Bach
Surely you don't need me to review the guy. You know who he is, you've heard his music, and I hope you own some. So let me turn the podium over to a cat named Picasso, and you can read into that whatever you wish. She's in a chair, near the CD player. She has entered the room specifically for the music. Her eyes are squinted, almost but not quite shut, little face concentrating on just how ...

The Story of Bach2 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Jean-Joseph Cassanea de Mondonville, ...

Vox (Classical), 1995

Excellent!
We are using this series of CDs in our homeschool music program - they are fantastic! We especially love this one about Bach - what an awesome man! The story of his life is told in a way that is very interesting and holds the children's attention while also using various pieces of his music in the narration. It is done VERY well! My children are gaining a tremendous amount of knowlege and ...

Chanticleer: Magnificat (A Capella Works by Josquin, Palestrina, Titov, Victoria, and Others)10 reviews
Chanticleer, William Cornysh, ...

Teldec, 2000

Gorgeous choral voices surrounding you
I hesitated to buy this disc until a friend told me he knew one of the members of Chanticleer; then again I also had nothing like it in my collection. The sound is rich and resonant. You should know it is recorded realistically, in a variety of soundfields, i.e. sometimes there is a processional from front to rear, sometimes choruses on upper left/right, or from all around you, depending on the ...

Monteverdi - Vespers of 1610 (Vespro della Beata Vergine) / Chandler, R. Croft, Atkinson, Numura, Boston ...14 reviews
Claudio Monteverdi, Boston Baroque, ...

Telarc, 1997

Mary must be pretty pleased
I only recently discovered the work of Pearlman and the Boston Baroque through their Messiah which is absolutely stunning. So, I was eager to pick this piece up, especially after listening to the brief audio clips on the site. I have a bit of early music (des Pres, Tallis, some madrigals and the like) and a lot more baroque. What I really like about the Vespers is that they demonstrate the ...

Requiem & Magnificat/Rutter, Cambridge Singers32 reviews
John Rutter, Cambridge Singers, ...

Collegium, 2000

Why I Like Tthis CD
This is an excellent CD. I had an ulterior motive for ordering it, however. I sing in a local Choral Society and we are performing it this coming weekend. I wanted the CD to follow along at home and get my part down a little better. I do very much enjoy John Rutter's music and the Cambridge Singers are very good.

Bach: Greatest Hits10 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Christian Pezold, ...

Sony, 1994

Teeming with classics
I purchased this for track #10, which I'd happened to hear on the radio...it stayed in my head until I tracked down the CD. I have a relatively basic working knowledge of classical music, so this long playing collection was an excellent and surprising introduction to several of Bach's diverse works...both well known and more obscure. Certainly a worthwhile addition to your classical collection.

Used for Private Prayer after Communion
At weekday Masses I usually play a meditative piece after Communion to accompany private prayer. This collection draws people into prayer like few others I have heard.

Arvo Part

Ecm Records, 1999

Amazing disc--and there is linkage between Part's Te Deum and Bruckner's 9th symphony
The other reviewers have it 100% right on this one--this is one amazing disc. The Te Deum is a masterpiece, written in our times, which will likely withstand the test of time much as any of the great music from the past. But here's the real reason why I'm writing this review. While I have no reason to believe that this was Arvo Part's intention, the Te Deum uniquely compliments one of the ...

The Tallis Scholars Sing Thomas Tallis4 reviews
Thomas [Composer] Tallis

Gimell UK, 2004

The Tallis Scholars do their namesake proud
In the last couple of years, the Tallis Scholars have been compiling their sizeable recording output into attractive two-disc editions. Here, they've collected a large number of their interpretations of their namesake, Thomas Tallis. Tallis (c. 1505-1585) is, of course, one of the giants of Renaissance music, and he was certainly the greatest English composer of liturgical music between John ...

Sony, 1992

Bach and Handel Treats
The unfortunate thingÑif anything can be said to the contrary about this collectionÑis that is an older recording. As far as authenticity, what was available in the days of Bach and Handel to perform their music, and what they may have had in mind as the formidable way of presenting it to the publicÑas well as to the heavensÑmay be quite different things. Viewed in this way, authenticity may ...

NOT OF THIS WORLD
Tabula Rasa: Silentium : This music is not of this world. I worship/pray in silence while driving with this music on with a palm facing the windshield. The haunting, surreal background...the two main violins mournfully cries out aloud...yet so beautiful...my heart cries with them.

Gloria: Music of Praise & Inspiration3 reviews
Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

Telarc, 1998

Glorious
If I had to choose one conductor to compile exerpts from the greatest masses and works in choral literature and history, I would only bestow that duty to Robert Shaw and his choruses. Once again he displays his uncanny ability to not only choose beautiful music but also perform it in a spellbinding manner. Even with the pieces the average listener has heard or performed, such as Vivaldi's ...

a voice teacher and early music fan
ENGLAND'S MOST FAMOUS CHURCH CHOIR PRESENTS AN EXCELLENT COMPILATION! This two CD two hour thirty-two minute recording was releaed by EMI Classics in July, 2009. It includes a wide variety of mostly sacred music that offers motets, ancient and modern, well-known psalms and favorite hymns and pieces made recognisable through their association with key English historical events. The Music of St. Paul's Cathedral10 reviews
Timothy Jones, Hubert Parry, ...

Hyperion UK, 2000

Excellent Cathedral Organ & Choral
This selection of recordings by The Choir of St. Paul's Cathedral contains pieces representative of traditional Anglican musical liturgy. The technical aspects of this production on compact disk seem to be outstanding, but beware that the original recordings were in some cases less than stellar. Another reviewer points out that on some tracks the lyrics sung by the choir are overwhelmed by the ...

Buxtehude: Complete Organ Music5 reviews
Dietrich Buxtehude, Walter Kraft

Vox (Classical), 2004

BEAUTIFUL AS WELL AS REFERENCE
As one completely devoted to the organ works of Bach (and of others), I highly recommend this recording. I have loved Buxtehude's organ works for many years, and had certain recordings on LP (old Mercury Living Presence of Alf Linder and the LP of Walcha's "Orfelmeister vor Bach,") which are my favorites. Neither, however, is available on CD. While Walter Kraft is not Helmut Walcha or Alf ...

Vivaldi: The Great Choral Masterpieces4 reviews
Antonio Vivaldi, Vittorio Negri, ...

Philips, 1998

Brilliant introduction to Vivaldi's Choral Masterpieces
I bought this CD initially to get the recording of Nulla in mundo pax sincera, which I had heard recently. I knew nothing of Vivaldi's choral works previous to that, and I must say I'm glad I did buy it. All the choral works are brilliant, really uplifting, a must buy.
