The Twilight of the Middle Kingdom
"The Last Emperor" tells the amazing true story of Pu Yi,the Middle Kingdom's last emperor. From its gripping opening sequence in which the young Pu Yi is torn from his mother's arms to his life as a nobody in the gray blandness of Communist China, it is a powerful spectacle. Ryuichi Sakamoto&David Byrne's soundtrack captures the epic sweep of the movie. Bernardo Bertolucci's direction is ...

Caveat #1: I love action films. Caveat #2: This is not a martial arts film. Which is fine with me--I love action films, regardless of what kind of action it is. Well, some action films. This is one. After an assassin named Rogue killed his partner and his partner's wife and child, finding Rogue is federal agent John Crawford's (Jason Statham) raison d'etre. Meanwhile, Rogue's (Jet Li) ...

A Cinematic Treasure!
The sets of 'Chinatown' were constructed and photographed at Dino de Laurentiis' film studio in North Carolina. I know because I saw them while visiting the set. The real Chinatown has streets so narrow you could not possibly film on them. However, that's where the 'pretend' ends and the gritty reality of life on Canal Street begins. While this movie was made over 20 years ago, it not only ...

Amazon's critic M. Fine should be fired!
King Kong '76 was one of my favorite movies as a child, when I saw it for the first time I tought it was phenomenal. Now as an adult I can see the movie has many flaws, mainly Jessica Lange's acting, but to be qualified as utter trash as Mr. Marshall describes it, it is just plainly unfair, this movie has many qualities: great cinematography, great music score, natural sets, an atmosphere that ...

Previous reviews incorrect.
The shorter version of the film is the director's preferred version of the film. The longer version was a version he had cut for television distribution, and while its a shame that the extended version will not be included, rest assured that the shorter version is the director's cut of the film.

A film that solidifies my faith in cinema....
This film, along with 1900, are Bernardo Bertolucci's greatest films (so far). The Last Emperor is one of my all time favorites, safely secure in my top ten list. The late Gene Siskel called this film "one of the greatest films I've seen since I became a film critic" (I'm paraphrasing here). It's one of the most mysterious, beguiling, and transendant epics ever made. The film is ...

Amazing performances
I really felt that I was somehow witnessing what would really happen if we found a frozen caveman and were able to revive him. It's a truly unique experience and a pleasure to watch such realistic acting - which doesn't feel like "acting" at all - in such an "un-realistic" setting. It's fascinating and entertaining - I highly recommend it!

Original horror from Rollin.
I have just discovered Jean Rollin and so far have been very impressed. Demoniacs is visually stunning thanks to a great transfer. The movie does move at a slow pace and there really isn't much gore, but the patient horror fan should be pleased. There is a very original approach to the subject matter and interesting settings and visuals. It is almost hard to decribe why I like Rollin's pictures. ...

Half-way recommended....
This is gonna get confusing so hold on. I decided to take a chance on this low-priced, grindhouse double-feature cause i enjoy fairly obscure horror films with an exploitation angle to them. Problem is, both films aren't very good attempts at the horror genre. EVIL EYE struck me as the potentially better horror film but it was less exploitive and coherent than BLACK CANDLES and ended up being ...

Last Emperor

Criterion Collection, 2008
Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor won nine Academy Awards, unexpectedly sweeping every category in which it was nominated quite a feat for a challenging, multilayered epic directed by an Italian and starring an international cast. Yet the power and scope of the film was, and remains, undeniable the life of Emperor Pu Yi, who took the throne at age three, in 1908, before witnessing decades of cultural and political upheaval, within and ...

A Brittle Film About Paris In The 1920's
Director Alan Rudolph's "The Moderns" is all about Paris in the 1920's and captures the cafe society, the American expatriates, the artists and the pretentiousness and shallowness of the times. Keith Carradine is an American artist who cannot make a living and is obsessed with Rachel (Linda Fiorentino) who is married to a boorish businessman Bert Stone (John Lone) who has made his fortune in ...

First, keep in mind that this is not a review of the movie, it is a review of the item listing. It looks like Amazon is charging $26.96 for both of these movies. They are both great movies, but I can't see myself paying that much for them. Why? Because you can get them cheaper if you buy them seperately... from the same website! If you love these movies, then buy them seperately... ...
