon, "Masters of the Voce, Soprano" follows a review we did earlier on the "Masters" series for tenors in which we rated the tenor package a success. This offering succeeds on multiple levels as well and proves to be an equally enjoyable listen. DG has put together 30 popular and diverse arias that not only give us a good sampling of some of the finest ...
