Yankee Doodle Dandy (Two-Disc Special Edition) 96 reviews James Cagney, Ann Sothern
Warner Home Video, 2003
Yankee Doodle Danny (Two Disk Special Edition) The movie was enjoyable to watch and got me to wondering again why James Cagney didn't make more musicals. He is fanastic in this movie. However, I especially enjoyed the added features, especially the newsreel. I did not realize that Mexico was an ally during World War II. Would recommed this to anyone who enjoys old movies and if a James Cagney fan in regard to his gangster movies, watch ...

Man of a Thousand Faces 24 reviews James Cagney, Dorothy Malone
Universal Studios, 2008
CAGNEY IS REMARKABLE! If you haven't seen this movie; it is PRICELESS! Cagney gives what might be the best performance of his life. He should have gotten an Academy Award for this touching yet strong role. Highly recommended!

A Midsummer Night's Dream 37 reviews James Cagney, Joe E. Brown
Warner Home Video, 2007
WARNER'S "PRESTIGE" FOLLY - ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL ! A beautiful print with excellent extras. One could certainly quibble about whether or not it's "Shakespeare" - But who cares, it's fantastically conceived and BEAUTIFULLY photographed. The cast is eclectic, to say the least - But in nutty sort of way, inspired (Rooney). The Korngold score is a treasure from beginning to end (adapted with great skill from several of Menddelssohn's works - A not ...

One, Two, Three 60 reviews Chris Allen, Leon Askin
MGM (Video & DVD), 2003
Where was his Oscar? If ever anyone deserved an Oscar for his/her performance it was James Cagney in One, Two, Three. He was brilliant. It was non-stop comedy and even after all these years it is as funny as in 1962 when it was made. Forget the rubbish the studios are turning out today and buy this movie. Good supporting cast including Arlene Francis .. and the guy who played Schlemmer was a hoot.

The Public Enemy 45 reviews Edgar Bergen, Charlie McCarthy (II)
Warner Home Video, 2005
The Public Enemy Wellman's "The Public Enemy" launched the film career of a pugnacious Irish-American from Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen who started out as a dancer, only to become the toughest tough guy of them all: Jimmy Cagney, never cockier than he is here. Since organized crime was a fairly new and frightening epidemic at the time, Wellman gives "Enemy" the stark feel of a purely cautionary tale. Both the ...

White Heat 35 reviews James Cagney, Virginia Mayo
Warner Home Video, 2005
Perfect Gangster film till "The Godfather"... James Cagney was a force in Hollywood during the first half of the 20th century. He put out numerous films that set the stage for acting schools to pop culture references that it's a shame he isn't remember today like some of the other actors in his generation. Probably the highlight of this period of his film career is 1949's White Heat, a film about a gangster whose Oedipus complex is least ...

Warner Home Video, 2005
A CLASSIC! CAGNEY & BOGART?...........AND THERE'S MORE? This has been a favorite of mine for many years. I wish they would released "Crime School" on DVD! What is the problem?? The whole cast is great in this tale of two childhood friends who take two very different paths as the result of a dumb idea and one of the boys getting caught by the police. They just don't make them like this anymore! No wonder today's youths of the world have no character! I ...

RAGTIME uncut on DVD I can't understand why so many reviewers are claiming that the RAGTIME disc contains a cut version of this film, missing 40 minutes of footage. I picked up a copy recently, and it's definitely uncut, running exactly 155 minutes

Warner Gangsters Collection, Vol. 1 (The Public Enemy / White Heat / Angels with Dirty Faces / Little Caesar ... 2 reviews Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney
Warner Home Video, 2008
Warner's top-tier gangster movie properties It's interesting to compare the three stars of these movies - Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, and Humphrey Bogart - and their styles in each of these movies. "Little Caesar" and "Public Enemy" were made when prohibition was still in effect and gangland crime was still a big problem. Thus Robinson and Cagney each play remorseless criminals with no redeeming values whatsoever. Robinson's Rico is ...

"Tough Guys" collection renamed The Warner Gangsters Collection Volume 2 is a renamed version of the Tough Guys set issued in mid-2006 (and which still seems to be on sale). What follows is my review of the original set, which should apply to this one as well.

The Roaring Twenties 35 reviews James Cagney, Priscilla Lane
Warner Home Video, 2005
The Roaring Twenties A breakthrough for director Walsh, this classic boasts electric performances from both Cagney and Bogie. Consistent with most Bogart portrayals from the thirties, his George Hally is a low double-crosser who puts the screws to honorable (in his way) Eddie. Consistent with most Cagney roles, Eddie gets his revenge. "Twenties" is a worthy swan song to the glory days of the gangster picture--and ...

Mystery 250 Movie Pack 2 reviews Basil Rathbone, James Cagney
Mill Creek Entertainment, 2007
Mind Numbing Deal First, what this isn't. It is not a collection of Casablanca-esqe blockbusters. The movies in this boxset were average fare for the respective time periods. In addition, not minute was spent on restoration. What it is, though, is a hell of a deal. 250 movies for less than 50 bucks--that is 19.9 cents each!
Old movies, like old radio shows and even old music, are frequently an acquired taste. ...
