Mozart: Clarinet Concerto; Concerto for Flute & Harp2 reviews
Emma Johnson, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, ...

Asv Living Era, 1993

Subtle, Majestic, Sweeping, Introspective
This is a fabulous CD. The Adagio movement of the Concerto for Clarinet in A is breathtakingly beautiful and is my favorite piece of orchestral music. The entire CD is a worthwhile listen -- a great score and wonderfully rendered by Emma Johnson, Raymond Leppard (conductor), and the English Chamber Orchestra. Perfect music either for thinking or relaxing.

Joseph Haydn - The Creation / Kirkby, Rolfe Johnson, George, AAM, Hogwood3 reviews
Christopher Hogwood, Emma Kirkby

L'Oiseau-Lyre (Decca Classics), 2008

Not quite what I expected
This is a superb musical performance and recording of Haydn's The Creation. The soloists are excellent, as are the chorus and (very large) orchestra of period instruments. It is sung in English. Surprisingly there are no subtitles at all. The video images are mostly of nature scenery, very beautifully filmed, though there are also some shots of landscape paintings. We also see the musicians ...

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang6 reviews
Original London Cast

Sony, 2005

altogether a fine cast album
CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, the cheerfully-mindless musical by the Sherman Brothers, was mounted for the West End stage in 2002, opened at the London Palladium and enjoyed a run of nearly three and-a-half years (the subsequent Broadway production fared less well). The Sherman Brothers score sparks either rapture or revulsion depending on whom you ask, but the musical does offer some quaint charms. ...

Bach: Magnificat, BWV. 243; Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen20 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, John Eliot Gardiner, ...

Philips, 1990

Bach's Magnificat is Here Magnificent!
This is a magnificent recording of Bach's Magnificat. The sound quality is superb, the soloists and choir clear and moving, and the orchestra flawless in execution. In fact, the Gardiner series of recordings (the Mass in B minor, St. Matthew's Passion, St. John's Passion, and the Christmas Oratorio), can easily form a "backbone" of a classical music collection due to their stunning clarity, ...

Mozart - Requiem / Kirkby · Watkinson · Rolfe Johnson · D. Thomas · AAM · Hogwood25 reviews
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Christopher Hogwood, ...

Decca, 1990

The best recording of the Requiem I have ever heard
Well, to start things off I was an AP music theory student for two years. We studied tons of stuff and Mozart just happens to be my favorite composer. Anyway, from the minute I learned of the Requiem I absolutely fell in love with it. My teacher had THIS recording, and upon graduation I realized I had to track it down. So I came to Amazon.com and ordered it. First of all, I have to agree- Emma ...

Haydn - The Creation / Kirkby, Rolfe Johnson, George, AAM, Hogwood4 reviews
Joseph Haydn, Christopher Hogwood, ...

Polygram Records, 1990

Big, Fast, In English, and A Great Pleasure
This is a unique "Creation". Hogwood massed forces of the same size that Haydn used for the first performance and recorded the proceedings in the same type of hall. He uses period instruments, including a forte piano for the recitatives. The result is a disc with a sound all its own. Another plus for me is that the libretto is sung in English. The performance is fast, coming in at about 98 ...

La Clarinette Francaise1 review
Emma Johnson, Claude Debussy, ...

Asv Living Era, 1993

She's not Myers but she's good
This album is delightful. Because Myers is superior to Johnson, I ordered his album with the Saint-Saens Sonata for Clarinette and piano. Unfortunately the rest of the album was not nearly as good as the Emma Johnson one. This album is delightful and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Vaughan Williams: English Folk Song Suite / Lark Ascending1 review
Denis Wick, London Wind Orchestra

Asv Living Era, 2002

Excellent classical music
This is the first ASV Platinum album that I've bought. As a collector of classical music, this album contains the finest classical recordings I've ever heard. All of the instruments are so resonant that it sounds like the musicians are sitting right next to you. This album contains some of Vaughan Williams' finest work, such as The Ascent of the Lark, English Folk Song Suite, and Six Studies ...

The Essential Hyperion (Label Highlight Compilation)3 reviews
Stephen Varcoe, Thea King, ...

Hyperion UK, 1995

This truly is essential!
What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions ...

Pastoral: Emma Johnson plays British Clarinet Music1 review
Emma Johnson, Arnold Bax, ...

Asv Living Era, 1994

Beautiful, rich sound, excellent CD
Emma Johnson produces a very rich and clear tone on the clarinet in these pieces. The works themselves are very good, and there are a couple of vocal pieces added towards the end. This is a CD full of music that is played wonderfully and should please anyone interested in the clarinet and in classical music in general.

Handel - Messiah · Israel In Egypt / Taverner Choir & Players, Parrott3 reviews
George Frideric Handel, Andrew Parrott, ...

Virgin Classics, 2004

Wonderful execution and extraordinary value
Andrew Parrott's recordings of Handel's "Messiah" and "Israel in Egypt" are reintroduced in this budget box that has so much going for it that no version extant can really compare in terms of musical value, execution of the score and dollar value. At a list price of $17 -- and usually available for less than that -- this four-disk set presents a tremendous value to lovers of this music. ...
