Chopin: Favorite Piano Works14 reviews
Frederic Chopin, Vladimir Ashkenazy

Decca, 1996

Why are you waiting?
Ashkenazy is one of the titans of Chopin. Davidovich and Arrau are the other two. They're all you need. Get Davidovich for the concertos, (inlcuding the Krakowiak--Op 14), Arrau for the nocturnes and a few micscellaneous pieces. Ashkenazy handles everything else. (Btw, Ashkenazy vs. Davidovich re. the impromptus is a toss up. But since the impromptus aren't on this disc, you can make that ...

Bach Edition: Complete Works (155 CD Box Set)50 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Andrew Manze, ...

Brilliant Classics, 2006

so far, definitely so good
I have listened to, thus far, 72 discs and have enjoyed all but one of the performances, especially the Mass in B Minor, Magnificat, Goldberg Variations, The Art of Fugue, and to my surprise in spite of unfavourable reviews elsewhere, the Sacred Cantatas. I found the choral singing and orchestral playing of The Sixteen to be very moving and beautiful. Given the cost of this complete set, I feel I ...

The Most Soothing Lullabies In The Universe3 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, ...

Denon Records, 2004

Really great CD for long car rides!
This is a lovely CD for everyone. It is sincerely mellow with few exceptions and makes a soothing sound for the car (especially for long car rides). On the first of 2 cd's, the set up is a little odd. The first 2 songs are mellow and relaxing (just enough to help put a baby to sleep) then the 3rd song comes on like a thunderbolt and will wake the child if your not careful.

Beethoven Edition: Complete Works (85CD Box Set)7 reviews
Ludwig van Beethoven, Florian Prey, ...

Brilliant Classics, 2007

Glorious Practicality
There's hardly a music lover out there who doesn't already have multiple recordings of the Beethoven symphonies, quartets, concertos, etc., performances from which we choose according to mood, frame of mind-- to any number of reasons. So why not add another set of each? It never hurts to have another take on this infinitely interpretable music, and have it on the cheap. But wait! There's more! ...

The Most Relaxing Classical Music in the Universe9 reviews
Johann Pachelbel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, ...

Denon Records, 2003

Greatly enjoy!
I first developed a taste for this music a number of years ago when my daughter started playing in the orchestra. The reason I made this purchase however, was because I have a great deal of difficulty with anxiety and I was looking for ways to find help. I love these CDs. It helps so much to sit and close my eyes and enjoy the music. The CDs are full of beautiful music.

The World's Favorite Piano Music13 reviews
Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, ...

RCA, 1992

My favorite CD!
Van Cliburn is a master pianist, and this CD is pure listening enjoyment. I generally am not into clasical music, but this is fun. His working fingers convince me that they are not working. They are dancing, and they are having great fun. WONDERFUL!!

Romance of the Violin59 reviews
Joshua Bell, Giacomo Puccini

Sony, 2003

Drippingly romantic!
I played this during my dinner party this week and several of my guests commented on how beautiful the music was! It is a lovely collection and has not one single track that I want to skip when it plays!

There Aren't Enough Stars...
Of the thousands of albums/cds I have purchased in my lifetime -- were I to have to pick only one to keep -- this would be it. The mark of the collection is an exquisite sensibility and technical excellence. In several of the pieces, you can feel as if your soul, rather than musical instruments, is being played -- but nothing mundane, boring, sophomoric, sentimental, or trite. The choice of ...

Bach
Surely you don't need me to review the guy. You know who he is, you've heard his music, and I hope you own some. So let me turn the podium over to a cat named Picasso, and you can read into that whatever you wish. She's in a chair, near the CD player. She has entered the room specifically for the music. Her eyes are squinted, almost but not quite shut, little face concentrating on just how ...

Beethoven's Wig, Vol. 2: More Sing-Along Symphonies14 reviews
Beethoven's Wig

Rounder / Umgd, 2004

More Great Fun
Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

Simply Baroque8 reviews
Yo-Yo Ma, Johann Christoph Bach, ...

Sony, 2003

YO YO MA'S SIMPLY BAROQUE IS SIMPLY...WONDERFUL !
The Baroque Period in Europe originated in the early 17th century and reached it's peak in the early 18th century. The English word "baroque" is translated from the Italian "barocco", meaning "bizarre". "Passionate" is probably more like it. Johann Sebastian Bach is the most celebrated of the Baroque composers, although George Frederick Handel and Antonio Vivaldi are also famous for their Baroque ...

The Most Relaxing Classical Album In the World Ever, Volume II10 reviews
Yehudi Menuhin, Jacqueline Du Pre, ...

EMI Classics, 2003

A must buy for the non-snobbish classical music fan.
I bought Vol. 1 of this series and was quite satisfied, but I have to say I'm more than satisfied with this one. If you can just mellow out and enjoy some great pieces, you'll love this CD. #15 on Disc 2 is almost worth the price alone!

Satie: Piano Works13 reviews
Erik Satie, Aldo Ciccolini

EMI Classics, 1992

Picasso in sound
Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Eric Satie were drinking buddies; it shouldn't be surprising that their work, though in different media, should bear striking similarities. This CD set replaces a very badly abused vinyl recording from the 1960s. No one plays Satie like Aldo Ciccolini. I do wish the Parade had been included, Satie wrote the music, Cocteau the libretto and Picasso did the sets and ...

Debussy for Daydreaming21 reviews
Claude Debussy, André Previn, ...

Philips, 1995

Life Is But A Dream...
This CD is just pure magic. I know that is such a cliche' thing to say, but it really is. Of course, it really won't appeal to those people who are into EXTREME LIVING...whatever the hell that means, because to me, extreme living is living close to the soul, close to the spirit, close to the Invisible Source that makes and creates all things in and out of Itself. Debussy was a composer who ...

Not A Music Critic ... But A Lover Of All Music ...
Let's not be too harsh regarding this CD. I purchased this as my first baby step into the classical genre and it absolutely made me fall in love with classical music and appreciate it in a way I never could when people tried to make me like it. It is such a wide variety of classical music and I find romance to be joyful, tragic, gentle, harsh & a complete roller coaster that I found all in this ...

The Most Relaxing Piano Album in the World...Ever!13 reviews
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

EMI Classics, 2001

Beautiful piano music!
This is simply an exquisite collection of beautiful piano pieces. I am very satisfied with this purchase. I can read while listening to this music-call it background music...maybe, but even when you're doing something else-the music is there...it does not intrude, but it doesn't get lost either. I am having a hard time explaining this. I wanted music to relax and enjoy. I got just that with this ...

BRAHMS: Edition - Complete Works1 review
Bo Skovhus, Gunther Leib, ...

Brilliant Classics, 2008

Good budget set.
Alright, I'll admit upfront that I haven't gotten through this entire set yet (or even close to it) but I've sampled enough to where I feel I'm able to give a good opinion. Orchestral music: Inconsistent. The Violin Concerto is the worst of the bunch, with slow tempi and a soloist who takes irritating artificial pauses (ands make it sound like she's barely able to play the piece). The first ...
