Good for relaxing pregnant women
I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not ...

Jacqueline du Pre
Jacqueline du Pre fans should not be without this dvd. Christopher Nupen has put together a lasting tribute to a wonderful cellist. The biographical material is a retrospective of Jacquie's development as a musician "of rare and vanishing beauty". How poignantly evocative a statement!!! The dvd's culminating chapter is a complete rendition of the "Elgar Cello Concerto in E-minor". Daniel ...

Great Bargain of Elgar Masterworks and Forgotten Gems!
Like Sony's Stravinsky set, this Elgar set from EMI seems to want to challenge the Brilliant Classics label by providing lots of music for little money. This costs more than the Stravinsky, but you get 30 cds here as opposed to the 22 in the Stravinsky set. On the average, you are paying $2 a disc, as opposed to the seperate issues listed on Amazon that are going for about $20 in some instances. ...

A word about DuPre and the 'Elgar'
Why has one piece of music here, the Elgar Cello Concerto played by Jacqueline DuPre become so legendary? Of course it is the music itself. It has an overpowerful haunting deeply hypnotic feeling. Elgar wrote it after his recovery from a serious illness towards the end of the First War, and his thoughts were certainly on the suffering of life, and the inevitability of death. DuPre brings to ...

WONDERFUL!!!!!!
For me this is the best Nupen's film about Jackie. It has "Who was Jacqueline du Pré?", "Interlude with Johannes Brahms" a previously unpublished interview and "Remembering Jacqueline du Pré". It's more than 3 hours of music and words of people who knew her best to enjoy and remember the best cello player of all times. "Heart-Stopping arcchive footage" The Times

I THOUGHT I had heard these concertos,,,
UNTIL I was fortunate enough to have heard them performed by Jacqueline du Pre!!! ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!! Her superb playing, along with truly masterful interpretative skills, just "comes pouring out of the speakers!" Also, the orchestras were obviously truly inspired by these opportunities to perform and record with one of the greatest musicians of all time. The sound quality is excellent, ...

A must buy for the non-snobbish classical music fan.
I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!

Passion on strings
If you appreciate string instruments of any kind, you need this set. She is unequaled. Especially memorable is her playing on Beethoven's 'Ghost' piano trio, with Pinchas Zuckerman and Daniel Barenboim. You can also see that performance on the 'Remembering Jacqueline Du Pre' DVD.

(4.5/5 stars) This is a two-disc collection of musical works, in which the great cellist Jacqueline du Pre plays. The first disc consists of three cello concerti by three different composers: Dvorak (Romantic), Haydn (Classical) and Elgar (Romantic). Very good music, though it might leave you wondering what all the fuss is about. Not to worry: just pop in Disc Two to find out. The second disc ...

Elgar ... Cello Concerto + Sea Pictures.
Incredible ... incredible. You get the classic 'Cello Concerto in E minor' of Elgar, with du Pré (cello) and Barbirolli conducting the London Symphony Orchestra + 'Sea Pictures,' (also Elgar, of course) with Dame Janet Baker as mezzo-soprano. While those two works are classics (certainly the concerto), they are also treated with utter care and respect by certainly one of the best conductors ever, ...

Great performances, by one of the greatest cellists!
If there is one word for describing Jacqueline du Pre, it is MUSIC. She was the embodiment of music itself, because she gave all to the music she played. Some do not like her playing because it is too emotional. I echo the other reviewer's sentiments in that music is there to be played. Played with emotion. Music is about transmitting emotion to the listener, and du Pre was one of the best ...

Excellent listening
I purchased Volume 1 and 2 at the same time and in the short time I have had them I have listened to all selections at least once and some twice or more and my conclusion is that this is an excellet buy and addition to your music library. Selections in Vol 2 are less well known but all are excellent.

Forget what they SAY
Many of these prior reviewers complain that the abundance of operas and vocals degrate this compilation. They don't know what they're talking about. These genres are what made Classical music popular in it's age. In that era the forum for showcasing "classical music" was operas! Hence why most of these works are lost in the shuffle. Most of us know Mozart and Beethoven's compositions by ear ...

Defying the Odds
That this recording was made at all is a testament to the incredible inner emotional strength and sheer musical intensity of the irreplaceable cellist, Jacquelyn Dupre who, while not yet diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, had been badly suffering its effects for some time. After six months of leaving the cello in the case during her convalescence, she suddenly pulled it out during a ...

It would take a long, long time to write all that could be written about this historic CD. Here, you have three of the best musicians ever in their respective fields playing some of Beethoven's very best music. I now have a large classical music collection. This CD is one of the gemstones of my collection. I love it. Reference grade.

du pre did a great job on this recording. as soon as her bow first touches the strings...no....as soon as you hear her breathe BEFORE her bow touches the strings-this recording comes alive. for listeners who are aquainted with the playing style of jacquline du pre-you can almost see her moving while she plays if you close your eyes. i love this cd!

indulgent but intimate..............
But for the artists allowing themselves changes in tempo from one movement to the next, I tend to believe this recording would rate as the definitive interpretation. It depends on what one tolerates as artistic licence. I have the original LP, and the microphone placement and simple mixing of the day has resulted in warm and detailed Cello reproduction. The playing is accurate and engaging, and ...
