R. Strauss: Ariadne auf Naxos5 reviews
Walter Berry, Axelle Gall

Deutsche Grammophon, 2008

At long last, an Ariadne without a weak link
Ariadne auf Naxos is one of my all-time favorite operas, but part of me was a bit skeptical of this video. It sounded too good to be true. Gundula Janowitz, Edita Gruberova, Rene Kollo, and Walter Berry all in one video? With the venerable Karl Bohm waving the stick. Well, don't hesitate, because in my opinion this is *the* Ariadne to own! The Met video has Jessye Norman in her brief but ...

Mozart review
The CD was in good condition...my only complaint is that I was disappointed because it was not Oskar Werner's voice...someone else's voice was on CD. I did not know that when I ordered it. Otherwise, it is okay. But I was disappointed in that. But it is better than nothing. I would rather have it in German than dubbed over.

Superb and brilliant work .....
The place: Count Almaviva's - governor of Andalusia - palace in Spain. Countess Rosina is Almaviva's wife but ignorant of the fact that her husband is trying to use the ancient regime credo - the right of the seigneur. (Primae noctis). The Count is looking for amorous advances towards Susanna, the Countess maid and head chambermaid, before the consummation of her marriage to Figaro. Susanna ...

Lehar: Die lustige Witwe; Das Land des Lächelns1 review
Franz Lehar, Otto Ackermann, ...

EMI Classics, 2004

An incredible bargain for two classic operettas
EMI recorded both of these Lehar operettas in 1953. They were rapturously received and haven't been out of print since. The sonics were never good in the orchestral parts, the worse offender being Land des Lachelns (The Land of Smiles, meaning Japan), where microphone distortion and cramped boxiness makes for congested acoustics. The Merry widow comes off better. The orchestra and voices are ...

Karajan 100th - Volume 2, Opera and Vocals5 reviews
Erich Kunz, Boris Christoff, ...

EMI Classics, 2008

Priceless... at a very low price
Most people considering this set are probably already familiar with Karajan's work and probably already own quite a few of his EMI recordings. Therefore, there really is no need for me to get into depth with regards to the quality of the Karajan's work or the recordings. It is at a bare minimum, satisfactory; in most cases excellent. The real issue here is is it worth spending the money for ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2008

The Ultimate Viennese Production
I'm a great classical music buff and saw this production of a true Austrian Operetta in Vienna many years ago, this is the real stuff as you would see it in Vienna and the Actors are superb, I been waiting for this to be released on DVD for many years, Renate Holm as Maid, is absolutely the best . It is in the original Viennese dialect, subtitles in English.

Very good
I have bought this cd opera and I listened it yesterday evening. I live in Ceneda of Vittorio Veneto (Italy) where Da Ponte was born. I have other two version (Solti director and Muti director) but this is the best. Very good the director and very good the interpreters. I have talked with many italian teacher's classical music; they said me that this edition (Furtwaengler director in Salzburg ...

EMI Classics, 1999

Come with me to a supper.
"Come with me to a supper." So sings Dr Falke to his crony Eisenstein. And what a supper it turns out to be! Besides the champagne, the dancing and the food provided at the villa of the world-weary young Prince Orlovsky, we see Eisenstein flirting with a masked "Hungarian lady" (Eisenstein's wife in disguise), Eisenstein's maid Adele (in a ball dress filched from her mistress's wardrobe) ...

Famous performance, but without recitatives
Source: Studio recording made at the Musikvereinssaal in Vienna 17-21 June 17-21, October 23-27 and October 31, 1950. Sound: This is an analogue recording. It was originally issued in state-of-the-art 1950s mono. It was digitally remastered at Abbey Road Studios in 1999. I am not familiar with the soundscape of this particular budget-priced issue, but sad experience with other EMI ...

German University Songs, Vol. 42 reviews
Erich Kunz & The Chorus and Orchestra of the Vienna Sta

Vanguard Classics, 2000

Just a notch below Vols. 1 and 2 but still marvelous
Back in the Golden Age of the LP, one record that I "played into whiteness" was the Vanguard collection of "German University Songs" with Erich Kunz and the Vienna State Opera Male Chorus and Orchestra. Starting with the "Fox Hunt" song made so popular by Brahms' "Academic Festival Overture" and ending with two stanzas of "Gaudeamus igitur," this joyous disc afforded me endless delight. A ...

German University Songs, Vol. 33 reviews
Erich Kunz, Wilhelm Briesewitz, ...

Vanguard Classics, 1999

Superb renditions of lesser-known German songs
By the time Kunz and his Vienna State Opera forces had reached this 3rd volume, much of the really popular songs had been used up in the earlier two--and by all means grab Vol. 1 as soon as you can. "Tannenbaum" is an exception, as is the ever-popular Goethe lyric "Heidenroslein." So if this collection suffers at all, it does so only in comparison with the earlier releases in the series, and ...

Lehár: The Merry Widow1 review
Franz Lehar, Otto Ackermann, ...

Opera D'oro, 2004

The most joyous Merry Widow of all
Although I could easily live or die by Schwarzkopf's version of The Merry Widow made in stereo with von Matacic as conductor, this earlier mono recording from 1953 exudes sheer joy. For naturalness and the true Viennese style, many prefer it. In her prime Schwarzkopf's ability to communicate a silvery ecstasy through her voice was unique. Opera d'Oro has seized upon the fact that EMI's classic ...

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, ...

EMI Classics, 1999

Severely Underrated!
There's nothing quite like the conducting of the young Herbert von Karajan. Listening to his early '50s Mozart recordings is like tasting fine vintage wine. I didn't care too much for this set at first, but it grew and grew on me, and now I can't do without it. I believe any Mozart collector should own at least two recordings of 'Magic Flute,' and this should definitely be one of them. ...

Vanguard Classics, 2000

Wonderful singing, wonderful songs
So you can *pretend* you understand Tscherman. The lyrics, in English and in German, are included. Erich Kunz manages to make each song its own little world, and what wonderful songs. I love all 5 records in this set - I'm sorry the first 2 are hard to find (one of those is my other fave of this series). The solo pieces alternate with pieces with a choir, and as on the other 4 records, you ...

Decca, 2005

Superlative recording with lost gala tradition intact
This is one of the grand old recordings from the glory days of the mid-sixties. It has opulent casting and even more opulent sound values. I doubt that anyone will quibble about the overall quality of this venture. Therefore I just wanted to address a couple of complaints that appeared in another review of this recording. First of all, the role of Orlofsky was written for a mezzo and NOT for a ...

Surprising!
Edita Gruberova sings the 'Queen of Night'. It's really amzing and surprising in speed. From long time ago, almost all the famous sopranos have been singing this role who has to sing 2 famous arias. Sumi jo, Wilma Lipp, Rita Streich, Luciana Serra, Erika Koth, Natalie Dessay and so on. But she is the fastest. The feeling speed seems to be half of others. Purchasing this CD for listening this aria ...
