Great Music, Fine Performances
First off, the title of this album is misleading. Only one of the tracks stems from the high Renaisance. The rest span from the Reformation period to contemporary. All of them are liturgical, all of a certain calm and meditative style--which could be inferred from the subtitle: "Music for Inner Peace." But those are quibbles. The voices are excellent. The direction impeccable. The ...

The Best Compilation of the Man on 2 Discs! Great Sound Quality Too!
The title very aptly describes this great classical guitar album showcasing some of the best ever works of John Williams on 2 discs. The track selections are great as they span the centuries from the Baroque greats of Bach and Vivaldi to the modern day composers such as Stanley Myers and York. John even flirts with Blues and Jazz-style pieces and they actually sound very good. In addition, ...

The finest brass ensembles all on 1 album
I got this CD quite a while ago, and I still listen to it almost daily. Best at night in a candlelit room while it's raining sipping fine wine and reminising of the Renaissance festival! (wierd, I know. But that's just me) If you have an interest in this time period, you won't regret buying this CD.

Another Superb Set from Brilliant Classics
I can't praise highly enough the service to the music world that Brilliant Classics is doing by issuing the complete works of both well-known and lesser-known masters. Brilliant is perhaps best known for its complete sets of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, each priced at a little over $100 for close to 100 CDs in each set. I was previously familiar with the English Thomas Tallis (1505-1585), but ...

Absolutely glorious!
These musical performances are done with consummate artistry. The attack, the phrasing, the tempi, the interpretations are all presented with professionalism and first-rate musicianship. The organ and the setting, as well as choir and director, are associated worldwide with the very best in church music and this CD does not disappoint. Beloved church choral classics are all here and all ...

Tribute to the Legends
"The compositions featured on LEGENDS are absolutely essential to appreciating the Canadian Brass legacy." That about sums up this cd. Fans of the Canadian Brass will find no new compositions on this album but will find new recordings of old standards. I find I prefer some of the original recordings better, but that is only because they are engraved in my mind after years of playback. ...

The Greatest Hits of a Pioneer Ensemble
For years, Tallis Scholars have been quietly revolutionizing our recovery of sacred music. This is their "greatest hits" collection and quite great indeed. The Miserere which begins the set is alone worth the price of the set. The only fault with it is that it is so startling, so obviously genuine, that you will still be hearing it as you play through the rest of the set. The Scholars' ...

awesome value -- 5+ stars
I'm really enthusiastic about these CDs and booklet. I've had it for a few weeks now, in which I've explored Medieval and Renaissance music much more deeply than this little book and CD set. Yet I'm very glad I started with these. The selection of composers gives an excellent, broad sweep across several centuries. But the booklet contains one of the most informative essays I've found about ...

This first offering from British vocal group stile antico is an exceptional listening experience. Beautiful and soothing, the vocals on this CD are ouststanding. Highly recommended. This is a 5 star treat, ...

Light and shadows
Recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a true masterpiece in 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' in 1988. The title derives from a famous prayer by St. Francis of Assisi, and is inspired by liturgical music from (or derivative of) the Middle Ages and Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant. The music is ...

My best baroque CD
Over the years from time to time I bought some CDs with baroque brass ensemble music, always hoping it would be so fascinating as what I knew from my fathers PJBE vynil records. What I bought so far all are nice but also somewhat boring after short time. Unfortunately I never bought something from the PJBE until now, and this is the first time that a complete CD (and in this case even two of ...

Lofty music
Some of the earliest pieces of Christian music are the various kinds of chant. These hearken back to synagogue singing; there were various kinds of chant, including Gregorian, Old Roman, Mozarabic, Cistercian and Anglican chant. These tend toward the monophonic, singing with a single 'tune' or lone. They are generally without regular beats or set meters. However, in the Renaissance, ...

Sumptuous and mellow
The six men of the King's Singers present sweet and light-hearted madrigals of such English composers as Morley, Weelkes, Dowland, Wilbye and Byrd. The thirty five selections include "Now is the Month of Maying", "Though Philomela Lost Her Love", "Sing We and Chant It," the celebration of tobacco entitled "Come, Sirrah Jack, Ho!" and a host of other fa-la-la-la-la venues interspersed with ...

More sublime harmonies from Stile Antico
Their first cd - Music for Compline - introduced a young Renaissance ensemble capable of creating vocal harmonies of pristine beauty while obviously relishing the musical perfection they created with a joy bordering on ecstasy: perfect for deeply religious music. Their striking ability to convey the ecstatic religious vision is what made that initial release so memorable. Their second CD release ...

"Best Harpsichord Recording"
I have always loved the sound of the Harpsichord and for many years hearing poorly recorded or played Harpsichord this treasure is a must have. From the fine compositions to the good sound quality this CD is definately a keeper. Plenty of music for a moderate price as well.

Not until recently did I know about this guitar four. Hearing a number of their songs on internet classical radio, I decided I'd try this one. What a great surprise --- their arrangements of Copeland to Sousa to Praetorius are excellent and in taste. I'll be venturing into their other works.

The King's Singers Overcome Obsticles of Byrd and Tallis
William Byrd. Thomas Tallis. Both were common copmosers in the Renaissance era that were sure to offer up a challenge to anyone who dared. The King's Singers were up there to challenge the music of Byrd and Tallis. What an interesting choice of composers too. Byrd was known to be the most respected composer of his time in England (1543-1623), which may also be the reason he got away with ...
