Love in the time of Cholera

Very well written. You can choose not to finish some books. This one you will want to know how it ends.

Love in the Time of Cholera is a rich feast of words and sentiments for the reader

Love is a many splendored thing! It is also complex. In this novel the 1988 Nobel Prize for Literature laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez has written an excellent, abosorbing work of fiction. The tale begins in the early part of the twentieth century when Florentno falls in love with the wealthy and haughty Fermina. She refuses to wed him when her family considers him to be of a lower social class. Fermina weds Dr. Juvenal Urbino who comes from an old and established family in the Caribbean city where the novel transpires. She does not love him but weds in an effort to please her family and enjoy material comfort. The couple live in Paris for a while, raise children and enjoy high society. Urbino is a kind but eccentric man. When he dies Fermina is reaquainted with Florentio and the flame of youth is relit in old age.
This is the plot but the greatness of the novel lies in the rich, metaphorical language of Marquez which comes across even in English translation. Marquez is in the major leagues of novelist and deserved the Nobel Prize. The best character is the arch-romantic Florentio who becomes a successful businessman, has 622 affairs and refuses to marry since he is pining for Fermina.
The narrative of the novel is easier to follow than that of "One Hundred Years of Solitutude" by Marquez providing a good entrance into the wonderful world of this spinner of tales. Excellent!
