Pavarotti's Greatest Hits15 reviews
Vincenzo Bellini, Georges Bizet, ...

Decca, 2007

Excellent Survey of Pavarotti's Work
For someone who is already a student of opera, this dual set will probably be somewhat redundant. However, if you are curious about opera in general or are unfamiliar with Pavarotti's recordings, this is an excellent anthology. I bought it as two cassettes some 20 years ago and wore it out, beginning a life-long love affair with opera. Use it to familiarize yourself with the songs and arias ...

A very special Christmas album
My wife and I love Christmas music, but this album is in a class by itself. It is opera, classical music, Christmas carols, and the most heartfelt and expressive personal expression of religious feeling. It is exalted and joyous, and to my wife and me, inexpressively beautiful. We're listening to "O Holy Night" as I type this on Christmas Eve, as we've listened to this album since its release, ...

Pavarotti's Opera Made Easy-My Favourite Opera For Children4 reviews

Fun, accessible opera for you and your child to enjoy
I bought this CD for my then 3 year old son. He loved it then because it was the "Bugs Bunny" music he was familiar with from the cartoons. He listened to it for awhile then we put it away. After he turned 4, he said to me one day -- let's listen to opera, and now we listen to this CD every day. This music gets his blood going; he struts around his room when he listens to this. And, he is ...

Four Last Songs7 reviews

Decca, 2008

'Habe dank!'
This very generous two disc release has so many positive aspects that it hopefully will manage to garner the attention of music lovers around the world despite the negative comments being published in some quarters. Fame of an artist is accompanied by that very public eye and ear that references previous performances and recordings of repeated works as being superior to a new issue, and while ...

Mozart - Requiem / Augér, Bartoli, Cole, Pape, Wiener Phil., Solti21 reviews
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Georg Solti, ...

Decca, 1992

Better than Bernstein
Good buy. This Requiem version is wonderful and uplifting. Bought Leonard Bernstein's version some years ago. It moves so slowly and seems full of unrelenting angst--sounds more like Wagner than Mozart. If you like the music of Mozart's Requiem, this version is much more friendly.

great collection
If one was wanting to introduce a friend to the wonderful world of opera, this would be a great cd to buy them. Also at this time when many of us are worrying about Luciano and his health , it is great to hear him featured on many of the selections. A great buy and wonderful collection.

Driving and Singing
This is a wonderful CD to sing along with in "rotten" traffic. All of a sudden, it just dosen't matter that much. If it can do this for me, it will help even the most "miserable" (in thought, word and deed), driver. Worth having in the car.

Verdi: Requiem; Quattro pezzi sacri4 reviews
Giuseppe Verdi, Georg Solti, ...

Decca, 2006

An Energetic and highly Dramatic Verdi Requiem
Of all of Verdi's latter works, the Verdi requiem is perhaps my favorite after Otello. Although it was written as a Requiem mass, I find that Verdi's composition recalls something that sounds more operatic than parochial, and for this reason, I don't think that it should be treated merely as a church piece. Rather, it should be seen a piece that combines both the elements of the sacred and ...

Berlioz confronts Goethe and the devil
Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) was a revolutionary composer but the nature of his musical upheaval isn't clear until one takes a few facts into consideration. Between 1789 and 1820 France was in a state of perpetual tumult that left her literature and arts in stasis; while from across the channel, young English poets contemplated the French Revolution and new poetic impulses were born. Wordsworth's ...

Humperdinck - Hansel und Gretel (1981)9 reviews

Deutsche Grammophon, 2006

Enchanting
Before watching this, put aside your critical eye and relax so you can be carried along with the magic. It is, as the other reviewers have said, beautifully done. But you watch this opera to be enchanted - let it happen. It starts with the overture - the camera takes you to the beautiful opera house, past the poster announcing the opera and sweeps you along with the children who are flooding ...

Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 "From the New World"13 reviews
Antonin Dvorak, Sir Georg Solti, ...

Decca, 1990

No Homesick Symphony, This
Any great piece of music lends itself to different, sometimes radically different, interpretations. Dvorak's "New World" is a case in point, but especially so since music critics and others in the know have differing perspectives on the work. I've heard it called by some "the homesick symphony"; this, of course, implies that despite the use of native American musical material, the symphony ...

The Missing Music Box from Dr Caligari's Cabinet
Mike Birman's excellent review of this rare expressionist opera, several moths old already, was responsible for my ordering it. A few nights ago I finally watched it. His judgment of the music says everything I might want to say. The cinematography is another matter. Of course, with Georg Solti conducting, I knew I was getting a production with some miles on its chassis. I knew it had to be a ...

superlative
I have a friend -- a knowledgeable opera buff -- who once mildly embarrassed me when, in a discussion, I turned to him for (brief and conversational) support for my claim that Kiri Te Kanawa is one of the best of the recent (i.e., late 20th century) sopranos. He demurred evasively, saying there are so many sopranos. True enough, but Te Kanawa is good. And should you ever have any doubts about ...

A Beautiful Performance
I have seen Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) on several occasions and this recording by Sir Georg Solti has always brought back those wonderful performances. With the Mozart 250th birthday this January Gramophone magazine selected the best recordings of the opera and this Solti version was among the top choices. Sir Georg had a long association with the opera that dated back to the late 1930s ...
