Centennial: The Complete Series 203 reviews Centennial
Universal Studios, 2008
Magnificence I agree 100% with everyone's postings and reviews on Centennial. It is by far one of the best, if not the best mini series to air on television. I have watched this mini series countless times and have my personal VHS recording of it. I was ecstatic at the announcement that finally Centennial was to be released on DVD. I am, however, very disappointed that Universal left out so much of the ...

Lonesome Dove 13 reviews Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones
Rhi Entertainment, 2008
Bud Wright I believe I have some insight into this whole aspect ratio controversy. For many years, filmmakers filmed movies in something called "Super 35." The final, unedited and uncropped raw footage looks something like the old Chevrolet symbol, in that each scene was framed in both widescreen AND fullscreen ratios. The widescreen crop, of course, was released to theaters, but the fullscreen crop was ...

From the Earth to the Moon - The Signature Edition 261 reviews Mason Adams, Jo Anderson
HBO Home Video, 2005
Epic Series This edition is incredible. The stories are inspiring, the cinematography breath taking and the approach is refreshing and powerful, particularly regarding the Apollo 13 mission. It captures the majesty, trials and triumphs of the space program. While watching this you realize that one of the problems in America today is our lack of a sense of mission and a pursuit of a common goal, we have, in ...

Cranford 71 reviews Francesca Annis, Eileen Atkins
BBC Warner, 2008
WOW, another perfect BBC production This show was just plain perfection. The acting was wonderful (as was the casting) and the seamless story (a compilation of 3 of Gaskell's stories) was just impecably done.
This was such a pleasure to watch. I cannot rave enough about how well done this production was. There is just not a lot more to say about this fabulous show....

John Adams (HBO Miniseries) 284 reviews Paul Giamatti, Laura Linney
HBO, 2008
Magnificent and unforgettable. There are two main criticisms of the HBO miniseries based on David McCullough's biography of John Adams, and I don't understand either of them. The first is that the miniseries makes Adams less admirable than he was in the book. Frankly, that was my main criticism of the book--that McCullough tended to gloss over Adams' well-documented character flaws. To my mind the miniseries presents Adams ...

Band of Brothers 1210 reviews Damien Lewis, Ron Livingston
HBO Home Video, 2002
Essential Introduction to the Greatest Generation To the Next Generation Band of Brothers takes us from Boot camp through the great battles of the European Theater of operations to the final Victory against Hitler's Third Reich. Along the way, we see these Band of Brothers (from Shakespeare's famous speech in Henry V - "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers...") as land at Normandy, weather the onslaught of Bastogne, cross into Germany, liberate a concentration ...

Pride and Prejudice - The Special Edition (A&E, 1996) 1528 reviews Colin Firth, Jennifer Ehle
A&E Home Video, 2001
Really Great! I love this miniseries! I hadn't read Pride and Prejudice prior to seeing the movie, but when I finally did get around to reading the book, I couldn't believe how accurate this movie was to what was in the book. In my opinion, that very rarely happens and it's great that they were able to recreate the book perfectly into a movie! In addition to the recreation, the acting, setting, costumes, and ...

WGBH Boston, 2007
Jane Eyre came to life--FANTASTIC ACTING!! This is the best adaptation of Jane Eyre I have ever seen. I have watched this at least 5 times and never tire of it. The actors every one of them are superb and Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson light up the screen with thier undying love for each other while they both struggle with thier inner demons as such. Ruth is great as Jane in every sense of the word and Toby Stephens although too good ...

The 10th Kingdom 604 reviews Kimberly Williams, Scott Cohen
Lions Gate, 2002
Great Movie for All Ages As an elementary school teacher, I think that there is a small bit of language that I would not want my students to hear but I think overall it is a great movie for the young and the old. It has an imaginative plot with many interesting twists and turns. The acting is great. There are a lot of characters and sometimes is hard to follow but with a few pauses here and there and a few rewinds, it ...

Lonesome Dove [Blu-ray] 5 reviews Robert Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones
Genius Products (TVN), 2008
You've Never Seen Lonesome Dove Like This! I pre-ordered this Blu-ray disc when I saw that it was going to be available. I was sceptical as to how much better it would actually be than the DVD version that I already owned. Let me tell you, it is COMPLETELY different. Seriously, the clarity, film quality and Dolby 5.1 surround make this Blu-ray a MUST HAVE for any fan of this Western epic! It is in widescreen for the first time, and ...

State of Play (Miniseries) 26 reviews James MacAvoy, Bill Nighy
BBC Warner, 2008
Had my heart racing -- LITERALLY! WOW. This is one heck of a heart-pounding roller coaster ride. In some ways, it was like "All The President's Men" on speed.
Everything about this series was top notch: the writing (fast paced but believable); the acting (not a second rate performance in the bunch -- American tv would have cast a bunch of pretty boys and bimbos who lacked all sense of reality); the editing (quick cuts and ...

Frank Herbert's Children of Dune (Sci-Fi TV Miniseries) (Two-Disc DVD Set) 175 reviews Alec Newman, Julie Cox
Artisan Home Entertainment, 2003
Starts from nowhere and goes to nowhere but is fun to watch This made for TV series looks like the standard made for TV items on the SciFi channel. However most of the actors are well known (as Alice Krige ... Lady Jessica Atreides) and the others should and maybe will be well known. The actors do not overshadow the characters. The sets and costumes are better than the average made for TV sets and the dialog is not that droll rehashed soap opera over the ...

Best Mini Series Ever This is probably the best mini series ever produced. It's a high budget movie that was divided into several weeks. It's the story of high finance in pre-China Hong Kong and has some of everything from action to intrigue.

Wives and Daughters 168 reviews Justine Waddell, Bill Paterson
BBC Warner, 2006
Meticulous!!!! My review will be short but sweet ----This was an absolutely perfect show. From the village to the gorgeous manor houses, from the scenery to the writing, from the casting to the story.....it was just perfect. The BBC and Andrew Davies have done it again. I would not be hard-pressed to say that I liked this better than "Pride and Prejudice".
And do not skip the DVD extras.....fascinating look ...
