Bach: Matthäus-Passion (St. Matthew Passion)20 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Otto Klemperer, ...

EMI Classics, 1989

One of the Great Recordings of the Century
We must not fall into the trap of comparing this recording to newer, historically-informed recordings. And to be absolutely straightforward, I am a follower of the historically-informed 'school' of music. My favorite St. Matthew Passions (I own about 8 or 9) include Herreweghe, Harnoncourt, and the new recording by the Dunedin Consort, all ulta-"HIP" (historically informed). But this ...

Bach: St. Matthew Passion4 reviews

EMI Classics, 2001

A Sublime Acquired Taste
There's nothing at all humble me can say to the connoisseur about this composition that's not a repetition of a repetition. To the newcomer, though, some words of advice: This is rightly considered one of, if not the best, of Bach's works. To the total newbie, Bach is rightly considered not one, but the best, of western composers. If you read my review you'll probably see why it's not a good ...

Favorite Moravian chorales from childhood.
Trombone choirs! I love them. Everytime I hear this recording, I see again the church of my childhood and the trombone choir standing out in the snow near the front steps playing Christmas chorales during the hour before the Christmas Eve service. Why were they out there a full hour before the service? If you wanted a seat, you had to arrive an hour early, because late comers sat in folding ...

Pavarotti's Opera Made Easy-My Favourite Opera For Children4 reviews

Decca, 1994

Fun, accessible opera for you and your child to enjoy
I bought this CD for my then 3 year old son. He loved it then because it was the "Bugs Bunny" music he was familiar with from the cartoons. He listened to it for awhile then we put it away. After he turned 4, he said to me one day -- let's listen to opera, and now we listen to this CD every day. This music gets his blood going; he struts around his room when he listens to this. And, he is ...

Emd Int'l, 2007

Amazing Value
I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!

This Classic of Vocal Jazz from the Bethlehem Records Catalog is Back in Print! Bethlehem Records was a New York-based independent record label active in the 1950s and '60s. It boasted an impressive array of jazz talent, including Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Mel Tormé, Dexter Gordon, and many others. Shout! Factory is proud to be reissuing some of the key Bethlehem albums. This ambitious Bethlehem album from 1956 was the ...

The Best Opera Album in the World...Ever!13 reviews
Ernest Blanc, Robert Massard, ...

Angel Records, 1999

Great for the amateur Opera listener
As a long time armchair Opera listener I'm shocked that I hadn't come across this album until recently. I'm not really an Opera connoisseur so my review is based on just the fact that I love Opera, but mostly by listening to arias or occasionally going to the Opera. This CD is quite comprehensive and offers a broad spectrum of aria's and some chorus's from several composers as well as the more ...

Handel: Julius Caesar4 reviews
George Frederick Handel, Ferdinand Leitner, ...

Opera D'oro, 1999

Better than five stars
This is a fantastic performance of one of Handel's greatest operas. How can you go wrong? This work stars four of the greatest German singers of the 20th century--Walter Berry as Caesar, Christa Ludwig as Cornelia, Fritz Wunderlich as Sextus and Lucia Popp as Cleopatra, not to mention that the Munich Philharmonic is conducted by Ferdinand Leitner. In a word this work is fantastic. For an Opera ...

The Very Best of Jon Vickers1 review
Ernest Blanc, Peter Glossop, ...

EMI Classics, 2005

A sampling of a great dramatic tenor
Jon Vickers was indomitable, a tenor cut from larger-than-life materials with a huge, unique voice and rock-solid character. That could make him both demanding and difficult, but EMI caught him in a fantastic period when he matched forces with Karajan. The two drew the best from each other, and for once Vickers totally gave himself over to a great condcutor's guidance. As a result we have ...

William Bolcom: Symphony No. 4; Session 11 review
George Berry, John Sant'Ambrogio, ...

New World Records, 1992

The clearest delivery of a text
William Bolcom's fourth Symphony is a wonderful piece of music. It is huge, diverse and wonderfully focused. The most notable thing about it is the setting of the text of Roethke's poem "The Rose", a description of a mystical experience of the integration of memory, present experience and maybe the whole universe. Bolcom's music is an extension of the poem, much more than just a setting. ...

Handel: Julius Caesar2 reviews
George Frederick Handel, Ferdinand Leitner, ...

Orfeo D'or, 1995

Unexpectedly good
I am a big fuss about "authenticity," so I didn't expect to enjoy this recording. I bought it just to waive it in the air as a horror example of a baritone in what was supposed to be a castrato role. And you know what? This recording is terrific. Yes, it's not authentic the way Jacobs' or Christie's recordings are, but the orchestra plays crisply, the singers tackle Handelian coloratura ...

One of the best Brahms Quintet Recordings available
Many do not know of this recording, which was made years ago. It is with George Silfies, former Principal Clarinet of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. This is one of the most musical sets of performances that is available, especially those performances that include the clarinet. I highly recommend this recording!

Wiener Staatsoper Live - Mozart: Don Giovanni / London, della Casa, et al
Karl Bohm, George London, ...

RCA, 1998

Mozart called Don Giovanni a dramma giocoso , which might be translated as "serious comedy." Karl Böhm emphasizes its seriousness--understandably, since Don G. is dragged down to Hell, alive and screaming, in the last scene. George London, too, underplays comedy; his Byronic Don is essentially a 19th-century interpretation. Mozart treated the Don's horrible punishment as a happy ending; despite diabolical charm, he was a menace to society. An ...
