Grieg: Lyric Pieces / Emil Gilels21 reviews
Edvard Grieg, Emil Gilels

Deutsche Grammophon, 1997

Superb historical achievement!
Emil Gilels temperament has always been at least to my mind extremely cold and even analytical. His powerful phrasing is first rate, who can deny it? . However, he recorded for the posterity two emblematic works; this album and Brahms Piano Quartet Op. 25 with Amadeus Quartet(see my review). Gilels was at top form that historical evening with these Grieg pieces. This miniaurist composer ...

English Renaissance Music5 reviews
John Bull, William Byrd, ...

Sony, 1990

The finest brass ensembles all on 1 album
I got this CD quite a while ago, and I still listen to it almost daily. Best at night in a candlelit room while it's raining sipping fine wine and reminising of the Renaissance festival! (wierd, I know. But that's just me) If you have an interest in this time period, you won't regret buying this CD.

EMI Classics, 2008

Excellent for the money
All of the EMI's series are inexpensive and worthwhile. If you don't mind short selections and exerpts, this series is a good, inexpensive way to get into classical music.I have the whole set,or most of them.

Grieg: Lyric Pieces (Performed on Grieg's Piano)14 reviews
Edvard Grieg, Leif Ove Andsnes

EMI Classics, 2002

Sensitive modern pianism
Borrowing a phrase from the contemporary political philosopher Fukuyama a case can be made that the world of classical piano music has reached "the end of history". This notion is based on the often heard idea that it only takes two clicks to get superior performances of any piece worth recording at home and that this part of the universe has reached a state of completion. Add to that the ongoing ...

The Most Relaxing Piano Album in the World...Ever!13 reviews
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

EMI Classics, 2001

Beautiful piano music!
This is simply an exquisite collection of beautiful piano pieces. I am very satisfied with this purchase. I can read while listening to this music-call it background music...maybe, but even when you're doing something else-the music is there...it does not intrude, but it doesn't get lost either. I am having a hard time explaining this. I wanted music to relax and enjoy. I got just that with this ...

Lullabies: A Songbook Companion12 reviews

Essay, 1997

Marvellous cd, enchanting music
Our whole family loves this cd. I am continually charmed and refreshed by the subtlety, taste and musicianship that has gone into these arrangements of well- and lesser-known gems. Apart from the joy of the simple yet perfect chordal progressions, listen to the warm, caressing tone imparted by the low bass notes in the piano in many of the tracks. The pace is so wonderfully leisurely, there ...

Music of Hikari Oe, Vol. 13 reviews
Hikari Oe, Hiroshi Koizumi, ...

Denon Records, 1995

Simply Amazing
I first heard of Hikari Oe many years ago when he was featured on a news program. I was so moved by his story, that I went out to buy his CD. I fell in love. I am so amazed that this man who can do nothing for himself, can write such beautiful music. He is simply amazing. This is a wonderful cd from a wonderful man. Don't miss it!!!!

Chopin: The Piano Works17 reviews
Frederic Chopin, Vladimir Ashkenazy, ...

Decca, 1997

Best investment to make
In my opinion, this is the apex of classical music. You will not find a better CD for Chopin or any piano recordings. There may be plenty of comparable CDs, but nothing can claim to surpass this. Although some pieces are not as good as those by other artists, Ashkenazy's interpretations of Chopin are the best I've ever heard. Add in his amazing technical performance and you've got some sublime ...

Debussy: The Complete Piano Music6 reviews
Claude Debussy, Gordon Fergus-Thompson

Asv Living Era, 2004

Debussy with a difference!
Do not let the dismissive review below make you dismiss this amazing and breath taking complete set. Like his Scriabin recordings, Gordon Fergus-Thompson works wonder with the well known piece like Clair de Lune, Arabesque and Reverie, and breathes new life into the music by his keen sense of tonal colours and delicacy. When it comes to impressionist music, no pianists can match Richter, who ...

Ballad For Edvard Grieg3 reviews
Edvard Grieg, Berliner Philharmoniker, ...

EMI Classics, 2007

Outstanding Performance Disappointing CD
Imagine my surprise when I received this CD, and after removing the shrink wrap discovered that 9 of the 10 tracks or 2 of the 3 works on this CD were re-issues. The Piano Concerto in A minor Op 16 is a reissue from 2002 and the 6 Lyric Pieces were originally issued on a wonderful disc in 2001. Until I looked at the notes inside the jewel case I thought these were new performances. Shame on ...

Best Classics 100 Volume 21 review
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Jacqueline du Pré, ...

Angel Records, 2006

Excellent listening
I purchased Volume 1 and 2 at the same time and in the short time I have had them I have listened to all selections at least once and some twice or more and my conclusion is that this is an excellet buy and addition to your music library. Selections in Vol 2 are less well known but all are excellent.

Best Romantic Classics 1002 reviews
Han-Na Chang, Jacqueline du Pré, ...

EMI Classics, 2008

Soothes the Soul
Two weeks ago, I was sitting in a bookstore when the strains of music came over the sound system and distracted me from my reading several times. But this distraction wasn't Johnny Paycheck's "Take This Job and Shove It" (vile), "The Streak," or "Honey, I Miss You." (Oh, the bile)! This is one of those DVD's you don't have to think about if you have any inclination to the classical. It was a ...

Debussy & Ravel: Piano Works - Samson Francois (6 CD's)4 reviews
Samson Francois, Claude Debussy, ...

EMI Classics, 2004

Yesterday Francois would be celebrating his eighty-two anniversary
Samson Francois figure has evidenced slow but increasing enhancement through the years. His notable pianism, aristocratic approach and refined phrasing are some of his virtues. If you still do not know about this legendary artist, no itý s the time for you to convince by yourself about the supreme level occupied by him. When he left us in 1970 at his 46, he had so much to give. The musical ...

For My Love1 review
Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, ...

Decca, 2002

Overall A Great Selection of Music
These "set-your-mood" genre of CD's is by no means an introduction to classical music. I myself have complete works of several composers, but I still enjoy listening to these kinds of CD's. The selection of music is excellent and adheres closely to what the title suggests. Both the composers and the artists are able to fully bring out the dream-like quality in the music. I particularly like ...
