A Fitting Memorial to a Great Artist -- and an Astonishing Bargain
That Jacqueline du Pré was a great musician, as well as an extraordinarily courageous human being, is beyond dispute. Though her recorded legacy, most of which is included in this inexpensive box, tends to be uneven, given the circumstances of a career tragically cut short by a debilitating illness, one must still regard every track as precious. There are many first-rate performances included ...

Mixed bag
I was excited about this cd and when it arrived I listened to it right away. What a disappointment. While du Pre was wonderful as always, de Peyer was not up to what I would have expected. His sound was ok overall and musically the performance was pretty good, but he had a tendency to spread whenever the dynamics approached the forte level in both the sonatas and the trio. I would recommend ...

Mozart's Adagios By Outstanding Musicians and Conductors
This 2-CD reasonably priced compilation has a number of the greatest adagios Mozart composed, performed by some of the greatest conductors and musicians in the world. Mozart was such a prolific composer of incredibly beautiful music in his short 35 years that one can easily imagine a second 2-CD set of his adagios in this series. The quality of the performances and the sound quality of the ...

I purchased this CD for my daughter, who loves music from this era. We love this product, a great collection of Ludwig's works. Highly recommended.

Nobody conducts his works with greater energy, insight or sensitivity than the composer. The recorded sound is magnificent, up to date in every way. To anyone who loves the music of Benjamin Britten, these recordings are mandatory!

TWO WONDERFUL RECITALS
I have owned and cherished for years the lps of Gerald Moore's de luxe farewell recital with de los Angeles, Schwarzkopf and Fischer-Dieskau. Now i'm happy to have it on cd, combined with the hommage recording for Moore's 70th birthday, with his three favorite singers as guests plus Janet Baker, Nicolai Gedda and star instrumentalists as Yehudi Menuhin, Jacqueline du Pré and Daniel Barenboim. Two ...

Surprise, there are more rarities here than chestnuts
EMI owns a wealth of classic recordings by Christa Ludwig, most of it constantly recycling. Here they do us a favor and duplicate a 4-CD set from French EMI, now out of print, entitled "Les introuvables de Christa Ludwig." I don't think this material is actually undiscovered, but since a good deal is form the Fifties and early Sixties, it's wonderful to have in back in print at a super-bargain ...

One of England's finest composers
It's safe to say that Ralph Vaughan Williams is one of the finest British composers alongside Holst, Elgar, Britten, and Bax. His nine symphonies are pure proof of his genius: they're lovely, haunting, lyrical, intense, hot-blooded, ethereal, etc. Maestro Andre Previn leads the London Symphony Orchestra & Chorus with perfect control; no one misses a step. Sound quality is first-rate, and booklet ...

Brahms Quintet is a Winner !!
This rendition of the Brahms Quintet with the Melos Ensemble and Gervase DePeyer (Clarinet solo)is wonderful. The Melos Ensemble and DePeyer have a long musical history and it shows. As a group they play well together, not as a string group and a solo clarinet. The group projects a warmth that is hard to describe. Highly recommended !!

Christa Ludwig sings Schubert Lieder
This is a reissue of Schubert lieder sung by Christa Ludwig at the height of her vocal powers during the 1960's. It deserves its place among the "Great Recordings of the Century." The singing is flawless, and includes some of the finest Schubert songs outside of the major cycles, including "An die Musik," "Gretchen am Spinnrade," "Ellens Gesang" (the original German text of Schubert's "Ave ...

Great!!!!
This is a great CD. The sound of the clarinet is somewhat different than I would usually prefer, but I seem to like it. Everything sounds great. The only thing is in the Arnold 2 mvt. I here a wrong note in the first two bars of the piece. Maybe it is a different version. Other than that very good!!! Strongly recommended!!! Great work!!

Historically and Artistically Significant CD
Time has been kind to the works of Benjamin Britten. A composer once thought to be so idiosyncratically British that his music would likely not survive his time has proven to be one of our more enduring artists in music. His song cycles - Les Illuminations for tenor and strings Opus 18, Serenade for tenor, horn and strings Opus 31, and Nocturne for tenor seven obbligato instruments and ...

More Re-issued Sills Appears On CD!
Well, finally we get the Wadsworth & friends recital LP re-issued on CD. I always loved that recording and am pleased to see it available again and that is why I'm giving this collection 5 stars. The rest of the material has been previously released in collection and complete form several times already and I do take issue with Deutsche Grammophon for that. They still have yet to release ...

the Maxfield Parrish of classical music!
Claude Debussy did not approve of his reputation as the impressionist of music. I'm sure he would approve even less, then, of being associated with the popular illustrator Maxfield Parrish, but the third movement of "Nocturnes," called "Sirenes," with wordless female vocals, puts me in a sun-dappled Parrish print with nymphs, framed by Greek pillars! This is a great bargain -- ALL of ...

Vaughn Williams' most interesting
While known for more pastoral pieces like "Fantasia on Greensleeves," "Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis," and "Lark Ascending," VW's symphony no. 4 is quite different. It's bullish and a brute. It grunts and growls, but that's not to say that it isn't a top notch piece of music. It was the first piece I ever heard by VW. I had fallen asleep and woke up to the driving fourth mvmt. playing ...

Great Set of Concertos
This is a marvelous set of mozart's wind concertos. De Peyer is an incredible musician who executes the clarinet concerto with sheer brilliance. Elegant and refined, this is the only recording of this concerto you'll ever need. The flute and bassoon concertos are remarkable as well. John Mack is a wonderful player who shapes the most beautiful phrases in the oboe concerto, and puts a touch of ...

Marvelous, especially the Mozart pieces
I actually bought this CD just for one piece, which is the Mozart Quintet in A. I had been haunted by that piece since (just as millions of TV watchers did) I heard it in the final episode of M*A*S*H, "Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen." This gentle yet melancholic piece was the cornerstone of Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester III's subplot -- he was endeavoring to get some Chinese POW's to play it ...
