No Dark, Sullen Winter Here!
These days anthologies of a given leading musician with assorted guests are commonplace, and we have seen them in rock, jazz, blues, and even country. But Yo-Yo Ma is a classical musician who ventures far into other realms, from his Silk Road Project to Bossa Nova and Tango. Here is a stunning winter holiday album (not all strictly Christmas songs) where Ma makes music with major artists from ...

A Festival of Carols in Brass31 reviews
Adolphe Adam, Anonymous, ...

Sony, 1991

A True Classic
This CD is all instrumental of well known traditional christmas carols. One of the pieces is a brass version of "Twelve Days of Christmas" is my absolute, all time favorite version. We have enjoyed ours for years and bought two more to give to family members so that (hopefully) when we visit them over the holidays we can listen to the good stuff!

The Time-Life Treasury of Christmas32 reviews
Adolphe Adam, Robert Allen, ...

Time Life Records, 2001

Good Memories
This CD has a good selection of traditional Christmas songs from the original artists that I remember from my childhood. You know, when it was still OK to say "Merry Christmas" to someone on the street. I played this CD and the other Time-Life Christmas CD all December long. I want my kids to have these songs as their Christmas memories as I do.

Messiah (George Frederick Handel) London Philharmonic Orchestra31 reviews
Handel, London Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, ...

Sparrow, 2002

For Every Day of Every Year
Many envision Christmas when they hear Messiah spoken in reference to Handel's classical craftsmanship. I, personally, envision all year round listening rapture. Handel's composition details various epics of Christ's life--His birth, ministry, crucifixion, resurrection and eventual Messianic millennial rule. You behold through Handel's orchestrated psalms, the Old Testament prophesies ...

Elegant Musical Blend of Jazz with Classical and Latin Thrown In
What a pleasant, enjoyable surprise! Such noted Jazz musicians like Dave Grusin, Chris Botti, and Lee Rittenour, are accompanied by legendary folk rocker James Taylor and classical music superstars like soprano Renee Fleming and virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell. For someone interested in sophisticated mood music, then this CD is absolutely a delight, with musical influences encompassing not only ...

Build Your Baby's Brain19 reviews

Wonderful stimulating music for baby
I am sorry for the previous review who said that intelligence is hereditary. If that is true, all mankind would have been doomed from the start. Intelligence is not hereditary, but rather a result of stimulation during infancy and birth. Sure, it isn't a guarantee that your child *will* become a genius if you attempt to educate them from birth, but there is no doubt that real educational ...

sooth for both unborn and newborn babies.
very soothing for the unborn baby (decreases in-utero kicking) and the newborn baby (increases between-feedings time at night). highly recommended for any newly minted parents out there.

Not A Music Critic ... But A Lover Of All Music ...
Let's not be too harsh regarding this CD. I purchased this as my first baby step into the classical genre and it absolutely made me fall in love with classical music and appreciate it in a way I never could when people tried to make me like it. It is such a wide variety of classical music and I find romance to be joyful, tragic, gentle, harsh & a complete roller coaster that I found all in this ...

The Most Relaxing Harp Album in the World... Ever!2 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, ...

Angel Records, 2005

Harp Music
Animal behaviorists have done some studies showing harp music is good at calming animals, especially cats. My cat was very skittish and unhappy as a result of very loud construction work next door and all other efforts to calm her down had not been totally successful. I got this and she (and I, if you must know) relaxed immediately. It is a beautiful sounding album. (And the bahaviorists have a ...

Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music46 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Samuel Barber, ...

Compendia, 1994

Exactly what I wanted
It's probably too much to say that this collection is for those who "hate" classical music. But I think it's safe to say that it is for people who are not serious aficionados. It provides classical tunes that most of us have heard but don't necessarily know the names of and presents them in a very palatable way. A diverse array of composers is represented and there is something here for just ...

Handel: Complete Violin Sonatas5 reviews
George Frederick Handel, Richard Egarr, ...

Harmonia Mundi Fr., 2005

Simply astounding
It is not without a sense of awe that I write these words. I believe Mr. Handel himself, had he been alive to hear this recording, would have been thoroughly delighted and not perhaps devoid of a tear or two. The grace and elegance with which these endearing sonatas are played is simply astounding. Both Manze and Egarr ought to be given knighthoods for this CD. It just has no peers. I find ...

A Sampler of Greatest Hits and Karaoke, Too
It really doesn't get much better than this CD. The primary benefit of the music is that it is a terrific selection of funny and touching arias from the classical genre. I am an opera lover and bought this for myself to memorize the words in English, as prompts when I listen to the pieces untranslated. I started listening to the CD while I was driving, and within a week had bought about a dozen ...

Joy To The World........a joy indeed!
This wonderful CD has everything to celebrate the great joy of the Christmas season. Recorded in the early 1970's it still sounds as fresh and timeless as it did way back then. The orchestrations are majestic and imaginative without being mushy or too symphonic in structure. The addition of the chorus in most of the carols is an added bonus. The singers and orchestra blend wonderfully without ...

Good Music at a Great Price
I bought this CD mostly for "Entry of the Gladiators," which everyone will recognize as classic circus music. The performance on this CD (by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops) is the best available version of Entry of the Gladiators. The rest of the CD offers mostly excerpts of classical music.

Handel: Messiah13 reviews
Thomas Paul, George Frederick Handel, ...

RCA, 2004

Inspired
For a work so frequently recorded, one might think, oh, whee, another reissue from the vaults. But among all the many excellent to splendid recordings of Handel's great oratorio, this has always been the one that spoke to me in the most immediate, humane, and beautiful voice. Small scale enough to clarify the orchestral and choral textures so often made heavy and sodden by huge numbers, on the ...
