There Aren't Enough Stars...
Of the thousands of albums/cds I have purchased in my lifetime -- were I to have to pick only one to keep -- this would be it. The mark of the collection is an exquisite sensibility and technical excellence. In several of the pieces, you can feel as if your soul, rather than musical instruments, is being played -- but nothing mundane, boring, sophomoric, sentimental, or trite. The choice of ...

Concerts in a sailboat's cockpit
I discovered the first CD of these two when sailing in British Columbia this summer and played it over and over again when sipping wine under fine sunsets in the San Juan and Gulf Islands. There can be no better accompainment to the soft rocking of the boat and a fine wine. This second CD is as wonderful as the first. Pure lisening pleasure.

Bach Cantatas - Ton Koopman, Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir6 reviews

Kultur Video, 2007

How Could Bach Be Wrong?
That's the question I used to ask myself in my Lutheran childhood, decades ago, when my faith in Bach's religion began to fade away. But if I could spend eternity listening to Ton Koopman and his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir, perhaps Heaven wouldn't be so unbearable after all. If Jehovah were half as skillful a Creator as Bach was a Composer, perhaps we wouldn't be suffering the seven ...

Glorious pipes
New as an organ fan ? No mistake with this double Cd set. Registration is amazing and sounds like pure cristal. A simple joy. B.A.C.H. from Liszt is great, and more great moments. Organists play perfectly.

Classic Yo-Yo15 reviews
Johannes Brahms, Antonin Dvorak, ...

Sony, 2001

Awesome
While most people on this site see the "classic" in the title of the album as referring to classical music only, they are mistaken. Classic Yo-Yo refers to his style, not the genre into which his music choices fall. The list of tracks alone should have been a big enough clue that the music isn't all classical. Judging this album, or any album for that matter, on just its title is simply ...

A Dream Album
Almost 2 hours of "distilled" Bach- selections of the sweetest adagios by some of the world's best interpreters of the Baroque. Contains the most melodious extracts from the world's greatest masterpieces. The solos by flutist, Jean-Pierre Rampal have a dream-like quality of tonal purity: fitting preludes to choral motets by the Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne and the Orchestre de Chambre de ...

Simply the Best Christmas Album2 reviews

Erato, 2001

Simply the Best...
The minute I heard Thomas Hampson sing the first few notes of Adeste Fideles, I knew I had to have this album. It is a marvelous compilation of Classical Christmas favorites (excerpts from the Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli Christmas Concertos and The Nutcracker) and standard Christmas favorites, as well as some of the lesser heard Christmas gems. The vocal power on this 2 CD set is amazing as ...

Excellent Collection Performed Well
Yo-Yo Ma, performing Vivaldi on a period Cello with accompaniment from Ton Koopman, offers unique and engaging renditions of a number of Vivaldi pieces. The clarity and power of the overall sound on this compilation are amazing. I enjoy the tracks in the "middle" of the album (Concerto in B-flat Major for Cello, Strings and Basso continuo, RV 423/III. Allegro - Laudamus Te from Gloria, RV ...

pure genius
No instrument asks more from the soul of an artist as the cello does. Yo Yo Ma shows to be master of the instrument and his interpretations en technique are pure genius. Everyone should have this album in his (or hers of course) basic classical collection

YO YO MA'S SIMPLY BAROQUE IS SIMPLY...WONDERFUL !
The Baroque Period in Europe originated in the early 17th century and reached it's peak in the early 18th century. The English word "baroque" is translated from the Italian "barocco", meaning "bizarre". "Passionate" is probably more like it. Johann Sebastian Bach is the most celebrated of the Baroque composers, although George Frederick Handel and Antonio Vivaldi are also famous for their Baroque ...

Wea Apex Classics UK, 2006

The Best set I have overall
In my view the best set of Op4. Better than Pinnock/Preston/English Concert and the AAM/Egarr and Collegium Aureum/ Ewerhart. See my review of AAM/Egarr for more detail. I admit I have only 3 other sets but probably more than most. Light on its feet with nimble Church organ ( some mechanical noises )Nicely judged and played. I did not like it so much on first listening but it grew on me. No ...

Bach - St. Matthew Passion3 reviews
Jorg Durmuller, Cornelia Samuelis

Challenge Classics, 2006

A solid performance in the spirit it was meant to
Coming out on the heel of the Richter DVD, this outstanding performance gives the listener a sense of how the Passion might have sounded at St. Thomas church at Bach's time. Koopman is an austere artist whose interpretations of Bach's music, sacred and profane are steeped in the brisk rythms of the baroque dance mucic so the Richterian lingering over stanzas and the heavy footing cannot be found ...

#1 Bach Album1 review
No. 1 Bach Album

Decca, 2003

Beautiful collection
The album earns its title in many ways. Not only are the selections excellent, but the compilers of this collection chose performances from the late 1950's all the way to the late 90's. Well chosen.

Music to Cleanse the Palate
Though this recording is over six years old now, it remains one or the mainstays of everyone's collection of music meant to soothe and succor. Yo-Yo Ma is at his peak in this repertoire (and that is saying a lot about an artist who has successfully conquered just about every form of music for the cello!). The real delight of this collection for this listener is the decision to include ...

Alia Vox Spain, 2001

A paean to war and its victims
Thank you, Erik!* This CD is a noble example of the 17th Century Italian mood. Music of "battles and laments" suggests a mixture of the exhilarating and the sombre, and this collection takes you through just such a range. In the 17th Century, battles were celebrated with musical compositions, invoked in later wars to inspire soldiers with past glories. But war, of course, breeds as much grief ...

Bach: Sonatas for Viola da gamba und Cembalo6 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Ton Koopman

Alia Vox Spain, 2000

The best period recording of these works available
This has to be considered the definitive recording of the Bach gamba sonatas. Savall and Koopman are arguably the finest gamba and harpsichord players, respectively, in the world. The balance is slightly more harpsichord-heavy than is typically heard, but it allows both hands of the keyboard a chance at equality. Rather than be a viol accompanied by two keyboard lines, this is three ...

Challenge Classics, 2006

Buxtehude's Greatest Harpsichord Works in a Fine Recording
Ton Koopman begins his pathbreaking set of the complete works (opera omnia, in Latin) of Buxtehude with the composer's major compositions for harpsichord. If you like Bach's harpsichord works, you will definitely enjoy making Buxtehude's acquaintance in this fine recording. The largest and most famous piece included here is "La Capricciosa" (BuxWV 250)--a work based on an Italian dance. ...

A Fantastic Compilation
Most of the musical pieces in this compilation are from versions as they appear in various movies. This is Classical music from classic movies such as: Somewhere in Time, Schindler's List, English Patient, The Piano, Platoon, et al. But make no mistake; the music is what's really worth mentioning here. The title says it all. It claims to have "the most moving Classical music of all time," and ...

Great Classical Spectrum
These cd's are a great set of varied classical music. Pavane is my favorite. Additionally, Classical Chillout 2 offers theme music from Harry Potter and it is very well done.
