Ouch...that hurt...Do it again...

This book really tickled my fancy, then reached over and smacked it a few times, tied it up and pissed on it, made it endure some CFT(Captured Fancy Torture), before depositing it on an abandoned street and driving away...without even some change for bus fare. So, yeah, i recommend this book, as long as you got a sense of humor and don't mind taking a little peek into the new American mainstream, and its many earthly delights.

in defense of dog-humping

A short, sharp stab at the heart of american culture, and a great read, too. Little else needs to be said.

(though it should be noted that while it is not necessary to be familiar with Ellis' previous work or online presence to enjoy Crooked Little Vein, anyone who is will get a little extra mileage out of the plethora of inside jokes and references that are slipped into the narrative)

Welcome to America

Warren Ellis's debut novel follows a private eye through the American underground of sexual fetishes, serial killers, and filthy rich oil tycoons. Halfway through the book, one character asks the question, "If it's available on the Internet with one click of the mouse, how can it still be considered 'underground'?" If this is what mainstream America looks like, it's time to jump ship!

My local bookshop shelved this one under "science fiction." It's science fiction in the same way that Philip K. Dick is, which is to say, not at all. It will most likely register with fans of Chuck Palahniuk and other counter-culture writers. The private investigator and his "assistant" appear to have stepped straight out of Warren Ellis's Fell series. Ellis's writing is as colorful as prose gets, and it's nice to see him given the space here to flesh out his characters. "Crooked Little Vein" is a quick read, however, so fans are going to be hungry for more after devouring this gem.

Wonderful Debut effort!

Sometimes I get so tired of the traditional drivel we are fed as readers, but every once in awhile a new voice comes along that knocks my socks off and reminds me of why I read! Warren Ellis is a take no prisoners, tell it like its author-and this is his debut effort! Read the firsts chapter, heck, read the first line. "I opened my eyes to see the rat taking a piss in my coffee mug." And then try and stop! I bet you can't do it.

Ellis creates a wonderfully twisted mad world steeped in crime and sex. The humor is sharp and kept me laughing, nothing is sacred. This is the story of Michael McGill, a burned out PI who finds himself practically forced to try and find the original Constitution of the United States. No not the one we all know, this is the real one with certain hidden amendments the Founding fathers put in as safety net if the great experiment did not work. That's the basic plot premise but there is so much more going on here, but trying to explain it would be silly, and if I did accomplish this it would ruin the story. The strength and joy of this book however is in the strange and twisted characters that populate its pages. Highly recommended!
