Children's Favorites3 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Paul [composer] Dukas, ...

Vox (Classical), 2000

A Wonderful Introduction to the Classics
With total playing time clocking in at 78:04 minutes of music, you'll be paying about 6-cents/minute, which is a better bargain than long distance phone calls, and often more rewarding! This disc is far superior than most other "Classics for Kids"-type recordings I've sampled for a number of reasons: 1) This album was expertly engineered. The production quality on this disc is first-rate from ...

Switched-On Bach38 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Wendy Carlos

East Side Digital, 2001

Just as I remember
I first heard this groundbreaking recording when it was first released and it turn me on to music of the baroque period. As an 8 year old piano student, I took it to my teacher and told her "I want to learn how to do THIS!" While she did not get the import of Wendy (then Walter) Carlos' work, she did help me learn some of the more accessible pieces and I went on to major in music. This ...

Mozart Edition: Complete Works (170 CD Box Set)74 reviews
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Bruce Abel, ...

Brilliant Classics, 2005

The best Cosė fan tutte on disc
In is hard to justify spending $120 for one opera, but if you do buy this Mozart box set you will be rewarded by a delightful Cosė fan tutte. This live recording succeeds primarily because of the deft baton of Sigiswald Kuijken. He sets what invariably seems to be the perfect tempo and then lets the singers run with it. He allows a gentle rallentando when sections of music change, but otherwise ...

Bach Edition: Complete Works (155 CD Box Set)50 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Andrew Manze, ...

Brilliant Classics, 2006

so far, definitely so good
I have listened to, thus far, 69 discs and have enjoyed all but one of the performances, especially the Mass in B Minor, Magnificat, Goldberg Variations, The Art of Fugue, and to my surprise in spite of unfavourable reviews elsewhere, the Sacred Cantatas. I found the choral singing and orchestral playing of The Sixteen to be very moving and beautiful. Given the cost of this complete set, I feel I ...

Mendelssohn: Piano Concertos11 reviews
Felix Mendelssohn, Neville Marriner, ...

Sony, 1990

A Legendary Recording
There are so many things that could be said about this recording. It deserves a spot on any top 50 classical recordings list. The piece and the performance are both 5 stars. Mendelssohn is an undeservingly neglected composer. He is ususally thought of as an orchestral composer, since his command of the orchestra is parallel to Mozart's. But in his own time, he was as great a pianist as ...

The Story of Bach1 review
Johann Sebastian Bach, Jean-Joseph Cassanea de Mondonville, ...

Vox (Classical), 1995

Excellent!
We are using this series of CDs in our homeschool music program - they are fantastic! We especially love this one about Bach - what an awesome man! The story of his life is told in a way that is very interesting and holds the children's attention while also using various pieces of his music in the narration. It is done VERY well! My children are gaining a tremendous amount of knowlege and ...

Beethoven Edition: Complete Works (85CD Box Set)7 reviews
Ludwig van Beethoven, Florian Prey, ...

Brilliant Classics, 2007

Glorious Practicality
There's hardly a music lover out there who doesn't already have multiple recordings of the Beethoven symphonies, quartets, concertos, etc., performances from which we choose according to mood, frame of mind-- to any number of reasons. So why not add another set of each? It never hurts to have another take on this infinitely interpretable music, and have it on the cheap. But wait! There's more! ...

Gabrieli · Monteverdi · Vivaldi - Venetian Church Music / Taverner Consort, Choir & Players · Andrew Parrott8 reviews
Giovanni Gabrieli, Claudio Monteverdi, ...

EMI Classics, 2001

exceptional tone quality
When I purchased this recording, I had not yet had the pleasure of owning an Andrew Parrott/Taverner Consort recording. I was so impressed! Andrew really excercises an understanding of this genre, an understanding that I haven't often seen. In particular I was quite pleased with this rendintion of Gabrieli's "In ecclesiis" (although the Bass, I don't know his name, is too lacking in volume). ...

Bach for Babies7 reviews
Marc Johnson [double bass], Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

Philips, 1999

Classical, Jazz and Opera Bach all in one
This is a versatile collection in terms of composition, performance and layout. Comparing to most of CD with classical selections for baby, this edition is more nutritious and rich on musical experience. Genre wise, the piano solo, concerti, chamber and opera are all included. Performance wise, it is absolute a feast -- Sir Neville Marrier conducting Academy of St. Martin-in-the fields, Jazz ...

Shostakovich: 24 Preludes and Fugues, Op. 8713 reviews
Dmitry Shostakovich, Konstantin Scherbakov

Naxos, 2001

A Twentieth Century Piano Masterwork
Dmitry Shostakovich (1906-1975) is best-known for his symphonies and for his difficult political life in the former Soviet Union. Between 1950-1951, while his work was under a performance ban, Shostakovich composed a work for solo piano, the "24 Preludes and Fugues" Op. 87, which is remarkable for its intimacy and devotion to the art of pure music. It is one of the great piano works of the ...

Glorious Pipes: Organ Music Through the Ages3 reviews
Johannes Brahms, Dietrich Buxtehude, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2004

Glorious pipes
New as an organ fan ? No mistake with this double Cd set. Registration is amazing and sounds like pure cristal. A simple joy. B.A.C.H. from Liszt is great, and more great moments. Organists play perfectly.

Music for Two (Bonus DVD)17 reviews
Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, ...

Sony, 2004

A Must Have
These two really sound good together. If you're not so impressed with the music when you first hear it (I don't know if that's possible), check out the DVD that comes with it. You will gain such an appreciation for the music that's being played. Watch out for the guy making the banjo jokes. This CD is really an incredible work, I can't say it enough. Very relaxing music.

Jazz Sebastian Bach6 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Pierre Michelot, ...

Decca, 2001

I've been looking for this for a LONG time...
I loved listening to this with my Dad in the 60's and 70's and had always wanted a "clean" copy of my own. I have the original LP, but the pops and hisses now mar the recording and let's face it, a CD is a lot easier to listen to. This is NOT the title or album cover of the LP issued in the US, but IS the same recording as the "Bach's Greatest Hits" LP released here in 1963 (or 1964) with the ...

Bach - Anna Magdalena Bach Notebook (highlights) / Hunt-Liberson, McGegan6 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, C.P.E. Bach, ...

Harmonia Mundi Classical Express, 2001

Anna Magdalena Notebook-- a treasure trove of Baroque music
This is music for contemplating number and time and not realize you are doing that. These pieces from Anna Magdalena Bach's notebook are a significant part of the history of western culture, and the music is brilliant, lucid, and passionate. Just as, I suppose, Bach's wife was. Played on harpsichord and clavichord, the work-- not all by Bach-- seems rigourously, mysteriously modern, and the ...

Bach: French Suites / Angela Hewitt9 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Angela Hewitt

Hyperion UK, 1995

Elegant Artistry
Recorded early in Angela Hewitt's Bach cycle, the popular French Suites (along with the "Little Preludes" and other two more dynamic virtuoso pieces) take a step back from the more serious and complex fugal compositions of Bach and settle into the restrained elegance of the courtly and rustic dances of the era. Although Bach never titled these works as "French," the suites take much of their ...

Christopher Parkening plays Bach16 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Francois Couperin, ...

EMI Classics, 1990

Pinnacle
I can't over-exaggerate the impact this album had on me when my Dad played it for me when I was about 6. It encouraged me to become a guitarist, and hearing it was my first truly profound musical experience that I can remember. I love all kinds of music, but nothing has touched me like this album in the 19 years since then. Parkening's reading of Bach arranged for the classical guitar is ...
