Desert Hearts (Two-Disc Vintage Collection)84 reviews
Andra Akers, Dean Butler

Wolfe Video, 2007

Old fashioned but relevant
The movie was a bit melodramatic but very effective in making it's point. As a woman who was happily married for 27 of 29 years and only discovered my "true" sexuality at almost 50yrs old, I can relate to the hesitancy of pursing this type of relationship. Based on my experience, I found it depicted a fairly realistic view of a female to female relationship.

The Sons of Katie Elder29 reviews
John Wayne, Dean Martin

Paramount, 2001

Not a great Waynestern, but a good one with very enjoyable twists
This is a different sort of Western for John Wayne. While he has a big reputation as a gunfighter, he spends the film avoiding fighting as much as he can. Wayne also has fewer action sequences in the film. This may simply be due to the plot of the movie, or it may have been his recover from lung cancer surgery and treatment that he had in 1964 and had delayed the shooting of the film until ...

Great stuff!
El Dorado, Rio Lobo, same movie, different supporting cast. Still entertaining. The entire package as group is awewsome. Some of the Duke's best stuff. This pack includes Director's cuts and documentaries for a couple of the movies more great stuff. It was great to see Maureen O'Hara talking about the old days with the Duke and about her doing most of her own stunts. It was great to see ...

A Fresh Look at WWII
All too often you watch a movie about WWII and it's a pretty one sided affair as we follow a group of angst ridden GI's as they fight the enemy and each other to save Democracy from the evil German fascists. But every now and again you get a film like the Young Lions which spins the familiar story on its head and shows you that the evil fascist German is also human no matter how wrong the ...

Good movie
My family has recently become huge fans of the X-files TV show (thanks to reruns on the Sci Fi channel), so we were excited to see that they had actually released a movie back in the late 90's. I read several of the bad reviews that this movie received, but we really liked it when we first watched it. True, it's a little different from the TV series in that it was hard for them to try & fit in ...

New Line Home Video, 2001

Much more than a cult film -- a poignant and engaging story of love and loss
I won't repeat the summaries of this film -- I only want to say it is much more than a cult film but is more exciting and intriguing and fun and sad than most films out there. Unfortunately even New Line decided to market this as a niche product -- comparing it to the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Without knocking that film, which is a phenomenon of its own, Hedwig is in a different league. While ...

Some Came Running25 reviews
Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin

Warner Home Video, 2008

Good movie to watch
Who would think that small town life is boring? Not if you watched this film. Frank Sinatra plays this soldier who comes home from WW2. Somewhere along the way, he hooks up with Shirley McClaine, who follows him, but she has some unwelcome company of her own following her. He meets up with his brother, who is a successful owner of a jewelry store and into his assistant because his social climbing ...

A Classic B&W gem from the 50's
I'd always enjoyed this movie on TV and was glad to be able to add it to my DVD collection. Not having seen it in a while there were scenes I did not remember, particularly at the beginning. I suspect TV stations tended to snip the early scenes to add commercial time since the film-maker took the time to insert something a lot of modern movies don't bother with: Plot Development. The original ...

A log awaited release.....
I've waited a long, long time for this movie to be released. I saw it when it was first released (1962) and unable to find it until now.I came accross this movie on a cable station and watched it. I logged onto to Amazon.com and found it for sale. I purchased it and watched it again. I have to admit, it was a little campy, but it was the Rat Pack in the making. If you are a fan of western ...

Newly rediscovered- and am I ever glad!
I hadn't seen this movie for... well, decades. In fact, I'd pretty much forgotten about it. Sure, I smiled at the reference in GET SHORTY, but I'd pretty much forgotten this one. Then I saw it at Wal Mart for a price too nice to pass up. I bought it and watched it with my wife who had never seen it before. We both loved it. A little while later I watched my dvd of TRUE GRIT, the film Duke ...

Cool Hand Luke135 reviews
Paul Newman, George Kennedy

Warner Home Video, 1997

Communication breakdown
Paul Newman stars as Luke along with a marvellous cast in a prison gang film set in the deep south. Luke is a former war hero who when very drunk one night starts damaging parking meters (the very beginning of the film) and ends up serving time. Although apparently a very laid back character, the death of his mother changes Luke's attitude and the film hinges on this critical moment. I've ...

Down to the sea in stitches
While I don't mind a good submarine adventure, very few are comedies and this one is without doubt, the funniest I'd seen in a long time. The scene where the overbearing XO was made to walk the plank at sea,was a delight, and one of the highlights of the film. there was some slapstick humor a little bathroom humor and a couple of what would be objectionable words but no worse than I had seen in ...

An adventure 65 million years in the making...
For creatures that became extinct over 65 million years ago, it's amazing how dinosaurs never really go out of fashion. Given their popularity, come to think of it, it's more than a little surprising that it took Hollywood the bulk of those 65 million years to finally make a really good dino romp. Richard Attenborough stars as John Hammond, an eccentric dinosaur nut who's somehow managed to ...

The first classic in the Spaghetti Western genre - a remake of Kurosawa's Yojimbo
This 1964 film was the first of what came to be called "Spaghetti Westerns" and took then TV star Clint Eastwood and made him into a major Movie Star. If you look on IMDG at Clint Eastwood's career you will be amazed at how rich and varied it has been. Star of all kinds of movies, director of many films, producer, writer, and much more. Just amazing. This film is Sergio Leone's remake of ...
