The Best of Kathleen Battle6 reviews
Gustave Charpentier, Gaetano Donizetti, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2004

A Great Coloratura Soprano
Coloratura sopranos are a dying breed today. The era of Lily Pons and Beverly Sills is long gone and opera audiences favor a more "heavy" coloratura sound- or at least a full lyric one, such as the voice types of Kiri Te Kenawa, Carol Vanness and Renee Fleming. Kathleen Battle was in many ways an artist who payed homage to the coloratura queens of olden days. Only Natalie Dessay, of late, ...

Mad about The Classics5 reviews
Mischa Maisky, Johann Sebastian Bach, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1993

GREAT compilation!!!
I can only wish that popular music (rock, rap, dance) compilers could take a hint from this album, and include only the GOOD songs. This has all of the well-known classical songs. I really wanted to get the title of a particular classical song, and I looked for 4 weeks on the Internet until I remembered I had this album. I put it in, and the second song, "O Fortuna", was it.

Fritz Dolezal, Franklin Cohen, ...

Decca, 2001

Pretty good
I am not much into classical music.. Read about Mozart and wanted to make sure I listen to one of the all time classics. Though I may not be qualified enough to review a classic, On a whole it was a pleasant experience for me and a good add on to my car, especially when alone.. The quality of the CD content was good too..!! 4/5

Kiri13 reviews
Kiri Te Kanawa, Giacomo Puccini, ...

EMI Classics, 2001

Brava Kiri! Brava!
Earlier this evening, I had a unique privilege in seeing Dame Kiri Te Kanawa live here in Edinburgh at Usher Hall and truly it was a captivating experience, I booked the ticket six months ealier for I know it would be sold out. Dame Kiri has always been my favourite soprano (and of course Renee Fleming), and the moment she sang her first note, it was electrifying. Even the moment she walked on ...

Olivier Messiaen: Turangalila-Symphonie18 reviews
Olivier Messiaen, Myung-Whun Chung, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1992

Amazing!
This recording of the Turangalila Symphonie, which bears Messiaen's imprimatur, surely rests with the finest achievements of the century. The work is one of astonishing complexity, more akin to a fantastic piano concerto or showcase for the ondes martenot than a symphony. Cast into ten movements, the work seeks to portray, in Messiaen's own words, "[an] all at once love song, hymn to joy, time, ...

Philips, 1999

Beautiful music
This is my second copy of this CD, I burned the first one out!! Andrea Bocelli has a very gorgeous voice that is a gift from above. His voice is not affected or braggadoccio but naturally magnificent. I could and do start my day listening to this spiritually uplifting CD almost everyday. It is a wonderful way to get off to a pleasant peaceful start, but also a nice way to come home in the ...

The Best Opera Album in the World...Ever!12 reviews
Ernest Blanc, Robert Massard, ...

Angel Records, 1999

Great for the amateur Opera listener
As a long time armchair Opera listener I'm shocked that I hadn't come across this album until recently. I'm not really an Opera connoisseur so my review is based on just the fact that I love Opera, but mostly by listening to arias or occasionally going to the Opera. This CD is quite comprehensive and offers a broad spectrum of aria's and some chorus's from several composers as well as the more ...

Des Canyons Aux Etoiles4 reviews
Messiaen, Oprf, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2003

From the Canyons to the Stars -- Messiaen's spiritual vision
Olivier Messiaen must certainly have been the most idiosyncratic of late 20th century composers. Two preoccupations dominated his music -- his Catholicism, and his love of birds. These came together in the figure of St. Francis, to whom he dedicated his last major work. "Des Canyons aux Etoiles..." is his penultimate major work, commissioned for the U.S. Bicentennial. In searching for a ...

