Still rocking the kids
I bought this for my 16 year old daughter who has discovered the Beatles. She just loves their music and I am getting to enjoy them again also. It is great to be able to share my youth with todays youth.

Reflections of a bygone era
The first DVD collection of eight A&C movies with Universal Recording Studios is truly memorable. The mainstays of this collection are the three service films, Buck Privates, In The Navy and Keep 'em Flying. These films harken back to a time when Hollywood actually showed patriotism, unlike the liberal-run Hollywood of today, which uses movies to sabotage national pride. One can certainly feel ...

John Cassavetes-Five Films

Brilliant and beautiful and raw depictions of how vulnerable we can be
The theme that all of the indispensable films in this set return to is how vulnerable we can be. At bottom what each of us wants is to be respected, to be acknowledged and to be loved. Anyone who loses that vulnerability -- which is for Cassavettes an ability: the ability to feel to express and to allow oneself to be heard without the stifling of self-censor -- anyone who loses that ...

Saturday Night And Sunday Morning12 reviews
Albert Finney, Shirley Anne Field

Continental Distributing, 2002

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning
Another top quality, British "kitchen-sink" drama from the 1960s, Reisz's film launched Finney to prominence after a promising debut in Tony Richardson's "The Entertainer." Drowning five days of stagnation in one night's revelry--or is it oblivion?--Arthur is the quintessential "angry young man," as he is going nowhere and won't let himself care, either about short-term inconveniences or ...

Love and sex, pre-Code style
There were a few years in movie making when sound was first introduced but the Production Codes had not yet been in force. These codes would severely limit the ability of movies to depict the real world: sex, violence and corruption were toned down - often to the point of sheer blandness. Crime could never pay, authority figures were always forces of good and even married couples were confined ...

Roy Orbison Black & White Night
Outstanding review of Orbison's best songs with back-up by now well known artists. The musicians clearly are enjoying the rare evening and you feel that you are in on the jam session.

It Happened One Night101 reviews
Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert

Sony Pictures, 1999

Just keep your eye on that thumb.
Ellie Andrews(Claudette Colbert) is running away(like she is so good at) from her rich father and on the way meets roughed-up newsman Peter Warne(Clark Gable). Similar to many films at the time, but this one stands the test of time better then most, the witty dialogue is still cunning and smart. Not to mention Claudette and Clark have brilliant chemistry, especially in the scene where they ...

Night and the City - Criterion Collection31 reviews
Richard Widmark, Gene Tierney

Criterion, 2005

Noir masterpiece
"Night and the City" is classic film noir based on the Gerald Kersh novel with Richard Widmark as Harry Fabian, a two-bit hustler scheming to become a big-time fight promoter in London. Widmark is superb in what may be his best performance. He brings to mind James Cagney at times, but he's actually more like Bugs Bunny, full of bravado and nervous energy. And let's not forget Mike Mazurski ...

Marx Brothers Collection
This is a great collection of the Marx Brothers movies. I bought this collection because it contained a number of movies I had not seen. It was worth the price, because I enjoy their movies. It was a decent transfer onto the dvd format.

White Nights61 reviews
Mikhail Baryshnikov, Gregory Hines

Sony Pictures, 2006

For Baryshnikov Fans! A Must!
I first saw this movie when it came out years ago. I loved it then and I love it now! If you are a fan of ballet, dance, and Baryshnikov it is a must have! The story follows the era of the Russian Cold War and the isolation its dancers went through. It is a likely story for its time with dancers being controlled by a harsh government, people wanting to escape the life of poverty and ...

The Night of the Hunter179 reviews
Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters

MGM (Video & DVD), 2000

"It doesn't matter. It's me your mother believes"
The story may be simple - two children, John and Pearl, are pursued by the evil 'Preacher' who killed their mother and is after the money their father stole - but there is nothing in cinema to compare to The Night of the Hunter. Both Robert Mitchum's stunning extroverted performance and the film itself were shamelessly plundered by De Niro and Scorsese for their all but inept remake of Cape Fear, ...

Roy Orbison

Image Entertainment, 2008

This will be the one to have...
For the past few months, I have enjoyed the HD-DVD version of this title, and without a doubt, it was worth every penny. I can't believe I'm going to double-dip, but Blu-Ray has taken over my home wherever possible. No word yet on whether the disc will include lossless PCM Audio, which HD-DVD never supported. If you have Blu-Ray in your home theater or PC setup, this is a must-have!!

Night and Fog - Criterion Collection58 reviews
Michel Bouquet, Reinhard Heydrich

Criterion, 2003

A caveat . . .
I've noted that a number of reviewers mention seeing Night and Fog in a high school class. I think one would have to be very careful about using this film in high school. This is not simply because it is very graphic. If it is the ONLY film about the Holocaust that students see, particularly in the context of a survey course in European history, where there's very little time for an in-depth look ...

Warner Home Video, 2005

Almost as good as Volume 1
The first set of the Film Noir Classic Collection was chock full of great movies, so I was naturally looking forward to the second set. Volume 2, happily, is also a good collection, not quite at the par of the first set but still with five decent-to-great movies. And if they play a little faster and looser with the definition of film noir in this set, that doesn't deprive the collection of its ...

A good buy if you don't already own them
Seems like everyone is putting out western collections this year, and Universal is no exception. The westerns included in this set are: Destry Rides Again (1939) - NO EXTRAS Winchester '73 (1950) - features Interview with James Stewart that is actually a commentary that runs throughout the film. Bend Of The River (1952) - NO EXTRAS The Far Country (1955) - NO EXTRAS Night Passage (1957) - ...

I love this movie. I check it out of the public library every chance I get. I need it. It refreshes me. First of all, think of all the heavyweight talents involved in this movie. ... Strongest of Noir Collections To Date
My guilty pleasure is film noir, so even though I had never heard of a single one of the films featured in Film Noir Collection Vol. IV, I bought it anyway just as I have bought and mostly enjoyed the previous three. After viewing this entire set the week it arrived, I came to the conclusion that overall, this is the strongest of the four film noir classic collections issued to date. I won't ...

Roy Orbison
Why has thou voice fallen silent? You have been missed for your seat is empty. His voice was strong to move like a lion in winter, still able to move the heart. Surrounded by loving friends, and fans the big "O" delivers a remarkable performance that the hands of time will not diminish. I will never forget when I first heard Roy breath life into his song Evergreen....I could hear the sound of ...
