Classic Film Noir 9 Movie Pack14 reviews
Edward G. Robinson, Barbara Stanwyck

St.Clair Entertainment Group, Inc, 2005

GREAT collection of FILM NOIR for AWESOME PRICE
I saw this DVD set in a Best Buy a few months ago. It was only six or seven dollars, so I bought it. I sat down and watched a couple of the films and they were awesome. I haven't finished watching the whole set but of the 4-5 films I have watched, it was totally worth every penny. D.O.A. and Detour are my favorites so far... the only one I really didn't like was The Scar. I guess I just couldn't ...

PRE-CODE FILMS THAT MAKE FOR A FUN-FILLED ORGY
It may not have exactly been a time of innocence, but it was a time of some pretty good flicks that have, until now, been pretty much forgotten. Turner Classic Movies has changed that. Again. The five films in their second collection push the boundaries of morality---a sex, sin-filled orgy of flimsy nighties, politically incorrect situations, extraordinary frankness, nudity, adultery, premarital ...

Ball of Fie
This is one of my favorite screwball comedies. It used to keep me company as a teenage babysitter. It's wonderful that it is now on DVD. Gary Cooper is so charmingly shy. Barbara Stanwyck was gorgeous and funny. The supporting cast is fabulous.

Barbara Stanwyck, Burt Lancaster

NUPTIAL BLISS
Just take one look at thr ratings to see how this classic thriller has affected viewers over the years. Stanwyk plays the bold, brazen rich girl: "I usually get what I want". She wants to marry Lancaster, a grade school dropout, despite her father's warnings(Begley). She gets what she wants, and soon the couple is living in Begley's house in Illinois. But Burt has no life of his own, begs a ...

Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck

Universal Studios, 2006

What a Great Film!
This is an excellent film with an excellent screenplay, great acting and exquisite play with lighting to tell a story. Film noir doesn't come better than this! Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson are perfectly cast in their roles and you only realise this when you compare the film to the tv remake on disc two to see the big difference. Richard Crenna was a joke and only the ...

The Furies - Criterion Collection2 reviews
Barbara Stanwyck, Walter Huston

Criterion, 2008

Walter Huston's last film and a great Western
This film about the feud between a megalomaniac rancher T.C. Jeffords(Walter Huston) and his daughter Vance (Barbara Stanwyck) is an unusual but excellent western. Jeffords and his daughter have a complex relationship with even a hint of the sordid that had to remain unstated in 1950, when this film was made. In middle age T.C. takes a wife, Flo (Judith Anderson). Vance sees Flo as a threat to ...

Forty Guns13 reviews

20th Century Fox, 2005

a strange western from a great director
Occasionally some of the great noir directors of the 40's and 50's like Fuller, nicholas ray, and billy wilder (wilder made a film in pretty much every genre) would make a genre film like a western.. When they did the results were very interesting as they used the same sorts of techniques in these films as they used in their other movies.. The sexual and psychological tensions of such movies ...

LONG AGO, AND NOT SO FAR AWAY-NOSTALGIA FOR MY PLAYING DAYS
The title because in 1955 I was in Miami Beach, discussing a baseball scholarship at the U. of Miami. By coincidence two of my aunts showed up at the same hotel. We went to dinner at the The Fontainebleau Hotel and I ate 2 of their huge corned beef sandwiches and a giant banana split, both of which they bragged were the largest on the beach. As we wandered south on Collins, and turned onto ...

Crime of Passion11 reviews
Barbara Stanwyck, Sterling Hayden

MGM (Video & DVD), 2003

"I know that you can achieve so much more Bill"
Barbara Stanwyck was an actress of formidable talent, she was subtle, and elegant, yet she could bluster and lose control and do it with so much grace and grandeur. In Crime of Passion a 50's noir potboiler, Stanwyck plays a popular San Francisco newspaper columnist named Kathy Ferguson. Fiercely independent, Kathy prides herself on the fact that she's a career girl, and that she hasn't resorted, ...

Classic Western Collection - The Outlaws (The Proud Ones, Forty Guns, Broken Lance, The Culpepper Cattle Co.)2 reviews
Barbara Stanwyck, Barry Sullivan

20th Century Fox, 2006

Great sound & choice of screen formats
All 4 of these movies are flipper discs (1 per movie) with a choice of fullscreen or widescreen wiewing. Fullscreen on one side and widescreen on the other. If you have a Dolby Digital surround sound system then your in for a real treat for two of the four films in this set. The Culpepper Cattle Company is in mono with an optional wide spaced (fake stereo) soundtrack that can be chosen from ...

"Gangway, you hee-lots!"
As a last ditch effort to blow off some steam before she is fired, reporter Ann Mitchell (Barbara Stanwyck) fabricates a letter written by a disgruntled citizen who threatens to jump off the top of a building. John Doe's letter causes quite a stir, and Ann's newspaper sees it as an opportunity to sell papers. They hire her back to personally oversee the choosing of a John Doe and to build up as ...

MGM (Video & DVD), 2005

A wonderful mom story.
The mom (Barbara Stanwyck) is a tacky, tastless woman, but loves her little daughter so very much that she makes what I consider to be the ultimate sacrafice. I won't ruin the end for you by saying what she does, but it is one of my favorite old movies. Don't bother with the re-make, which I believe was done in the 90's sometime. It's a terrible dissapointment.

Barbara Stanwyck Collection3 reviews
Barbara Stanwyck, Gary Cooper

St Clair Vision, 2007

Barbara Stanwyck in Top Form
This is a really nice Barbara Stanwyck sampler with average prints designed for those looking for a bargain. The plus side is that it contains two great films and a very fun murder mystery which balances out the two dramas. "Meet John Doe" and "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" are the meat here, while "Lady of Burlesque" makes for a sweet dessert. Though it's gotten a bad rap over the years ...

1953
This version is wonderful in all aspects! Sure, there are mistakes in the sinking and such, but the two leads are spectacular! I got so involved in their story that nearly forgot the inevitable. Barbara Stanwyk is so fantastic. She seems to be the definition of 'leading lady'. I've seen other reviews compare this version with the 1997 version, in my opinion both movies hold their own! If ...

Still Holds Up Today
Preston Sturges did some terrific comedies, mostly in the 40's, & this is definitely one of them. Barbara Stanwyck & Henry Fonda are both great, along with a fine supporting cast including, Charles Coburn, William Demarest & Eugene Pallette. From the opening credits, a cartoon snake squirming down the left side of the names & eventually running through Preston's name, to the last line (which I ...

Christmas in Connecticut95 reviews

A classic movie you can watch again and again
Our whole family loves this movie. Barbara Stanwyck plays a writer who pretends to be married with a baby and pretends she's an expert at cooking, sewing, and overall home-making. Her boss decides that she should have a recovering military man to her country home (which she doesn't have) for Christmas so he can experience cozy home-life over the holidays. Then, her boss manages to invite himself ...