Art of Cecilia Bartoli (Dig)10 reviews
Cecilia Bartoli

Decca, 2002

Sampler of Bartoli's recordings over the years
Soprano Cecilia Bartoli garnered international acclaim with her first recording fourteen years ago and has continued to build on that success. This CD is a sampler of her recorded work over those years, supplemented by two new duets with Luciano Pavarotti. Ranging from the languid sorrow of Handel's Lascia ch'io pianga to the good cheer of Verdi's Libiamo ne' lieti calici, these operatic duets ...

Olivier Messiaen: Quartet for the End of Time9 reviews
Jian Wang, Olivier Messiaen, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 2001

The best I know.
Quatuor pour la fin du Temps is one of my favourite Messiaen's works, together with his Turangalila Symphonie, the Vingt Regards and his opera Saint Françoise. In all that pieces you can feel together with a great development of musical technique a great faith in the work, something that is specially present in this Quatuor, composed in the concentration camp in which Olivier Messiaen was ...

Gioachino Rossini, Myung-Whun Chung, ...

Deutsche Grammophon, 1997

Best recording of Rossini's work!
Rossini's Stabart Mater is a wonderfully tuneful work veering more towards opera than religious music, this superlative version under the excellent conducting and superb playing of Chung and the Wiener Philarmoniker has assembled a worthy quartet of singers,Gimenez a true Rossini tenor sings the "Cujus animan" with flowing ease, confident with the high D flat,Bartoli is in exuberant, rich voice ...

Brahms: Double Concerto; Clarinet Quintet Op.1152 reviews
Johannes Brahms, Myung-Whun Chung, ...

EMI Classics, 2007

Outstanding!
I discovered this CD in a review from The Week. This collection totally lived up to its 4 stars! The sound is more full and powerful than any Brahm's recording I have ever heard. This CD makes the excellent Bernstein DG CD sound weak in comparison. The Capucons are worth finding and remembering.

The Best Othello since Toscanini
It is a true wonder when one comes across such a vivid and emotional portrayal of one of Verdi's greatest roles. As with the Lisbon recording of Callas's Traviata. With this Othello we get the best of all possible worlds.Placido Domingo shines in this role after so many years of study and two previous records.he truly becomes the Moor in every way.His voice has acquired the dark tone, and he has ...

Whitman's Sampler of Stellar Performances from Opera's Elite on Four of Mozart's Best Opera Seria
Decca has seen fit to release its vast Mozart catalogue in an elaborate, twenty-disc series celebrating the composer's 250th birthday. This one celebrates four of his most acclaimed opera seria from his last decade - "Idomeneo, re di Creta" [1780], "Die Entführung aus dem Serail" ("The Abduction from the Seraglio") [1782], Die Zauberflöte" ("The Magic Flute") [1791] and the unfinished "Zaide" ...

James Galway - Dances for Flute2 reviews
Johann Sebastian Bach, Arthur Benjamin, ...

RCA, 1993

Unusual but outstanding flute music
This is one of a number of cd's bought for my wife (an avid flute lover) which have turned out to be among my favorites. Galway plays with his normal crispness and energy, but here some unusual pieces one doesn't hear often. The two Khachaturian songs are haunting and the Belfast Hornpipe is so neat! We listen to this often with toetapping, sometimes dancing enjoyment.

Cecilia Bartoli - Chant d'amour (Mélodies française) / Myung-Whung Chung12 reviews
Georges Bizet, Maurice Ravel, ...

Decca, 1996

Beautiful collection
I heard one song from this album and decided to give it a try, and it was a great surprise for me. Great collection and Cecilia's singing is simply beautiful, without any of these strange mannerisms that sometimes show up in her performances. Her sound is still fairly breathy, but that does not detract at all from the wonderful delivery, and she is great at putting colors and different characters ...

A spiritual experience
The DVD is the full 77 minute concert with two featurettes previously released alone. The CD is the full 72 minute concert previously released alone, except that two bonus tracks have been added. The audio quality of each one is quite good. (If you have a Dolby Digital stereo, then you must go into the setup menu on the DVD to select Dolby Digital sound. The default music track is the stereo ...
