An outstanding achievement
As someone who dislikes Spielberg movies for their triteness and reliance on mind-numbing plots, I forewent seeing Empire of the Sun for years because I assumed it would be another "Schindler's List" or worse. In fact, Empire of the Sun is the only Spielberg movie I can wholeheartedly recommend. The cinematography, acting, script, and direction are all virtually flawless. Other reviewers have ...

sleeper hit
I had never heard of this movie until my brother told me to check it out. It was awesome! I don't wanna sound gay or anything, but I love most Bale movies. This movie has all the action and plot twists that you could look for. It is also awesome because I love the 1984 storyline.

An inspiring tale of hope!
Don't touch me, reader! In this film, Montag, is an up and comer at the local fire-station where books are burned. He has a beautiful wife and a promotion coming up. But he starts to read books and his life falls apart! He becomes anti-social, ruins his marriage, and ruins his career! In this movie there are people that memorize books in order to keep them alive even after they're burned. If I ...

Matt/Christian and one BADDDD DRAGON!!!
Matt and Christian sharing a screen with one really bad azz male dragon, could a movie have anymore testosterone than that. The story was nicely done, FX nicely executed and the acting no less than great, I was completely satisfied with my decision to give this movie it's "day in court". I am purchasing a second copy of this dvd this week because cable chooses to exhaust me with next to ...

As good as I remember it, and slightly better now that I'm older and understand some of the references.
Swing Kids has always been a favorite movie of mine, since I first saw it in college. Seeing it again after having been in the music business for 8 years, many of the musical references and jokes are clearer to me now and made the movie that much better. Musician or not, I highly recommend renting/buying this flick.

The Masterpiece set in Steampunk ...
What can be said so early in the game about one of the greatest films ever made? Are you watching carefully? Did you miss something? Yes ... you heard right. The Prestige is not the greatest film ever made, but it does belong in that special group of films that breaks the mold, sets a framework to be emulated and creates something within the film that is greater than the film itself. More ...

WARNING: This review contains spoilers! DO NOT READ THIS UNTIL YOU'VE SEEN THE FILM! Every once in a great while a film comes along that changes everything and revolutionizes the way films are made. It happened with Fritz Lang's Metropolis, Orson Welles' Citizen Kane, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, Steven Spielberg's Jaws, and George Lucas' Star Wars... now we are given Andy and Larry Wachowski's ...

Super Skinny Batman!
With the release of the new Batman movie I wanted to see how big Christian Bale's acting chops were. He impresses with this very stylized "film noir" and of course the weight loss is just plan scary.

If Only...
...the studio had allowed Mr. Proyas to release THIS version (the Director's Cut) of Dark City to theaters, maybe it would have been better received. I will not do a laundry list of what has been added or removed but I will say I believe this version has more depth than the original theatrical release and, frankly, makes more sense without being obvious or losing the sense of the story unfolding ...

Science fiction at its best, a modern version of Huxley's "Brave New World"
Gattaca really makes you wonder about the moral and ethical consequences of genetic engineering, and the risks of mankind playing God. This is science fiction at its best. In a nutshell, Gattaca is the modern version of Aldous Huxley's science fiction classic novel Brave New World (1932). As usual, not every great movie is a box office hit, and Gattaca actually went unnoticed for many sci-fi ...

Great Movie - Very disappointing disk
When I first saw this movie on cable about seven years ago I was very pleasantly surprised how entertaining and thought provoking it was. I won't get into a lot of details except to say that I like the way the movie makes you think and the scenery and costumes of 1937 LA is very convincing and contrasts greatly with the dark, chrome and glass look of the present day LA. I think the acting is ...

WANTED: Law Enforcement Recruits Willing To Kill
As in real life, there is a fine line that separates the good guys (cops) from the bad guys (the crooks). Good guys are never just good guys in real life, or in a David Ayer script (TRAINING DAY). Sometimes they are conflicted and sometimes they're just plain old criminal punks. And sometimes they're walking on the edge of a criminally insane abyss. Ayer writes mostly crime drama with rogue cop ...

How did you know my name??
What a weird, creepy, bit of fun this is! It is reminiscent of "Naked Lunch" (and why not? Cronenberg did THAT one, too!). The game within a game within a game was Excellent! I find it odd that it was a flop at the Box-Office. I first saw "ExistenZ" the year it first came out on VHS, and enjoyed it immensely. Of course, I'm biased, because I'm a HUGE fan of David Cronenberg's works. Where David ...

If You Don't Like Ultraviolet, You Missed the Point
I've seen a buttload of poor reviews for this flick, rendered by critics who seemingly expected something more than Milla Jovovich spinning and pivoting and massacring all comers. These critics obviously don't understand the drooling fans of Milla Jovovich -- we DON'T CARE that the story is aimless, that the pace is dizzying, or that the violence is mindless. It's all about Milla, you dolts. ...

Ladies of the Canyon
Pleasantly surprising small movie, loosely based on Joni Mitchell, according to the director. Frances McDormand is great. The soundtrack is catchy, sort of Coldplay-ish, as is the band character, who even looks like Cold Play's lead singer. It's a chick flick, but it's high quality. Great cinematography.
